COLLEGE REPS VISITING BHS
Various representatives from colleges will be visiting the high school to meet with students interested in
learning more about admissions, scholarships, and various other helpful information pertaining to that college.
If you are interested in meeting with a representative, please see Mrs. Stanek in the Counseling Center to sign
up. She will give you a green pass that will allow you to leave class to attend the meeting. (Reminder: If you
are wanting to attend a meeting to learn more about a 4-year college/university, you must be currently enrolled
or have previously taken Algebra II.)

ASVAB TEST
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test will be given on November 4 at BHS during
the first two morning blocks to all interested sophomores, juniors and seniors. This free test can help students
determine their career interests/abilities and also determine their direction for college. Any junior or senior
planning to pursue any military branch after high school is strongly encouraged to take the ASVAB. Sign up in
Mrs. Darby’s office no later than Thursday, October 28. We are limited to 20 seats, and juniors and seniors
will have priority, should we have more than 20 students sign up.
SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION
All males are required by the Federal Government to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th
birthday. Now, 17 year-old males can submit their registration information early on the Internet (www.sss.gov),
or by filling out a form available from any post office. Selective Service registration is required to be eligible
for a federal student loan, job training, most federal jobs, and U.S. citizenship.
U.S. SERVICE ACADEMIES
Any junior planning to apply to any of the military academies will need to begin the application process as soon
as possible. Application forms and information about the academies are available online at
www.house.gov/blunt/.
ACT
Juniors planning to attend two-year or four-year colleges after high school are encouraged to take the ACT
during their junior year (if you are taking or have taken Geometry and/or Algebra II.) The ACT is given five
times each school year on national testing dates and is administered at Bolivar High School and SBU. The ACT
is built around the Core Curriculum (4 English, 3 Math=Alg I, Geom., Alg II, 2 Science, 3 Social Studies), and
nearly ALL four-year colleges require an ACT score for admission requirements and/or scholarship eligibility.
The cost of the ACT this year is $33.00 (if you are on free/reduced lunch, you can receive a fee waiver to take
the test at no cost. See Mrs. Darby if you qualify for this.) Students must register online at www.actstudent.org
no later than the registration deadline to avoid paying late fees. Juniors who have taken or are currently taking
Geometry and/or Algebra II are advised to take the ACT in the spring of 2011, unless you are enrolled in an
SBU dual credit course this year, and need to have an ACT on file for your dual credit application sooner.
ACT registration information and practice test books are available on the table right when you walk into the
Counseling Center. Students need to put the school code (260260) during registration so that the high school
will have a copy of your ACT score to send to colleges/agencies at your request later.
