Frequently Asked Questions about SSS Tutoring
Is tutoring available for all classes? Tutoring is provided for developmental
courses, math, reading, writing and science depending on the availability of
qualified tutors. Each semester our pool of tutors changes, so there may be
only a handful of tutors for some courses. It is best to come early in the
semester
What types of tutoring are available? The SSS program sponsors two different types of
tutoring: Assigned/Walk-In.
Assigned tutoring: If you know that you will need at least one hour of tutoring per week
for the rest of the semester, you should request Assigned tutoring. We will attempt to
assign you to one person with whom you will meet for the rest of the semester on a weekly
basis. Usually your grades and/or your reading, writing and math placement test scores
will determine your assignment. Our Tutorial Coordinator will contact you based on a
referral from our program Counselor.
Walk-In tutoring is designed for students interested in peer-assisted review and practice
sessions in a small group setting with selected undergraduate chemistry, physics, and
computer science courses. Walk In sessions are voluntary and open to SSS students who
want to improve their understanding of course material. Contact our Tutorial Coordinator
for schedule availability @ 750-2367.
How much tutoring may I receive? Most students can receive up to two hours of lab
time per week. Please call 750-2367 to get the pertinent information for your academic
situation.
What should I bring to my first tutoring session? You are expected to come with any
books, pencils, notes, calculators you need for completing your course work.
SSS tutors are not here to teach you new material, but to help you work through
confusing material; therefore, you should have attempted your homework and attended
class before you come to your session.
What happens if I need to cancel a tutoring session? You are expected to notify your
tutor (for Assigned tutoring) or the SSS office at least 24 hours before a tutoring session if
you cannot make the session.
What are the qualifications of your tutors? Most SSS tutors are peer undergraduate
students who made A's in courses they tutor. Professional tutors typically have a four-
year degree in the subject that is being taught/tutored.
I have a learning disability. Do you offer any services for me? Yes, you are allowed the
same tutoring privileges as all students on campus. Students with documented
disabilities are encouraged to register with Disabled Student Services and notify SSS of
any accommodations recommended by DSS. Contact Mrs. Waddell, Director of Disabled
Student Services for more information @ 750-2390.
** SSS collaborates with the Learning Center and other departments on campus. So, if
we do not have a tutor for a particular subject, we will secure one for you.

Ronald McNair Scholars Program
Who was Ronald McNair?
Ronald Erwin McNair was born into poverty on
October 21, 1950 and grew up in Lake City, South
Carolina. Despite the hardships and obstacles he and
his family endured he was determined to acquire a
solid education. McNair received his Bachelor degree
in Physics from North Carolina A&T State University
and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He later went on
to earn a Ph.D. in Quantum Electronics and Laser Technology from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1978 his career goals took him to NASA where he
became the second African-American in space. McNair earned much respect from
many and was an excellent role model. Besides just academic achievements he
acquired other notable commendations throughout his lifetime and career earning
numerous honors and awards. He also held a fifth degree black belt in karate and
was an accomplished jazz saxophonist. He was married and had two children, one
son and one daughter. Tragedy struck on January 28, 1986 shortly after the
Challenger space shuttle he was abroad burst in flames only minutes after take off.
Everyone aboard lost their life that day.
What is the Ronald McNair Scholars Program?
In the late 1980’s Congress put into place funding for a special academic program in
order to record McNair’s academic excellence and achievements. The purpose of this
program is to encourage students to reach for the highest possible level of
achievement and help reduce the disparity of students from disadvantaged
backgrounds who desire to pursue doctoral degrees. The program is designed for
undergraduate level students and its principal focus is the pursuit of independent
research under the close supervision of a faculty mentor. Students who enroll in the
McNair Program also benefit from support groups, counseling, and a variety of
cultural, educational, and social activities.
