The Abyss ( 1989 )
No major war of any kind as the backdrop. Instead, this film is about man destroying the environment,
the planet, himself. And luckily for us there is a kind race of aliens at the bottom of the ocean who will
very nicely wipe us out with mile-high tidal waves so that we can start over and work together to build
a kinder gentler world. Good thing for us that we have Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Ed Harris to
debate the issue with them on behalf of the entire planet. There are some truly jaw-dropping special
effects on display in this film.

Das Boot ( 1981 ) [German]
The story of the final mission of a WW2 German u-boat. Considered by many to be the best sub movie
ever made. Shows WWII from the point of view of German U-Boats and their crews. It is a terrifying
view of what went on in German U-Boats, and the harsh conditions that they were forced to work
under. It also shows how people on the boats were forced to deal with the boredom and the unkempt
areas of a submarine that is out to sea

The Hunley ( 1999 )
Hunley is about a Confederate made submarine during the American Civil War era. The problem with
this is that there were no submarines in that era. The CSS Hunley was one of the first submarines ever
made. The losses that occurred during the developmental stages were crazy! The thing was little more
than a round tube with a propeller on one end, and a long shaft on the other where an explosive charge
could be placed. There were nine volunteers inside pedaling on the crank the made the propeller work.
The idea was to blast the Union blockade out of the water. The CSS Hunley was the first submarine to
sink an enemy ship (Housatonic) in combat. Even for folks that are not fans of civil war movies, this
film is worth watching once. Another great American civil war movie that was backed by Ted Turner.

Up Periscope ( 1959 )
Is the sub's captain a coward? His 2IC doesn't think so and resists mutinous mutterings from the crew.
The reverse of the 'overly fanatical captain' plot. Garner trying hard to make transition from TV to

going out to recon a Jap-held island, etc.

U-571 ( 2000 )
U-571 revolves around an American team of naval officers, that must take a German submarine that
has been damaged out at sea. On board is the “Enigma”, which is a code machine that the Germans are
using to communicate between each of the U-Boats. It is extremely important that the U.S. take the
sub, and gain control of the code machine in the hopes of turning the tide of the war. This movie is
chock-full of great special effects, and the sound that goes along with the movie knocks your socks
right off. The acting is well done, and the setting within the sub is done with stark realism.

Lt. Commander Dahlgren: Oh, she'll go all the way to the bottom if we don't stop her.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea ( 1961 )
This is notable as the worst use of sub technolgy in a sci-fi movie. Ridiculous and dull. Totally cool
submarine, a dangerous mission, and that totally menacing flaming Van Allen radiation belt.
