THE CURSILLO MOVEMENT OF BALTIMORE NEWSLETTER
JUNE, 2005 WWW.CURSILLO.ORG
Going Forth
In the By-Laws of the Cursillo Movement of Baltimore, it states “we are a movement of the Catholic Church and that by means of its own method makes it possible for people to live what is fundamental to being a Christian and to live it together. It helps people to discover and fulfill their personal vocations, and it promotes the creation of core groups of Christians who leaven their environments with the Gospel.” PREAMBLE: “Unity of purpose is essential if there is to be a courageous and total service of Jesus Christ through the Cursillo Movement….The secretariat is to be of service to the total movement.” A spirit of unity, service and humility are keys for all Christians. This is even more important for those who are serving in positions of leadership within the movement ie: on the secretariat, on core groups for the ultreyas, on team for the 3-day weekend. I would like to offer MANY Thanks to Han Lee and Drew and Bette Dedrick for serving on the secretariat!! Han was our treasurer. Drew and Bette were the coordinators for the palanca. On behalf of the community, we are very grateful for your time, talents and example in these areas. Welcome to Bill Ziegenhein who is now our treasurer and Terry Anderson who is the palanca chairperson. Thank you both for saying “yes” to filling these spots. A note on Palanca - The National Secretariat has established palanca intentions for us as a community in the United States. These have been published in the National Newsletter. The intentions are as follows: Mondays – for all Secretariats Tuesdays – for all School of Leaders 1
Wednesdays – for all Cursillistas in the United States Thursdays – for the Cursillo Movement’s Apostolic Actions Fridays – for all 3-day Cursillo Weekends Saturdays – for the VI World Encounter The secretariat can do nothing without the support, service and prayers of the whole community. We face many challenges. Please continue to pray and offer your service to Christ in the Cursillo.
Pastoral plan
In our Pastoral plan for the School of Leaders section, it states that the purpose of the School of Leaders is “to provide for growth in the areas of Christian community, spirituality, methodology, doctrine, formation and the Cursillo mentality.” Article III of the By-Laws states that “The School of Leaders will supply the Secretariat with teams of leaders who are technically and spiritually prepared to serve in all aspects of the Cursillo Movement.” The School of Leaders is the working arm of the Cursillo. Come join us. 1Corinthians 12:4-6 “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.”
The secretariat is looking at the vibrancy and health of all our ultreyas. The ultreya is the “reunion of the friendship groups.” This is how the community comes together and grows. There needs to be core group of 3-5 people who will take the responsibility to plan the ultreyas, line up a witness speaker, music, refreshments etc. A spiritual director is also a must. Their role is to offer individual spiritual direction when needed and to summarize the witness and the echoes (comments made after the witness talk). After participating in the ultreya, people should feel uplifted and encouraged to go “onward”. A big THANK YOU goes to Vern and Bonnie Weinkam for being the ultreya coordinators at St. Jane Frances for many years!! It was a very difficult decision to make but there no longer will be ultreya at St. Jane Frances. Also, THANK YOU Mark Scott for being our web-master over the years!! This service to the community is extremely helpful. We are in the process of transitioning this “opportunity to serve” to Bob Barrick. Welcome aboard. And while I’m thanking those who provide a much needed service that is done in the background, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Rose Marcin for our prayer line!! What a convenient way to keep in touch with the prayer needs of others. Also, as part of our Pastoral Plan, we want to reach out to minorities in the Baltimore Diocese. There is a large Spanish population in the Baltimore area. In Region II (Baltimore is in Region II) there is a vibrant Spanish speaking Cursillo
2
community. They can offer us a Spanish speaking or by-lingual team. All we have to do is provide candidates. We are looking at ways that we can reach them and invite them to make a cursillo weekend. I am aware of some Cursillistas in our community that speak spanish and I’m sure there are more. Maria, Jose’, Hillevi, Lourdes, Paul. Please contact someone on the secretariat if you have any ideas or would like to be part of this effort.
Region II meeting
The theme at our recent Region II meeting in Carlisle PA was “The Eucharist and Progressive Conversion” and “Be Not Afraid”…
Evangelizing within our Cursillo environments
Here is a summary of the Friday night meditation by Fr. John Meyers – Spiritual Advisor for Region II. We ourselves are the Body of Christ. Baptism brings us into the one Body. God gives to us so that we can share with others. The gifts we have are not for ourselves. We must have respect for differences. What we are in Christ is forever. It is dangerous to decide that we don’t need “this one” or “that one”. By doing this we actually reject Christ himself. The wealthy need the poor and viceversa. Our salvation is a community thing. The priests are the weakest because their responsibilities are greater. They are human…they need our care. If one member suffers, all suffer. Do we consider someone else’s success ours too or do we bring them down? Our belonging to the Body of Christ is both a gift and a calling…a verb and a noun…a total lifestyle. We are called to live it and it is costly, however, it is more costly not to. Ask God to correct our vision so we can see others as He does, to serve them and to love them. Remember that “the stone rejected by the builders became the cornerstone.” Dick Hemler is on the service team for Region II and is from Beverly NJ. He talked about the Cursillo environments. What is the ideal of our cursillo environment – is it to follow Christ & His mission? What is the motivating force – is it Love? What is the combination of goals & objectives – is it to be a Christian community? If people understand and stay true to its’ purpose, the School of Leaders will be the spiritual engine that drives the movement. The School of Leaders gives input to the secretariat. Meets regularly – once/week. Members of the secretariat should attend the School of Leaders, to coordinate, delegate, direct and be a community. The secretariat meets regularly – once/month. They stay in contact with the local Bishop and other diocesan Cursillo movements.

Ultreya sends Christians out into our environments with a sense of renewal. It should be available weekly. After meeting and sharing with other cursillistas from around the region and around the country, they say that a one or 1 ½ drive to an ultreya is not unusual for most diocese’. The witness talk should be 10 minutes and demonstrate how the speaker is transforming the environments (home, work, school, or social etc). It can also include elements of piety and study. Afterwards, there should be 2 echoes about how the talk affected the listener or what they learned about themselves from hearing the witness talk. The Spiritual advisor should summarize the talk and tie it in with the Gospel. It is preferable if the Spiritual advisor and those doing the echoes know the subject of the witness talk ahead of time. The 3-day weekend is for the candidates. No one “deserves” or “earns” the right to be on the team. The team members must be living the cursillo talks and method of friendship group reunion, ultreya, and regular attendance at the School of Leaders. They must be willing to serve in humility. Our very own Maureen Tomcalla gave a talk on “The Process of Study of the Environments” which is summarized on page 6.
The National Encounter
The National Encounter is July 28-31, 2005 at Benedictine college in Kansas City. The theme is “Be messengers of Joy”. Workshops will center on “friendship” and its relationship to Pre-Cursillo, Cursillo, and Post-Cursillo. Jesus said in John 15:15 “I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends…” What does the phrase “Make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ” mean to us as Cursillistas? How is friendship key to the Group Reunion, Ultreya and the School of Leaders? The airport of destination is MCI. More information is available on the National web-site www.cursillo.org. If you want to go, sign up soon. This year there will be the ultreya on Friday night and a fiesta on Saturday night. The fiesta will include time for the performance of a song or dance from the different cultures in the National Cursillo Movement. The new “Leaders Manual” and “3-Day Manual” should be ready at the National Encounter.

The Process of Study of the Environments - Summary Given at Regional meeting in September, 2005 by Maureen Tomcalla
The important thing about the Postcursillo is that is should provide an atmosphere and a format enabling one to actualize one’s full potential for becoming a saint and an apostle, according to one’s own charisms. How do we do this? Where do we start? We start with our Group Reunions. Are the persons in the Group Reunion friends and Christians, who come together to be better friends and better Christians? Has the friendship been carried to the supernatural realm? Group Reunion is not another obligation, but a help toward perseverance. Is your Ultreya a place where you can discover in very specific terms the manner in which you live what is fundamental to being a Christian? Is it a joint Reunion of all the groups? Is it alive, vibrant, authentic? Does the Ultreya form and foster friendship groups? Do I contribute to all of this? The School of Leaders is the place where Christians can be formed into holiness as a permanent way of life – the model of life taught by the School’s according to the Spirit, whose fruit is holiness. Are your members living and working in a communal way, sharing the experiences that occur in the process of structuring what is going on in the School? A certain spirit is generated within the group. In the environment of your school of leader’s, what is the spirit generated? Are our relationships in our Group Reunion, Ultreya, School of Leaders loving? To do this we need to use the same method we use on the weekends. Get to know one another, share and live the Eucharist together, and add the openness to grace. To achieve these we need generosity, faith in the strength of the Holy Spirit, Humility & Love to work as a team, a sense of responsibility and initiative and dedication. Our Group Reunions, Ultreyas, School of Leaders need to be living witnesses that speak of Christ so that we can stir up other groups of Christians who can influence others. De Colores

Dear Cursillistas, There is a sure way you can spread the good news of Cursillo … by contributing to the “Archbishop Borders Fund”. The Archbishop Borders Fund was established in his honor recognizing him for his many, many years of support of the Cursillo. The fund is used for a few things: to pay for the priests and seminarians attending the weekend, and subsidizing those candidates who can not pay their way to the weekend. Please consider making a donation to the Cursillo. Your contribution is tax deductible. On behalf of all the Cursillistas and as the treasurer of our Cursillo movement we solicit your generosity in making a contribution to the “Archbishop Borders Fund.” Make checks payable to The Cursillo Movement of Baltimore, memo: Archbishop Borders Fund. We thank you in advance on behalf of Cursillo Movement of Baltimore for your generosity. Decolores & Ultreya !!! Secretariat for the Cursillo Movement of Baltimore Bill Ziegenhein, Treasurer (225 Madingley Rd. Linthicum, MD)
ST. JANE’S ULTREYA CLOSED
I am sorry to announce the closing of Ultreyas at St. Jane’s Parish. Bonnie and I have been handling it for almost 3 years and are sorry to make this decision. We have not had any success in getting a Spiritual Director and attendance has dropped off. On the bright side, our last Ultreya on Friday April 15th was a great evening. We had 33 Cursillistas in attendance. The witness was Bob Geise from Church of the Crucifixion. It was a great witness. It was a great evening with which to close. Thanks to all those attending for making it a great evening. I ask you to please attend the Ultreyas at Our Lady of the Fields on the last Friday of the month. Remember it is the last Friday and not necessarily the 4th Friday. Bonnie and Vern Weinkam

School of Leaders Growth in Spirituality and Cursillo Mentality
My Dear Cursillistas: In the last newsletter I said that I would expand of the value, structure, and function of the School of Leaders in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. So here goes. The School of Leaders is the “Spiritual Engine” which drives our local movement in the Archdiocese. If it weren’t for a few dedicated individuals who believe that Cursillo is the essence of their Christian experience, our movement and possibly your “spiritual life” would be dead in the water. Each week we gather to “Become more of everything a Cursillista should be”. We group but our grouping “tripod” focuses on what we are doing to enhance the movement. We have doctrinal presentations by our clergy to help us learn more about our faith and how, if possible, it relates to the movement. We have presentations or study the techniques of the movement. This ultimately makes us more effective in bringing others to Jesus. We also do the work of the sections, the nuts and bolts, of carrying out our operational focus. Finally, we visit our Lord in chapel and ask that we workers and our Movement be sanctified and blessed with continued involvement of the Holy Spirit. The School of Leaders is a continuation not only of the three day weekend but your 4th day. As important as it is to be asked to attend a “Weekend” as a candidate, or to participate on “Team”, it is more important and a privilege to be asked and serve as a member of the School of Leaders. Our mindset has to change from looking at the “School of Leaders” as a burden on our time and see it as it truly is - a place where we can grow as Christians in most meaningful way. If your life has benefited from the “Weekend” and you want to enhance your 4th day experience come to the “School” on Thursday evenings and please take it as a compliment when you are personally asked to enhance your “Spiritual Engine”. De Colores – Your Loving Servant Deacon Bill

Update from the School of Leaders
Our Cursillista Deacons and Priests have given us such wonderful doctrinal presentations on our study of the Mass. We are being well formed. We very much appreciate the efforts of Fr. Larry Adamchek, Fr. LeoPatalinghug, and Deacons Bill Pearson, Monti Montaldo, Chuck Hicks and Jim Awalt. We continue through June with the study of Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Redemptionis Sacramentum, and Mane Nobiscum Domine. Beginning in July we will study the parts of the Mass. School has completed the study of First Conversations of Calle Figuera. Each chapter begins with a series of “take off” discussion comments. Our study this year was of the last 3 topics. “Life”, “Normalcy” and “Joy”. Recently we began the study of Structure of Ideas. For the remainder of the year we will use this book to discuss the topics of the 2004 national encounter. There also are CDs of the workshops from the encounter. The topics include the rollos on the weekends plus all the other 3-day activities. Meology – the study of what I want. In Fr. Leo’s presentation on the General Instruction of the Roman Missal we learned about Meology. In applying Meology to the Mass, we focus on what we want instead of what theology dictates. We criticize the homily, the way the lector reads, even the priest. We don’t like the music or we don’t like not having music. We want to leave “on time” to make that game. We go to the altar not spiritually prepared. We let our minds become distracted with our personal thoughts. All these things focus on ME, what I want, what I think, what I need. Meology can be applied to just about anything, not just the Mass. With Cursillo, for example, we have been trying to return to the original charism presented to the Holy Spirit through Eduardo Bonine. Many Cursillistas openly resist returning to what is authentic. We often hear comments like “When I made my weekend,” or “In such and such diocease they do…” or “I like …” or “Why change what isn’t broken” or “Why re-invent the wheel.” Probably all of us have made some kind of Meology statement about Cursillo. Well I challenge all of us to study and learn what is authentic and come to School of Leaders with open minds and hearts. School meets every Thursday 7 – 9 p.m. St Philip Neri Room 9A of the school and in the rectory during the summer. Hope to see you there. De Colores, Susan Burns

Mary and Martha Witness By Susan Burns Last week I met with the management staff of the Northeast Pa. region. I am the controller for a company that provides services to people with mental and developmental disabilities. I sat and listened, awestruck by their excellence. The managers are all mental health professionals and para-professionals, trained to deal with mental illness not budgets, profit and loss statements, and human resources management. Listening to them discuss the issues of three years of flat budgets, not even COLA increases, while continuing to motivate and retain staff, to temporarily house 11 clients in a motel until the power was restored from the ice storm which had paralyzed the Pocono area, yet not sacrificing the quality of care to the people we serve, I kept thinking of the Gospel story of Mary and Martha. These managers had chosen the better part. The accounting staff in Baltimore, although necessary, are like Martha. The challenging service these professionals are being called to do is like Mary, the better part. I gave this Gospel story a lot of thought. It seems to me when we wear the Martha hat, we are doing Christian things, but when we wear the Mary hat, we are being Christian. Nearly every Friday night Paul Yetter, Dave Luddy and I join Deacon Ed and Francine Stoops in Baltimore to feed the poor. The Marthas are those who prepare the food and come to serve it, a very necessary Christian thing to do. We become Mary as we become a friend to our parking lot guests. We are being Christian when we take the time to just talk to a friend, most of our guests are very lonely and may not talk to anyone all day or even for a few days. We are being Christian when we take the time to listen to our friend, so they have trust to tell us what they need; help with a security deposit to move into an apartment, a ride to a rehab facility, a bus token, a warm blanket, or maybe a homemade sweet potato pie. Our guests witness us being Christian and they respond the same, sharing their food with late comers, sharing news about where to get work, trusting God to provide when the work you found goes to someone else, treating others respectfully, letting the peace of Christ take you from despair. There is a huge need for the Marthas of the world, but the Marys have chosen the better part.
