London 2012 is coming – What is your school doing?

In 617 days from now, the opening ceremony of the world’s biggest sporting event will take place in

the UK. Schools are in a great position to harness the once in a lifetime opportunities that this will

create to inspire a new generation of young people to participate in sport in schools and their

communities. The following are some of the initiatives that are available to schools and young

people to maximise the impact of the London 2012 Games.

Young Ambassadors – This is an exciting new opportunity for committed

Sports Leaders to become inspirational role models using London 2012 as

the catalyst to increase participation in their schools and communities.

Gold Young Ambassadors for 2010/11 have been selected in all 22 LA’s

across Wales while recruitment for secondary school Young Ambassadors

known as ‘adiStars’ is currently ongoing. To find out more, including your

Local Authority Young Ambassador lead officer please visit

www.youngambassadorswales.org.uk

adiStars is the new online participation game, sponsored by adidas that encourages young people to

sign up with their friends and take part in a variety of

sporting challenges. Completion of these skill,

strength, stamina, suppleness and speed challenges

can win those that take part and their schools once in

a lifetime prizes from many of adidas’s sponsored athletes. Contact your Local Authority YA lead

officer or speak with your 5x60 officer to find out about how adistars Young Ambassador

recruitment is going in your school. To find out more on adiStars Young Ambassadors visit

To get the most out of London 2012 sign your school up to the Get

Set network, the London 2012 education resource website. Here

you will find resources and ideas for cross-curricular Olympic and

Paralympic themed activities and competitions that schools and

young people can take advantage of. By signing up to Get Set your

school will be able to benefit from the inspiration of London 2012 and be in with a chance of winning

spot prizes that will raise the profile of the school. To find out more visit

www.london2012.com/getset

The Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week will be happening across the UK again next year from

June 27th to July 2nd 2011 and schools have the opportunity to sign up, organise and take part in

London 2012 inspired activities. This year’s theme will be ‘Personal Best’ and

young people will be encouraged to try for a personal best in a sport or Olympic

and Parlaympic themed event. Schools that sign up will receive resources and

ideas on what to do during NSSW and there incentives to be won for schools that

sign up to take part. This is another fantastic opportunity for your school and

students to be inspired by London 2012. For further information and details on

how to sign up please visit www.schoolsportweek.com
