Maps for Local History
Tuesday 6th September 10.00 am - 1.00 pm
Learn about the different types of maps held at the Record Office and what they can tell you about
your local history. View some of our original maps and discover how to use our finding aids to
help you discover what’s available for your area.

Heritage Open Days: Medicine Through Time
Saturday 10th September. Tours at 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm
Come on an informal tour Behind the Scenes at the Record Office as part of Heritage Open Days
weekend. Learn about the work of the Record Office and visit our strongrooms. View some of our
original documents to do with medicine and health and see how we treated illnesses in the past.
Tours last 45 minutes.
Cost: FREE.
Family History: Interviewing and Reminiscence
Saturday 17th September 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
A workshop run by Jennifer Cranfield about how to find out about your family history by asking
existing family members. Discover how to interview successfully, and learn about the advantages
and pitfalls of oral history.
Cost: £12.00.
Life in the Madhouse: Warwick County Lunatic Asylum
Saturday 24th September 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm
The history of the Hatton Asylum provides an insight into how the Victorians treated the mentally
ill. The Hatton Records are kept at the Record Office and include admission notes, case books
and photographs. Learn about this intriguing collection and view some of the original documents.
Cost: £6.00, concessions £5.00.
Archives Online

Come along to this free session and find out how to access and use the County Record Office’s
online catalogue ‘Warwickshire’s Past Unlocked’.

Family History: Records of Birth, Marriage and Death
Saturday 15th October 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
This workshop, run by Jennifer Cranfield, shows you how to get the most out of the information
that is contained within birth, marriage and death certificates. Such certificates can offer a wealth
of information that can help build a picture of your ancestors. Learn how to do this and go online
to see what information is available.

Black History Sources at the County Record Office
Saturday 15th October 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm
To celebrate Black History Month, the County Record Office invites you to discover the sources
on black history available at the Record Office and how to find them. View original documents to
do with everything from 18th century slavery to 20th century immigration in Warwickshire.
Cost: £6.00, concessions £5.00.
Help with Handwriting from the Seventeenth Century
Saturday 29th October 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
A workshop to help you unravel some of the difficulties of seventeenth century handwriting
with experienced local historian Christine Hodgetts, with the chance to work through practical
examples from the County Record Office.
Cost: £12.00.
Family History: Victorian Census Records
Saturday 5th November 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
Census Records provide invaluable information to the family historian from the 1840s to the
latest available census in 1911. Find out how best to interrogate the census and go online to see
what information is available for your ancestors.

Medieval Buildings
Monday 7th November 10.00 am - 4.15 pm
This study day explores medieval buildings and the people who built them. Find out how buildings
reflected medieval lifestyles; from the town and country, for the rich and for the poor. Discover
how our understanding of medieval building has developed from studying documents,
archaeology and the buildings themselves.
Cost: £15.00. Please bring your own lunch.

Unlocking the Parish Chest
Saturday 12th November 9.30 am - 11.30 am
Parish records contain so much more than ‘just’ baptism, marriage and burial registers. Come
and find out how the church used to look after the parish and its people, including a look at
apprenticeship and other poor law records, churchwardens’ accounts and vestry minutes. Learn
how to find these records for your own parish at the County Record Office.
Cost: £2.50.
No need to book, just drop in any time between 9.30 am and 11.30 am.
Using the Internet for Local History
Saturday 19th November 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
Are you getting the best out of the internet? This workshop will help you improve your research
skills.

Family History: Parish Registers
Saturday 26th November 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
Parish Registers provide invaluable information to the family historian and can potentially date
back to the 16th century. Learn what you can find out from reading the parish registers and
discover what’s available online and in record offices.

Lost Ancestors
Saturday 3rd December 9.15 am - 12.15 pm
Have you reached a brick wall in your family history research? This workshop will give you fresh
ideas to assist you in tracking down that elusive ancestor.

Heritage Open Days Events
Tour of Warwick Courts and Judges House
Friday 9th September
Tours start 1.00pm, 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm.
For Heritage Open Days we are offering tours of Judges House and the historic Warwick Courts.
Join us to explore the buildings and see areas of a court no longer in use.

Discover Chesterton Windmill
Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th September
Open from 10.30 am - 4.30 pm, last entry at 3.30 pm.
A unique chance for a look at Chesterton Windmill, a local landmark that was built between 1632-
33.
Venue: off the Fosse Way (B4455) near Harbury.
Cost: FREE entrance to windmill on a first-come, first-served basis. Car parking £1.00. For

From an irate 18th century mother to letters home from the First World War, listen as the past
comes to life through a selection of letters held at the County Record Office. Discover how the
