The Last Hangman
Albert Pierrepoint (1905-1992) was the third member of his family to be a
head exectioner.
He executed many of the 20th century's most notorious criminals, including
large numbers of Nazi war criminals (though by no means all, as the majority
were dealt with under American justice)
He was the son of Henry Pierrepoint (d 1922, age 48) and the nephew of
Thomas Pierrepoint. All were born in Clayton near Bradford, believed to be
of Huguenot descent.
Henry moved to Failsworth during WW1.
Thomas died in 1954, aged 85, having been active as an executioner up to the
age of 76: He had a reputation of sucking boiled sweets at executions.
The pub that Albert ran was Help the Poor Struggler near Oldham, now
demolished.
