NELL BRYDEN

New album WHAT DOES IT TAKE? (COOKCD508) out now
“An album of jazz torch singer style, and Patsy Cline heartache. Her vocal versatility is supported by
consummate songwriting skills ... Think of a female Nick Lowe with a better voice” (Uncut)
“An eclectic collection, it takes in country blues, Dixieland Jazz and her warm, rich voice even shows a
touch of the Roberta Flacks” (Q).
“American blues star Nell Bryden is shooting to the top” – The Sun (Scotland)
Following her recent support slots with Timothy B Schmit, and her own successful headline show in

Bryden’s recently released single, Tonight, is currently on the B-list at BBC R2. Her previous single,
Not Like Loving You, spent an incredible six weeks on the R2 A List, and was described by the Daily
Mirror (****) as “a big bold production – keening pedal steels, bright edgy horns and a massed
choir – push the incomparable thrill of the title to the fore. Swell”.
Her album, What Does it Take? was recorded in New Orleans and New York, and produced by
Grammy-winning producer David Kershenbaum (Tracy Chapman, Tori Amos, Joe Jackson) and John
Hill (MIA, Norah Jones, Shakira, Santogold). The album was originally released in late 2008 and titled

Second Time Around, but has subsequently been remixed and two new songs – What Does It Take
and Not Like Loving You – plus a re-record of Pavement were added.
Bryden is fast becoming one of the most talked about and sought after new artists, building the buzz
the old-fashioned way with word-of-mouth endorsements of her live shows. With four international
tours (and 500 shows) in the last 18 months under her belt, including tours with KT Tunstall, and The
Counting Crows, and a self-released debut single, What Does It Take, spending 7 weeks on the BBC
R2 A-list, she is definitely one to watch.
Despite her hectic touring schedule in 2009, Bryden took time out to support the Armed Forces. In
November, she participated in the recording of “We Will Remember Them”, the charity single in
support of Help For Heroes, which featured a cast of 200 artists, including Hayley Westernra, Michael
Bolton, Mica Paris, Robin Gibb, Paul Rodgers, and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She also set
aside her political preconceptions to entertain the troops in Iraq – not once, but twice, becoming, in
the process, a Forces Sweetheart. Award winning documentary maker Susan Cohn Rockefeller, of the
Rockefeller dynasty in the USA, commissioned a team of filmmakers to go with Bryden on her second
visit. Entitled Striking A Chord, the documentary provides an insight into how the troops are coping,
and how they feel at home when music is played, amongst other things. It is due to be released later
this year.
