Reflections
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Liturgy of the Word is one of the two major parts of the Mass. In the Liturgy of the
Word we meet Jesus in the Sacred Scripture, so that we are prepared to meet him in the Liturgy
of the Eucharist. If we have not been present at the Liturgy of the Word, we really are not ready
to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Fr. Paul Schmidt
The Lectionary (the book of Biblical readings used at Mass) is one of the greatest results
of the reform of the Liturgy envisioned by the bishops of the Second Vatican Council. Previously
one set of readings was used at all the Sunday Masses every year. Readings at daily Mass, except
during Lent, were very limited. The Council ordered that the Lectionary be expanded. “The
treasures of the Bible are to be opened up more lavishly, so that richer fare may be provided for
the faithful at the table of God’s Word. In this way a more representative portion of the holy
Scriptures will be read to the people over a set cycle of years.”
The Lectionary now provides two complete cycles of readings for daily Mass and three
for Sunday Mass. Sunday and Feast day Masses now include three readings, one usually from the
The Liturgy Old Testament (except in Easter Season) and one from the New Testament, in addition to the
Gospel. The increased exposure to Scripture at Mass has encouraged Bible study programs.
Many Catholics are now reading the Bible regularly at home or in groups.
of the
The new translation of the Roman Missal does not affect the Lectionary. The only
change you may notice is the response: “And with your spirit” when the priest or deacon
Word introduces the Gospel reading. We sit for the first two Scripture readings and the Responsory
Psalm. We stand for the Gospel, out of respect for Jesus, who is present in a special way in the
Gospel. Gospel passages are contained in a special book, which is carried in procession, incensed,
and kissed, as marks of respect. During most of the year, we sing “Alleluia” (Praise the Lord) as
the Gospel book is brought to the pulpit. The Alleluia verse points us to the Gospel reading we
are about to hear.
The Responsory Psalm is also a proclamation of Scripture. The Cantor sings it from the
pulpit. It is also a meditative response to the Word of God which has just been read. The repeated
antiphon (refrain) helps us to let the reading sink in.
The homily should help us absorb the Holy Scripture we have heard and apply it to our
lives. If the preacher is not successful in reaching us, we should make up our own.
The Creed summarizes our faith. It comes to us from the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD,
with some later additions. You will find a number of changes in the wording. The “we believe”
has been changed to “I believe,” which literally translates the Latin “credo.” Our faith is personal
as well as communal; when we say the Creed, we are saying something about ourselves. The
word “consubstantial” used to describe the unity of the Son with the Father, and the word
“incarnate” is used to tell that “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”
The General Intercessions conclude the Liturgy of the Word. These prayer petitions
include more than our personal or local needs. They have a universal dimension. That is why they
often mention the Pope, the Bishop, the Church at large, world problems. Our prayers go out for
the whole world and the whole community of faith. We bring the needs of all to Mass.
Our activity during the Liturgy of the Word is active, reflective listening, so that Jesus
can come alive in our hearts.
Your Pastor,
Father Paul Schmidt
