Hajj-al-Tamattu

Lesson 12 and 13

The months of Hajj are: Shawwal, Dhul-Qa’dah and the first ten days of Dhul-Hajjah.

The hajj can start with umrah at any time during those months with the intention of

waiting to perform hajj from the 8th to 12th of Dhul-hajjah.

Performing Hajj al Tamattu (hajj and umrah together)

Umrah :

1) At Migat: (a place designated for putting on Ihram), every Hajj must put on Ihram

with the intention for Umrah.

a) Ihram for men consists of 2 unsewen pieces of seamless cloth and for women

regular modest clothes.

b) On the state of Ihram a person sustain from the following: cutting hair or nail, kill a

living creature, combing hair, perfume and sex with spouse.

2) Tawaf: Circling the Kabbah 7 times starting and ending at Al-Hajar Al Aswad (the

black stone). Before starting tawaf the hajj should either kiss touch or point to Al

Hajar Al Aswad. This Tawaf is called Tawaf Al Qadum (Arrival).

3) Multazam: a place between al-Hajar Al-Aswad and the gate of the Kabbah, where

the hajj makes special du’a.

4) Maqam Ibrahim: Prophet Ibrahim’s footprint. The Hajj performs 2 raka’at at the

maqam and makes special du’a.

5) Drinking Zamzam: the hajj should drink the water while facing the Kabbah and

making a du’a.

6) The Sai: a brisk (quick) walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times.

The brisk start at Safa and ends at Marwah. The Journey from the top of Safa to the

top of Marwah is considered, as one brisk, while from the top of Marwah to the top of

Safa is another.

7) Halq (cutting or shaving) or Taqsir (shortening): Cutting ones hair is for men

and shortening is for women and this is done after the Hajj finishes Sai. For men it is

preferable to cut and not shave at this time because he will need to shave later in

the main Hajj.

8) Take off Ihram: Now the Umrah is complete the hajj (pilgrim) takes off Ihram all

the restrictions of Ihram are lifted completely. The pilgrim waits in Mecca, where he

lives a normal life, until the 8th of Dual-Hajjah to start the rituals for hajj.

The Hajj :

1) At Miqat [8th of Dual-Hajjah]: Every hajj must put on Ihram with the intention of

performing the Hajj and then go to Mina.

2) Mina [8th of Dual-Hajjah and 9th fajr only]: Which is a valley 3 miles from

Mecca. The hajj goes there at noon where he prays each prayer at its appointed

time, but Qasr (shoretened): Zuhur (2) Asr (2) Magrib(3) and Isha (2). The hajj

spends the night and prays Fajr and leaves to Arafat after sunrise.

3) Arafat [9th of Dual-Hajjah]: This is the most important ritual in the Hajj, where the

hujjaj stay at Arafat till noon afterwards the Imam delivers a suitable sermon (the

prophet (sas) gave his last sermon from the Mount of Mercy in Arafat). The hujjaj

pray together Zuhr (2) and Asr (2) with one Adhan and 2 Iqama. They stay all day in

prayer, supplication and reading Quran till sunset. They leave right after sunset to a

place called Al Musdalifa or Al-Mash’ar Al-Haram.

4) Night at Al-Muzdalifah [night of the 9th and fajr of the 10th of Dual-Hajjah]:

Once they arrive there the hujjaj start to collect pebbles. Then they pray Magrib (3)

and Isha (2) with one Adhan and 2 Iqamas. They spend the night in the open field.

They pray Fajr infront of Al- Mash’ar al Haram, facing Qibla, to remember Allah, offer

supplication and glorify Allah as much as possible.

5) Back to Mina [10th of Dual-Hajjah]: This is the first day for casting pebbles and it

is also the day of Eid. The hujjaj cast 7 pebbles on Al Jumrat AL Kubra (Satan

biggest symbolic pillar) on the first day only, the 10th. On the 11th and the 12th the

hujjaj cast 21 pebbles each day seven on each of the 3 jamarat starting from Al

Jumrat A l Sughra (the smallest), then Al Jumrat Al Wusta (the medium), to the

Jumrat Al Kubra (the biggest) The hujjaj should have caste 49 pebbles by the 12 th.

Afterwards the hujjaj slaughter the sacrificial animal.

Some other options:

a. The hujjaj can cast pebbles till the 13th ot Dhul-Hajjah.

b. The slaughter can take place anytime until the sunset of the 4th day of Eid.

c. If a hajj has no sacrifice to slaughter he/she can fast 3 days during hajj and seven

back home.

d. The hujjaj can leave Mina in the night of the 10th of Dual-Hajjah to go to Mecca to

perform Tawaf Al Ifada and return back to Mina in the same night to throw the

pebbles for the 11th and 12th.

6) Shaving the head: After shaving, the hajj is partially out of Ihram. Which means

that all the Ihram’s restrictions are lifted except for having sex with one’s spouse.

7) Back to Mecca (Tawaf Al Ziyarah or Al Ifada, visit): It is an obligatory part of

Hajj without it one’s hajj is not accomplished. The Hajj is now over. Those who

visited Medina before the Hajj started will go back home and those who didn’t will go

visit Medina. Before leaving Mecca the hajj can perform Tawaf al Wada (farewell),

which is a Nafal.

8) Visit to Medina: This is not a necessary part of Hajj. It is made out of love to visit

the second holiest city in Islam. While in Medina a hajj can visit Masjid an-Nabi, the

prophet’s grave (offer Salam to him). The first masjid in Islam (Quba), and the masjid

that has 2 Qiblahs (Masjid Al-Qiblatain).
