How to speak Russian? This is a difficult question. Russian becomes increasingly

more important. Many schools and universities already offer Russian courses as

elective classes. But why is Russian ever more important? Most likely, the reason is

the fast growing economy. Russian companies spread all over the world and want to

establish business contacts across countries. Moreover, international businesses often

enter the Russian market and try to gain a foothold. That is the reason why it is

gradually more imperative to speak Russian – your Russian colleagues will definitely

appreciate it!

Russian is a difficult language – what is the best way to learn Russian?

 Speak Russian!

The most important thing is to speak it at every possibility. Without speaking the

foreign language which you learn, it is impossible to become good in speaking it.

Practice is the key! Of course, often you do not know any Russian person you could

meet with to practice your oral Russian. However, there are more possibilities than

simply speaking with native speakers in your social environment.

For example, many online communities exist where you can sign up for a profile in

order to chat with different native speakers from all over the world. Such communities

often even do not demand a registration fee. Often, there is even the possibility to chat

with other people via Videocall, for example.

At other sites you can furthermore improve your written Russian skills. Often, people

exchange documents: Native speakers offer to read through your written foreign text.

In return, they want you to correct their foreign text. These online communities are a

perfect opportunity to practice your Russian.

 Subscribe for a course - or get yourself a Russian language

program!

So there is still this question: How to speak Russian? We all know one thing: Learning

Russian is indeed very difficult. But how can you acquire Russian skills?

There are basically two opportunities. Either you find a course nearby and go to

school every week or at least somehow regularly. The other possibility is to buy a

computerized language program for studying by yourself at home – or wherever you

want to study. Language programs have the big advantage that the learner can chose

what to study, where to study, when to study, in what frequency and how much to

study. Most programs are completely individually adaptable. Examples are the various

language courses according to the Birkenbihl Approach.

What is the Birkenbihl Approach to learn languages?

The Birkenbihl Approach was developed by Vera F. Birkenbihl. The technique is

based on the subconscious. It assumes that people can learn languages by being

exposed to it on a regular basis. Different computerized courses for adults and also for

children are offered on the website. But it is not necessary to buy one of these

products, as the technique can be applied as a stand-alone method as well. The foreign

language learning technique is essentially divided into four phases:

1. De-coding the foreign text. De-coding means word-by-word translation.

In this first stage the learner translates the Russian text word-for-word into the

mother tongue. Obviously, the sentences will not make sense any more after

translation. However, this is meant to be. A word-for-word translation ensures

that the learner studies vocabularies in a way that he/she can reproduce and

apply it in different situations. The biggest problem with the old cramming of

vocabularies as a language learning technique is that the learner is not capable

of recognizing let alone deploying the words or phrases in another context.

This challenge can be overcome with the Birkenbihl Approach. Regarding

products using the Birkenbihl Approach, the text is already de-coded.

2. Listen to the foreign text actively. The second phase is called Active

Listening. While the learner listens to a native speaker who reads out the text,

he/she reads the de-coded text into the mother tongue simultaneously. Thereby,

vocabularies are learned by default. If you do not want to buy a Birkenbihl

product, you can ask a native speaker you know to record the text for you. It is

highly important that a native speaker reads the text, as the learner should be

exposed to the correct pronunciation! If you do not know any Russian person, it

is also possible to use a recorded article you found on the Internet, CD, or a

part of a radio program.

3. Listen to the Russian text passively. Listen passively means listening to

the text while doing other things. You could listen to the text for example while

you prepare a meal, while you take a shower, while you are on your way to

work… There are endless possibilities to learn Russian by listening. The

learner does not need to plan any learning time, as this part of the Birkenbihl

technique is done while engaging in other tasks. The text need to be loud

enough to hear it, but quite enough not to be disturbed in doing the main task.

This stage prepares the learner to speak Russian afterwards.

4. Engage in activities to practice your Russian skills. In order to

strengthen and enhance the Russian skills, it is crucial to practice Russian. This

could be de-coding another text, listening to Russian radio, reading Russian

texts, watching Russian movies, go on vacation to Russia… Possibilities are

again limitless.

This approach is certainly a good language learning technique. If you want to speak

Russian, and aim to save valuable time, it is a good choice to look at the Russian

language courses using the Birkenbihl approach. How to speak Russian? It is still a

question, but one possible solution is presented in this article.
