Ocean Festival Has Arrived
This Saturday, 13th August from 11.00am the Pacific
grounds will be alive with the sounds, sights and aromas of
our Ocean Festival. Among the many great prizes on offer,
people will be able to win an ipod touch by correctly
identifying the places that Kevvy has visited during his time
on the Sunshine Coast. There will be rides, side show alley,
tasty food, cooking demonstrations by Four Ingredients author Kim McCosker, Kombi
parades and races, performances and chances to win other great prizes through the
major raffle and cent auction. We will also have the opportunity to support people and
families affected by flooding in the Lockyer Valley and by famine in Somalia in the 10th
Year Anniversary memorabilia room.
Thank you to the many parents, staff and students who have added that extra zing to
the day by being generous with donations and time. A special thank you to Ocean
Festival Coordinators, Mr Sean Cawley, Mrs Caroline Block, Mrs Di Gretton, and
Mrs Linda Wulff and sponsors GJ Gardner Homes, First Class Accounts, Pizza Capers
Currumundi Marketplace, Stockland, ATF, Cruiseabout Caloundra, Medical Objects and
the Weekender. All that remains is for us to bring family and friends along for a great
day!

Principal’s Log
Well done to our Middle and Senior College staff, students
and parents for their generosity in donating to the Pastoral
Care Group baskets. They were superb and a big
improvement on previous years! In another difficult to judge
competition, the winning group was Wira 1. It has been great
to see the energy going into the design of the PCG Kombis
and Boats for the Amazing Ocean Race and the support given
by Middle and Senior College students to P-5 students in the
making of their boats and Kombis for the parade.
COMPASS NO 238 | AUGUST 2011
Congratulations to our Year 8 Maths teams who came third
and seventh in the recent Queensland Association of
Mathematics Teachers’ Year Eight Mathematics Quiz. In a
tightly contested competition between 17 teams, only three
points separated first and third. Well done to Lachlan McKay,
Lawson Becker, Jonny Hall, Lara Culley, Isabella Williams
and Caitlin Eldridge. Thank you to Ms Bancks who has been
supporting these students through the PACE program.
Our music students have also acquitted themselves well. Our
Percussion Ensemble of Mikaela Swan, James Shingles,
Angus Singleton, Lachlan Aldous, Samuel Aitkin, Noah
Bennett, Mackenzie Turner and Lily Croke came second in
the Small Instrumental Ensemble section. Tutor, Mr Basil
Barletta, was extremely excited about the performance and is
to be congratulated on his teaching of the students. An
appreciative audience also enjoyed an intimate concert
provided by the Year 11 music students and members of the
Music Excellence program last Thursday night. Well done
and thank you to Mr Simpfendorfer, Mr King and Miss Morton.
This week’s newsletter highlights how the fortnight’s thread of
the importance of significant adults in young people’s lives is
strongly evident within the Pacific community. Through
academic learning, sport, music, cultural and service
opportunities young people benefit from strong service
orientated connections with adults and their peers. We thank
God for the blessings that we each receive through the
generosity of others and look forward to seeing you at the
Ocean Festival!

Becoming a Servant of All - Especially Of
Young People
Jesus called His disciples together and said, “You know that
those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over
them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great
among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be
first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not
come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a
ransom for many.” Mark’s Gospel, Chapter 10.
Jesus sends people to serve. Rather than ruling harshly over
others, Jesus sends us to look out for the needs of others and
to find opportunities to bless and help them. This is what
Jesus Himself does for us, when He goes to the cross.
COMPASS NO 238 | AUGUST 2011
Throughout history, children have often been treated poorly.
Jesus invites us to find other adults who can serve young
people and not to “lord it over them”. These are adults who
can role-model for young people how to grow up to be people
of care, respect and dignity. Such adults build positive and
lasting relationships with children on their journey to
adulthood.
Children succeed with these positive adult mentors because
they have someone in their world to listen to, to look at, and to
learn from. There is no “set criteria” for the kind of person
who can be a good influence on young people. Even the
oldest person can be a helpful guide and friend.
Our Thread for This Week
“OTHER ADULT RELATIONSHIPS”
A young person needs to receive support from three or more
non-parent adults. 41% of youth surveyed by Search Institute
in the USA have this thread of OTHER ADULT
RELATIONSHIPS in their lives.

Assessment
At this point in time, Senior College students should be well
underway in working through academic assessment. At the
beginning of the term, we spoke with the students about the
importance of time management. Over the coming weeks, it
is imperative that senior students prioritise their time to
complete ongoing academic assessment and revise for
examinations. This might mean that students inform their
employers about their academic commitments and, if
possible, avoid taking on extra part-time work. I wish the
senior students all the best, as they continue to work through
assignments and prepare for examinations.
Connecting
Over the past fortnight, there has been positive connections
observed across Prep to Year 12, where students from
various year levels have worked together to build kombis and
boats for the Prep to Year 5, Pacific Ocean Festival Parade.
You will be able to see their final products at the Pacific
th
Ocean Festival on Saturday, 13 August. Students will earn
points for their house (Bula, Mumba or Wira).

Limelight
Thank you to Cassie Sorrell and Courtney Hollindale for
organising the inaugural ‘Limelight’ competition. Also, thank
you to the judges and students who were involved in the
audition process. The judges have narrowed the talent down
to seven performances. These students will perform at the
Pacific Ocean Festival on Saturday. Everyone is encouraged
to come along and support these acts.
Where’s Kevvy?
Prep to Year 12 students, you may have been involved in the
weekly ‘Where’s Kevvy?’ prize draws to locate Kevvy
Kombi….
Kevvy Kombi’s Journey so far….
However now’s your chance to see his Sunshine Coast
journey in its entirety. Come along to the Pacific Ocean
Festival this Saturday, where you will see a wall of photos of
the journey.
If you are able to correctly name the Sunshine Coast locations
of where Kevvy Kombi has been, enter the competition and
you could be in the major prize draw. Cost of entry is $2 per
ticket or 3 tickets for $5. At the end of the festival, the first
drawn entry that correctly identifies all destinations will win an
iPod touch player.
So . . . ‘Where’s Kevvy?’

Physics Speaker - Alan Humrich
th
On Wednesday, 27 July our Year 11 Physics class was lucky
enough to listen to guest speaker, Alan Humrich, who was a
former Telstra employee and an expert in fibre optics. He was
the CEO of a Telstra part owned company called Australia
Japan Cable who, in 2001, completed their 12,700km
submarine cable directly connecting Australia and Japan, via
Guam.
The cable which Alan helped manage had a design capacity of
640Gbit/s which has now been upgraded to 1.0 Tbit/s and was
designed with a life-span lasting until the year 2026. The fibre
optic cables use the transmission of different "colours" of light
at varying frequencies to send digital messages across the
ocean floor to Japan and are used primarily for tele-
communications.
Alan helped explain the capacity of these cables by comparing
them to an old telegraph pole. The telegraph system could only

Medieval Day combined laughter and learning.

At 9.00am, the battle began, body parts stood to be scattered
across the battlefield. Sir Matt and Lady Judith kept everyone
under control and instead, knights and damsels paid close
attention to the demonstration of medieval weapons.
Students were able to test their precision when they launched
deadly arrows at Sir Matt but he ably deflected them with
ease.
A feast fit for kings was awaiting the students as they
completed their work on the battlefield. Chicken, cheese and
medieval onion tarts were amongst the banquet.

Fast Footwork Helped Knights Dance Into
Battle
Medieval Day was fun and eventful. We learnt many things
including how medieval people hunted and fought and how
dancing helped in battle. We also learnt how chess and
backgammon helped knights develop strategy to outsmart
their opponents. We also learnt that knights started training at
two years of age and that having clean armour was important
for survival.
Rory Singleton and Finlay Hall
This week, Year 8s were visited by Sir Matt and Lady Judith
for the Year 8 Medieval Day. All the students dressed up and
had a lot of fun. Swords clashed, arrows flew and we learned
a lot about the knights and medieval times.
It was interesting to find out how medieval people fought, ate
and lived.
The highlight of the day was interacting with the equipment.
We shot arrows, or at least tried to, and watched Sir Matt and
Lady Judith simulate a real sword fight. We passed around
the equipment and weapons and had a lot of fun.

Stockland
“The development of Birtinya Peninsula is coming along nicely with the first two stages complete. Together these stages have
created over 90 new homes sites and over 40% of these have already been sold.
With the development of these new home sites, Stockland has also created two new community parks, the first of which is located on
Birtinya Boulevard overlooking the beautiful Pangali Canal. This park features covered seating areas, playground equipment and
barbecue facilities making it perfect for the relaxed family day out.
The second park, found at the end of Headland Drive, features an exercise park and kayak launching beach and is ideal for those
who prefer park activity that produces a higher heart rate! Altogether, these are six pieces of exercise equipment including a spin
bike, lat machine and leg press. Already this park has proven to be very popular with personal trainers and the sporting minded!”
