HAVE A JUNIOR MEMBER DESCRIBE THE AREA, JOB AND ANYTHING ELSE OF
INTEREST TO A NEWLY ARRIVING MEMBER
Primarily, Charlevoix “The Beautiful” is a summer resort town filled with gorgeous summer
homes and cottages nestled in the hills, valleys, and lakes of Northern Michigan. Charlevoix and
the surrounding areas are a true sportsman’s paradise with trophy small/large mouth bass,
monster salmon, and lake trout. Also, hunting for all types of critters in the vast woodlands is
also remarkable. For those skiers and snowboarders, there are four different resorts within an
hour’s drive of the Station. Snowmobiliers won’t be left out either, with the Charlevoix trail
head less then a mile from the station, which leads into the entire Northern Michigan trail
system. Don’t forget about the great biking, camping, and golfing here too!
Charlevoix is host to a couple fast food franchises, elegant restaurants, a bowling alley, and
Kmart. There is no mall within the immediate area, and for serious shopping, a trip to one of the
surrounding towns; Traverse City, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, East Jordan, will be required. If
your looking to further your education, there is a community college in Petoskey, just a short 30
minute drive away.
Station Charlevoix is set on the east mouth of the Pine River Channel, located between Lake
Charlevoix and Round Lake. Here is where new members spend a majority of their time when
first reporting. The first step is to qualify as a communications watchstander, following with
boarding team member, and crewman on the unit’s three resources: 41’ UTB, 25’ RB-HS, and
ice skiff. The Station responds to ice rescue in the winter months, and members leave with a
premier level of ice training. The Station has basketball courts, a playground, variety of morale
boats and equipment, and a gym to occupy off time.
