The California Central Coast Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council hosted the first annual
Green Awards Competition to recognize the outstanding green building professionals and LEED
projects on the Central Coast as part of their chapter celebration of 2010 achievements.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green
building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, providing third-party
verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving
performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO 2 emissions
reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to
their impacts.

California Central Coast projects and project teams were recognized in the following Green Award
categories:

12/5/11 2010 USGBC-C4 Green Awards 1

Congregation Beth David is the first synagogue in the world to be certified as a LEED building. Its
innovative design using strawbale construction, natural lighting and ventilation, water walls, and
natural landscaping with berms to deflect the wind. The project includes onsite energy generation
producing 5745 kWh annually, diverted 75% of its construction waste, used 24% local materials and
reduced its energy use and water use by 35% and 50% respectively.
