Nicaragua 2007 Dental Team Itinerary



Friday, June 8

 First week (“A” Team) meets in parking lot of First Baptist Church in Redlands at

6:00 p.m. for transport to LAX

 “A” Team will consist of 6 dentists, 15 dental students (8 D4s and 7 D2s), 3 DH

students, 3 UNLV students (total US students – 21), 3 assistants (2 Spanish

speakers, 1 videographer) – 30 total. Note: videographer will be assigned Dra.

Karen Valenzuela as a Spanish speaking assistant.

 We could use more assistants during this week, otherwise some D2s will need to

assist and possibly disinfect instruments.

 SIMS team (10-15), use 15 so there will be 45 total in entire group. However,

SIMS team is planning to travel on Sunday so 30 of “A” team will be traveling to

LAX on this day.

 Claude to arrange transportation to and from airport for “A” team

Saturday, June 9

 “A” Team leaves LAX on TACA at 2:20 am (arrives MGA at 9:30 am) or COPA

at 2:10 am (arrives MGA at 11:54 am). It may be difficult for everyone to get

tickets on the same flight so we should schedule as early as possible. TACA is the

preferred airline if we can resolve the luggage weight and size issue. Mario to

arrange transportation within Nicaragua

 Transportation by bus to Ave Maria with lunch on the way at the Metrocenter

Food Court (30 people)

 Dinner at Ave Maria (30 people)

 Recover from all-night flight

 Spending night at Ave Maria (30 people)

 SIMS team of 15 people travels to LAX on this night. Who will arrange this

transportation?

Sunday, June 10

 SIMS Team leaves LAX on TACA at 2:20 am (arrives MGA at 9:30 am) or

COPA at 2:10 am (arrives MGA at 11:54 am). Need to arrange transportation

from Managua airport to Ave Maria – Sergio?

 Transportation by bus to Ave Maria with lunch on the way at the Metrocenter

Food Court (15 people)

 Eating breakfast and dinner at Ave Maria (30 people)

 Set up clinic at the Ave Maria and Colegio Bautista (6 people)

 Lunch at Ave Maria (6 people, possibly more if all rest don’t go on tour) or go

into town

 Note: Will need guard at the Colegio starting Sunday evening when we are done.

 Tourism to marketplace and other locations for those who want to. Go to less-

touristy marketplace than the Masaya market if possible.

 Having lunch on tour (24 people?)

 SIMS group to recover from all-night flight

 Stay night at Ave Maria (45 people) (Karen, Mildred, Gaby?)

Monday, June 11

 6:30 am breakfast for Group 4 (possibly SIMS?), leave for Managua by 7:00 am

 7:00 a.m. breakfast for groups 1, 2, 3, and SIMS at Ave Maria (45 people, all

groups)

 8:00 a.m. Team “A”, groups 1, 2, and 3 go to Colegio Bautista for opening

ceremony (45 people) at 9:00 am

 SIMS team – go to Colegio then to nearby Rainbow Network community or skip

Colegio and go directly to health fair site.

 Group 1 to stay at Colegio (24 people), Group 2 to Ave Maria, Group 3 to Mt.

Sinai Baptist Church in La Concha for one day extraction clinic

 Group 4 to Acahualinca in Managua. Transportation by Sergio?.

 Group 1 = 9 units, 13 chairs, 4 dentists (3 US, 1 Nica), 14 student providers (11

US, 3 Nica), 2 hygiene students, and 2 support staff – 22 total

o 8:00 a.m. to Colegio Bautista for welcoming ceremony and dental clinic

o Will be joined by 1 UAM faculty and 3 students who return to Managua

each night

o 5:00 pm return to Ave Maria

 Group 2 (One dentist, 3 LLU students, one LLU hygienist, and 1 support staff)

goes back to the Ave Maria from the Colegio after opening ceremony to operate

clinic for the staff of Ave Maria. (Group 2 = 3 units, 4 chairs, one oral surgery

unit, restorative setup)

o 10:00 a.m. dental clinic begins

o Lunch at Ave Maria

o 5:00 p.m. clinic ends

 Group 3 (one dentist, two LLU students and one Nica dentist from UNAN).

(Group 3 = 0 units, 3 chairs, 1 oral surgery unit, assistant?) On Monday only,

Group 3 to Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in La Concha for one day extraction clinic

starting at 10:00 am and finishing at 4:00 pm

 Group 4 (one dentist, 2 (3 ?) LLU students, one assistant, and 2 Nica dentists from

UNAN), (Group 4 = 0 units, 5 chairs (one for screening), one oral surgery unit)

Group 4 goes to Acahualinca in Managua and is joined by Nica dentists who will

be picked up in Managua on Monday at place to be arranged. This group will be

doing extractions at Acahualinca. This is a ministry to the people living by the

dump and students at the local grade school.

o 7:00 am pickup at Ave Maria, Monday – Thursday.

o Tuesday – Thursday when Group 3 also going to Managua, Group 4 to be

dropped off first

o One Nica dentist will screen patients across street from school at Casa

Cepino and the other will be in the clinic

o Lunch from community, brought to school

o 4:00 pm clinic ends

 SIMS Health Fair Team – details to be provided

o SIMS tram will stay at Ave Maria and be transported to health fair site

each day and return to Ave Maria

o When final numbers available, will add to meals, accommodations, and

transportation totals, as appropriate.

 6:30 p.m. dinner at Ave Maria (48 people – 45 US plus 3 Nica dentists)

 Staying the night at Ave Maria (48 people)

Tuesday, June 12

 Group 1 all details same

 Group 2 stays at Ave Maria and eats lunch there (6 people)

 Group 3 goes to Anexo Villa Liberdad in Managua on Tuesday. All will stay at

the Ave Maria each night. This group will be doing an extraction clinic at Anexo

Villa Liberdad, the health clinic in the barrio run by the Nursing school at UPOLI.

o 7:00 am pickup at Ave Maria, Tuesday – Thursday.

o 9:00 am clinic begins

o Lunch provided by UPOLI

o 4:00 pm clinic ends

 Group 4 all details same

 Groups 3 and 4 go to dental clinics in Managua together. Will need transportation

back and forth each day and Group 4 gets dropped off first (10 total, 7 US and 3

Nica)

 SIMS team transported to health fair site (15 people) and returns to Ave Maria

 Spending night at Ave Maria (48 people)

 Eating breakfast and dinner at Ave Maria (48 people)

 Eating lunch at Colegio (22 people + UAM people)

 6:30 pm dinner at Ave Maria (48 people – 45 US and 3 Nica from UNAN)

 Staying the night at Ave Maria (48 people)

Wednesday, June 13

 Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 - all details same

 SIMS team transported to health fair site (15 people) and returns to Ave Maria

 Eating breakfast and dinner at Ave Maria (48 people)

 Spending the night at Ave Maria (48 people)

 Transportation and meals all the same as Tuesday

Thursday, June 14

 Group 1 ends clinic for this week at School

o 4:00 p.m. clinic ends, store equipment at School for next week clinic

o No final ceremony at School

o 5:00 p.m. return to Ave Maria

 Group 2 ends clinic for this week at Ave Maria

o 4:00 p.m. clinic ends

 Group 3 and 4 end clinics and return to Ave Maria

o Group 3 ends at 3:30 pm and is picked up first

o Group 4 ends at 4:00 pm

 SIMS team transported to health fair site (15 people) and returns

 Eating breakfast at Ave Maria (48 people)

 6:30 p.m. dinner for all at Pizza place in San Marcos

 Spending night at Ave Maria (48 people)

 Transportation and meals same as Tuesday, except dinner will be in town

 “B” Team meets in parking lot of First Baptist Church in Redlands at 6:00 p.m.

for transport to LAX. Transportation to be arranged by Hank Mercado.

 “B” Team will consist of 8 dentists, one hygienist, one physician, one nurse

anesthetist, and 13 assistants (21 people)



Friday, June 15

 7:00 a.m. breakfast for all at Ave Maria (48 people)

 Total number of people going to Montelimar is 45. Will need ? rooms, possibly

less if we can put 3 in a room.

 UNAN Nica dentists taken back to Managua by separate transportation, may give

them bus money.

 “A” Team transported to Montelimar by Ave Maria in the am (Large group, need

bus) (45 people)

 “B” Team leaves LAX on TACA at 2:20 a.m. and arrives in Managua at 9:30 am,

Nathan Project group will first go to Hospital Velez Paiz to confer with doctors

there and view facilities.

 “A” and “B” teams and SIMS group hang out at Montelimar (estimated 70

people)



Saturday, June 16

 “A” and “B” teams and SIMS hang out at Montelimar



Sunday, June 17

 “A” Team who are leaving and SIMS group transported to Managua for flight at

3:40 p.m., arrive at LAX at 11:15 p.m. (6 dentists, SIMS group, and Group 5

(Dean Brewer)). Total number of people needing transportation from

Montelimar to airport is (__people). Need transportation from LAX to Redlands.

 “B” Team plus A Team holdovers (now the “C” Team) transported to Ave Maria

( Pick up the “A” team at 12:00 noon and have them to the Managua airport by

2:00 p.m. Then return to Montelimar by 4:00 p.m. and transport the “C” team to

Ave Maria by 6:00 p.m.) (~50 people)

 Group 5 going will go with “A” Team to Managua. From there they will be

transported to the village somewhere north of Esteli. Transportation from the

airport to the location will be provided by Healing the Children. Group 5 will be

made up of one dentist, two UNAN students picked up in Esteli and two LLU

dental students (D4 and D2) to do tooth extractions for the Healing the Children

Foundation.

 Group 6 will go with “C” Team to Ave Maria. This group will be made up of

three dentists, one physician and one nurse anesthetist ?, one dental student, and

1-2 assistants (Natalie and other). This group (Nathan Project) will work with the

special needs children in Managua.

 Spending night at Ave Maria (50 people)

 Eating dinner at Ave Maria (50 people)

Monday, June 18

 Group 1 repeats schedule from 1st week at Colegio Bautista (Group 1 = 22?

people) We hope to be joined by more UAM Nicaraguan faculty and students,

possibly 5 each day. May also be joined by UNAN dentists who will run

extraction clinic.

 Group 2 runs clinic at Carmelite Convent in San Marcos (One dentist, 3 LLU

students, hygienist ?, one support staff = 6-7 people). Need transportation to and

from Convent each day and eats lunch at Convent or in community

 Eating breakfast and dinner at Ave Maria (50 people)

 Needing transportation between Ave Maria and Colegio and back (__ people)

 Are UNAN dentists rejoining us?

 Spending the night at Ave Maria (50 people)

 Eating lunch at Colegio Bautista (0 people)

 Group 5 is in the north.

 Group 6 is in Managua at hospital and eats lunch there

Tuesday, June 19

 Group 1 all details same

 Eating breakfast and dinner at Ave Maria (50 people)

 No one eating lunch at Colegio

 Needing transportation between Ave Maria and Colegio and back (15 people)

 Group 2 needs transportation and eats lunch in town or at Convent

 Group 6 needs to leave for Managua by 7:00 am, will eat lunch at Hospital

Wednesday, June 20

 No one eating lunch at Colegio

 Group 5 is in the north

Thursday, June 21

 Group 1 all details same

 Group 2 all details same, last clinic day at the convent

 Eating breakfast and dinner at Ave Maria (50 people)

 Spending night at Ave Maria (50 people)

 No one eating lunch at Colegio

 Needing transportation between Ave Maria and Colegio and back (__ people)

 Group 2 eating in town or at Convent, finish by 3:00 and get all equipment ready

to be transported back to Ave Maria.

 Group 5 is in the north and will travel back to Ave Maria in the evening. This is

the last clinic day and clinic will finish early. Bring all equipment back to Ave

Maria.

 Group 6 all details for clinic same. This is the last clinic day. Bring all

equipment back to Ave Maria. Leave expendibles with Dr. Vega or physician.

Friday, June 22

 Groups 1, 2, 5 & 6 all go to the Colegio (50 people). Take all equipment to be

stored at the Colegio

o 12:00 noon clinic ends

o 1:00 pack up equipment and supplies

o Inventory and store all equipment possible at the Colegio

o 3:00 ending ceremony at School

o 4:00 return to Ave Maria

 Eating breakfast at Ave Maria (30 people)

 Eating dinner at Pizza place (All kinds of people)

 Needing transportation between Ave Maria and Colegio and back (50 people)

 Eating lunch at Colegio (50 people)

 6:30 p.m. dinner for all at Pizza place in San Marcos

 Inventory and put returning equipment/supplies in tagged luggage and assign to

specific individuals (keep list)

 Spending night at Ave Maria (50 people)

Saturday, June 23

 Group 1, 2, 5, & 6 transported to Managua for flight to US on TACA at 5:35 pm

(arrives LAX at 11:30 pm) or COPA at 2:52 pm (arrives LAX at 12:48 am).

TACA is preferred due to shorter travel time and earlier arrival. Need

transportation from LAX to Redlands, to be arranged by Hank Mercado.

 Needing transportation to Managua (50 people)

 Eating breakfast and lunch at Ave Maria (50 people)
