Message from the Chairman......
November 2006 Newsletter
Hello Everyone.
It's been a very busy eleven months. I reported in the August Newsletter that the runway 16/34
reconstruction project was delayed. Well folks, the project has not only started we are slightly
ahead of schedule. If the weather cooperates we will have a new runway safety area, a new run-
up area to rny 34, a new taxiway Echo, and new rny lighting and painting. The bulk of the project
could be completed in the next couple of months. And the remainder would be completed in the
spring. Lawrence Lynch Construction is doing a great job. Our engineering consultants, Edwards
& Kelsey will have the final design of the rny 9/27 project completed in January 07. If everything
moves forward without any problems, reconstruction of rny 9/27 would begin sometime next
summer.
Rich Little held his fundraiser in August to support his organization “FLIGHT FOR CF” which is
a group to help fight Cystic Fibrosis. There were plane and helicopter rides, food and much more.
Rich and I discussed having more fundraisers next year. Good job and good luck Rich.
On Friday, September 22nd the Collings Foundation brought their B17, B24, B25, T6 and
Stearman to Beverly. They were here Friday through Monday. Included were static displays,
plane and helicopter rides and much more. What a show. Hundreds of people attended and it was
a complete success, we are looking forward to next year. I want to thank the following people for
their help in making this a success. ATC Manager, Jeff Lurie, and his staff, Clarke Labbe, Rich
Little, Jim Baker, Ken Robinson and Jay Wessel of NAA, Roger Brul of Helicopter Services of
Boston, Linda McCarthy of Something Different Cafe, Steve Castle of NX-AERO, US Coast
Guard Helicopter crew, our maintenance crew, Ken Lewis and Jerry Nelson, BVY Manager Bob
Mezzetti, and the flight crew, mechanics and staff from the Collings Foundation. I attended the
show each day and can report that they were professional, courteous and easy to work with
throughout the entire show. Thank you all.
We continue to wait for National Grid and an electrical contractor to install lights on the east
ramp areas and parking lot. We have a solid plan in place. However, much patience is needed for
this project.
(LET THERE BE LIGHT) Good News for our West side tenants, there will be street lights
installed on the airport road west and the hanger 4 road. Hopefully, during the month of
November.
We have a new commission member Steve Fryer from Danvers who was appointed in September
to replace Gardner Trask. Steve is a local businessman. I asked Steve to join our Public Relations
Committee along with Karen Nelson and Tony Dettorre and non airport commission member,
Steve Swartz, owner of PR Sizzle Company at Cummings Center. They will be working on a
BVY public relation brochure soon.
With the help of our Facilities and Maintenance Committee Chairman, Ralph Forgione, we were
able to have an east side airport clean up day on Wednesday, November 8th. It's amazing how
much junk we can accumulate over the years. We also did some landscaping and shrub pruning
which is all part of our effort to clean and beautify the east side of the airport.
Our website, www.beverlyairport.com has been completely rebuilt right on schedule thanks to
Chris Randall of Network Innovations. Check it out, if you have any suggestions let me know.
We will be adding a lot more information in the coming months. For instance, the Beverly
Vietnam War Memorial and the helicopter (which has a fresh coat of paint and new decals) will
have a dedicated page with the names of our fallen heroes from Beverly and information about
the memorial. My best friend, Alfred J. Small is one of the nine young men who died in Vietnam.
The fuel farm on the east side is now in operation. It is self fueling (100 LL only) and open to all
Beverly tie down and hanger tenants. For more information, call Ken Robinson or Jay Wessel at
North Atlantic Air (978-774-0207). They also have tie down and hanger space available.
Congratulations to Richard (Ace) Chase of Danvers. Ace is our newest tenant and took over
Hanger 4 as of October. Ace plans a major renovation of the hanger and ramp. He also plans to
start a new business on site, aircraft cleaning and detailing. Ace has tie down and hanger space
available. For more information, call Ace at CAT Aviation (978-774-4844. Welcome aboard,
Ace Chase. I want to thank Vice Chairman Bill Mahoney and his committee for their quick
response regarding the hanger 4 agreement.
We also owe a big thank you to Ace Chase of Hanger 4. He volunteered to make and install a
prototype baffle on the approach lights to runway 16. We have one installed on one of the light
bars and they work great. You may be asking why we did this, well when the lights go on, they
were glaring into the windows of 4 houses on Burley Street in Wenham. When this came to our
attention we went to work to find a solution to help our Wenham neighbors. Within the next few
months, we should have a permanent baffle system on most of the lights. One neighbor already
commented the lights work. I also want to thank Commissioner Tony Dettorre, Ken Robinson
and Bob Wade for their help on this project.
North Shore Community College has appointed John Bosco to teach their Aviation Science
program. They currently have 23 students. John and I have discussed having a career day and
possibly setting up a BAC scholarship to be awarded to a Beverly or Danvers high school senior
interested in enrolling in the NSCC Aviation Science program. The Aviation program is
affiliated with the Beverly Flight Center. For more info call NSCC 978-762-4000 x5592 or BFC
978-774-7755.
Jim Baker of AB Aviation is moving forward with his plans to build a new hanger on the east
side next to his Hanger 3. Jim also has hanger space available. For more info call Jim at 781-938-
7034.
Please don’t forget the Civil Air Patrol with support and donations when possible. They are
always available when we need them, volunteering time at fundraisers, aviation days, painting
and cleaning, etc .Thank you CAP Commander Jackie Jones, your staff and your 18 cadets.
We have accomplished a lot in the past 11 months. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to
work with so many talented and dedicated people. Going forward, we have a lot more to do, but I
remain very confident we will develop Beverly Airport into a place we can all be proud of.
On behalf of the Beverly Airport Commission I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving
and also a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. My next newsletter will be in January or
February 2007. Incredible, where has the time gone?
IMPORTANT REMINDER. All aircraft owners, please use auxiliary locks, be sure to remove
keys and lock all doors before you leave your aircraft unattended. All hanger owners please lock
your facilities. Thank you.
Future newsletters will include a brief bio on our airport businesses and their owners.
If you have any business updates, upcoming events, or any issues on your mind please contact me
and I will be happy to discuss it with you and include the information in future newsletters.
Please join us at our next Commission Meeting on Tuesday, November 14th at 7 p.m. and
Monday, December 11th at 7:00 p.m.
