COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prerequisite: None An introduction to the fundamentals of a current version of Microsoft Windows. Topics include running application software, accessing operating system features, and handling a multitasking environment. May be repeated three times. Co-offered as OS 105. Credit may not be received if prior credit earned in OS 105 unless topics have changed. One-half hour of lecture/discussion and one hour lab a week. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Microsoft Windows XP, Professional, Hollingsworth & Koers, Paradigm Publishing Inc., 2003. OBJECTIVES: This course provides an opportunity for learning how to work with a computer system’s hardware, programs, and data using the latest operating systems for PC’s: Microsoft Windows XP. It provides an enhanced graphical environment that opens up new windows of opportunity for your computer-based work. You will learn how to use the accessories and multitask. You will learn to customize your on-screen environment, install and remove hardware and programs, manage files and folders, create folders, backup to the hard drive, run more than one task at a time, and share data between applications. You will learn how to manage system settings and use Internet Explorer. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: A. Work in the Windows XP environment. Use and change properties on the Taskbar, and customize the start menu. Use the Windows XP Accessories (i.e. WordPad, Paint, and Calculator). We will also be using Microsoft Word. Evaluation will be monitored through instructor observation, objective quizzes and tests within a minimum of 70 percent accuracy. G. Use the clipboard to cut, copy, and paste. Evaluation will be monitored through instructor observation, objective quizzes and tests within a minimum of 70 percent accuracy. H. Use the Windows Explorer and My Computer to do file management. Copy, move, rename, and delete files from diskette and the hard drive. EVALUATION: Homework/Exercises/Projects 50% Quizzes 30% Final Exam 20% QUIZ/TEST MAKEUP POLICY: In the event that a student misses a test or quiz because of illness or some other unavoidable reason, and if Mrs. Peterson agrees, the test or quiz be taken another mutually agreed upon time. WITHDRAWAL POLICY: The instructor will not assign a “W” for a student’s final grade. The student is responsible for officially withdrawing from the class according to the procedures described in the college catalog. Any student who does not officially withdraw from the class will receive a letter grade. Withdraw date: Octboer 10, 2006 INCOMPLETE GRADE POLICY: All course requirements must be completed by the end date for the course. If there are extenuating circumstances that merit granting a student more time to finish course requirements, an incomplete grade (“I”) may be given. To receive an incomplete, an Incomplete Grade Contract Form must be completed and approved. If the requirements are not completed, the “I” may revert to an “F”. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE: Class cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on local radio stations or posted on the college website: www.kishwaukeecollege.edu. Room changes will be announced in advance whenever possible and posted on the classroom door. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR TRANSFER DEGREE STUDENTS: As part of the assessment program, students intending to graduate with an A.A., A.E.S., A.F.A., or A.S. degree are required to submit a degree portfolio. The degree portfolio is used to determine if students reach a mastery of our general education goals. For Summer 2006 graduation, the due date for the degree portfolio is Thursday, July 13, 2006. For Fall 2006 graduation, the due date for the degree portfolio is Thursday, November 16, 2006. For specific information about the degree portfolio, a PowerPoint presentation is available at Media Services in A-252 or at www.kishwaukeecollege.edu. Go to “Campus Life,” click on “Student Success,” and click on “Degree Requirements.” Students may view sample portfolios at the Learning Skills Center in A-300. LEARNING SKILLS CENTER: Students must present their Kishwaukee College student ID card when using any Learning Skills Center services. The L.S.C. will provide students with calculators for exams if the instructor allows it. No cell phones, pagers, food, or drinks are allowed in the L.S.C.
