School Poetry Out Loud Coordinator Responsibilities for 2007-2008



Possible school coordinators include English Department Chair, English/Language Arts teacher,

Theatre Arts teacher, school counselor, school administrator, parent or volunteer.





1. Register for North Carolina Poetry Out Loud at www.ncarts.org/url between Monday,

September 17, 2007 and 5 pm, Friday, October 5, 2007. No late registrations will be

accepted.



If you are interested in being your school’s Poetry Out Loud Coordinator, please check the

appropriate box on your registration form. Every participating school must have a School

Coordinator in order to take part in Poetry Out Loud.



2. Collect materials for teachers from your District Poetry Out Loud Coordinator and distribute to

participating teachers in your school in September/October.



All participating teachers will receive the 2007-2008 Poetry Out Loud Teacher’s Guide in hard

copy, hardcopy anthologies of approximately 130 poems, and an audio CD of distinguished actors

and writers reciting and talking about poetry



Extensive information about Poetry Out Loud—including all the poems eligible for the competition

and answers to frequently asked questions—is available at www.poetryoutloud.org.



3. Coach teachers in your school on holding classroom competitions. Complete information is

available in the Poetry Out Loud Teachers Guide, which you will receive in October. This guide is

also available at www.poetryoutloud.org.



4. Arrange and hold your school Poetry Out Loud Competition by Friday, February 9, 2008.

Information on coordinating your school contest is available at

http://www.poetryoutloud.org/guide/guide_organizing.html. Information on judging the school

contest is available at http://www.poetryoutloud.org/guide/guide_Judging.html. Each school will

have a first and second place winner. Classroom level winners must be determined by Friday,

January 26, 2008. Contest determining school winner and runner-up must be held by Friday,

February 9, 2008.



5. Collect information on your school winner. POETRY OUT LOUD SCHOOL WINNER FORM will be

available at after Friday, September 15, 2007. Send the completed form to your District Poetry Out

Loud Coordinator by Friday, February 9, 2008. All winners must be U.S. citizens or permanent

residents, to comply with federal immigration and tax law. All district winners and chaperones will

be responsible for their own transportation, food and lodging costs to the North Carolina Poetry

Out Loud Championship on Saturday, March 17, 2008.
