                  Results and Findings

Dec. 15, 2008 Presented by International Relations and 1

Context

Cross-Cultural Dating and Marriage is not a new
phenomenon with the phrase 'Mail Order Bride'
       dating to the 1800's
There has never been a serious study conducted of
these cross-cultural marriages and their rates of
       failure or causes for divorce
There have been several recent tragic and high-
profile newsworthy cases of abuse and murder in
       connection with Cross-Cultural Marriage

Context (cont'd)

Recent legislation has seemingly vilified the men
       involved in Cross-Cultural Marriage
International Relations, as an independent 'voice' in
the field of Cross-Cultural Marriage initiated the
first wide-scale scientific survey into the real data
and facts, resulting in this survey.

Scope of the Survey

The Survey sought to gather data from the
       following persons:
− Anyone who is currently married to a
                    cross-cultural spouse
− Anyone who has ever divorced from a
                    cross-cultural spouse
The survey did not consider respondents
who indicated their relationship had not
resulted in marriage (i.e. living together)

counsel from Statistics Solutions that sufficient data had
        been gathered
The data was turned over to Statistics Solutions for their
        review
Some data was excluded from the final dataset over
        concern it may be invalid
Final dataset consisted of 1,710 validated responses

Key Questions
International Relations posed several key questions for
detailed examination by Statistics Solutions, as follows:
                1. What is the divorce rate amongst those in cross-cultural
marriage and how does that rate compare to the US domestic
                     (traditional) divorce rate?
                2. Of those divorced, how long did they remain in the marriage?
                3. Do “One-Week-Wonder” (OWW) marriages (courtship of 2
weeks or less) fail at a higher rate than those marriages that
result from a longer courtship (courtship greater than 2 weeks)?
                4. For those only using International Marriage Brokers (IMB), do
“One-Week-Wonder” (OWW) marriages (courtship of 2 weeks
or less) fail at a higher rate than those marriages that result
from a longer courtship (courtship greater than 2 weeks)?
                5. Is abuse (physical, verbal, or emotional) a significant contributor
to divorce in cross-cultural marriage? Is there a gender
difference on the contribution of abuse to divorce?
