2011 SKY SEASON NOTES

All-Stars

Sylvia Fowles, Epiphanny Prince and Courtney Vandersloot were named to the 2011 WNBA Eastern Conference

All-Star Team. It was Fowles‟ third All-Star appearance and Prince and Vandersloot‟s first appearance. In the nine

seasons that the WNBA had an East vs. West All-Star game, 23 of the 26 teams that had 3 or more all-stars went

on to make the playoffs.

Take Care of the East First to Make the Playoffs

Last year the Sky was 7-15 vs. Eastern Conference opponents. This year the team is 6-7 vs. the East.

2011 SKY SEASON NOTES

Queen of Swat

Fowles recorded her 200th career blocked shot against the Seattle Storm on 7/19 which made her the 19th

leading shot blocker in WNBA history.

Big Syl Won‟t be Stopped

Sylvia Fowles leads the WNBA in scoring at 20.3 points per game. Fowles recorded 7 consecutive 20 point

performances dating from Friday, June 10 to Saturday, June 25. It was the longest streak of her career and a Sky

record. The second longest streak for the club is 4 held by Candace Dupree (6/15/07-6/23/07).

Fowles is also averaging 9.4 rebounds per game, a league third best. Only one player in the 15 year history of the

WNBA has averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds in a season – Chamique Holdsclaw (20.5 ppg and 10.9 rpg) for

Washington in 2003.

Record Performance

The Sky broke a few records in their 72-54 win over Tulsa on June 13. Chicago set marks in team steals (15), fast

break points (18), points against (54) and field goals made against (17) on its way to a convincing home win.

Big boards

With 12 rebounds against Atlanta (7/9/11), Sylvia Fowles recorded her 34th double-digit rebounding game for her

career passing Candace Dupree to become first on all-time Sky list for the number of games with 10+ rebounds.

Back to Back Games

Including Sunday‟s game in New York, the Sky is 19-27 in back-to-back games. Over the team‟s six year history the

Sky has recorded 6 double wins, 7 splits and 10 double losses.

Elite Company

With her second rebound against the San Antonio Silver Stars on Tuesday, June 28, Michelle Snow reached 2,000

boards for her career becoming only the 12th player in WNBA history to reach that milestone. The Sky forward also

became the 7th player in the league‟s history to record 2,800 points, 2,000 rebounds and 300 blocks in a career.

Snow also jumped up to 8th on the WNBA all-time blocks list with two swats against New York on July 10.

Best When It Counts

Epiphanny Prince „s 10 points in the second OT vs. Connecticut (6/23/11) not only sealed the victory, but was a

club record for points scored in an overtime period.

Double Double

Sylvia Fowles‟ double-double versus Connecticut (6/19/11) gave her 29, the most ever by a Chicago Sky player,

breaking the team mark set by Candace Dupree (2006-2009).

Breaking Records

In the (6/23/11) 2OT win over Connecticut, the Sky broke numerous team records:

Most Points in Game: 107 (Previous 105 @ Phoenix 6/20/08 (1 OT))

Note: Sky is the only current WNBA franchise to have never scored 100 points in a regulation game (record is 99 vs. Pho on

8/19/09). Tulsa has not scored 100 points but the franchise reached that number many times while in Detroit.

Most FG in Game: 43 (Previous 40 @ Phoenix 6/20/08 (1 OT))

Most Defensive Rebounds in Game: 35 (Previous 34 @ Washington 6/1/07)

Most Assists in Game: 28 (Previous 27 vs. Phoenix 7/27/07and vs. Connecticut 7/1/10)

It was also the 1st game in team history where 3 Sky players scored 20 or more points in a game (Prince 25, Fowles 24 &

Young 20). The team has had 15 games with 2 players scoring 20 or more.

SKY SEASON NOTES

Rookie of the Year Candidate

Point Guard Courtney Vandersloot is one of five promising young rookies who have taken the WNBA by storm in

2011. Leading the group in assists is Chicago‟s Vandersloot at 4.4 apg. Vandersloot is also fifth in scoring (8.3),

and third in minutes per game (26.9) among all rookies.

Winning Streaks

The Sky‟s early season three game winning streak (6/10/11 thru 6/17/11) was one of the franchise‟s best

behind a mark of 4 (5/27/10 thru 6/5/10) and is only the third time in franchise history to have such a streak.

Defense Defense

The Sky is holding its opponents to a .409 shooting percentage, tied for first in the WNBA, compared to a league

average of .436. Against Indiana on June 4, the Sky held the Fever to 30 percent shooting from the field (21-70),

the lowest ever by a Sky opponent.

Not in My House

With 11 blocked shots @ Atlanta (6/21/11), the team tied an all-time Sky record for blocks in a game. The mark

was last reached @ Minnesota (5/25/07). The Sky averages 6.28 blocks per game, best in the WNBA.

The Sky now has blocked 786 shots in just over 5 seasons including 113 in 2011. Fowles has rejected 204 on her

own.

Fowles leads the league in blocked shots at 2.5 per game. Michelle Snow is 4th at 1.7 blocks per game.

Guard Your Possessions

Epiphanny Prince is on a record breaking tear for steals. Leading the league at a gaudy 3.0 steals per game, she is

on pace to eclipse the WNBA all-time mark of 100 set by Teresa Weatherspoon of the New York Liberty in 1998.

Iron Women

Two Sky players are closing in on 200 consecutive games played. Michelle Snow has 199, which is the 16th

longest streak in WNBA history (STATS LLC). Cathrine Kraayeveld has 202 which is the 15th longest (STATS LLC).

The all-time NBA record is 263 set by Dawn Staley in 2006 and tied by former Sky forward Chasity Melvin in 2007.

First Win of 2011 at Home Opener

The Sky played their hearts out against the Sun in the team‟s home opener in front of a record opening crowd of

6,609. Vandersloot the first shot of the game (a three) and the Sky never fell behind, either leading or tied the

entire game.

Don‟t Sleep on Sloot

Chicago rookie Courtney Vandersloot started her Sky career strong by dishing out 7 assists against the Fever,

which is second most ever by a Sky rookie. In her first home game she tied a Sky record with three three-pointers

in a quarter, and finished 4-4 from beyond the arc, scoring 18 points.

Successful History

Rookie Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman has won at many levels: the EuroLeague Championship

in 2010, three consecutive Final Fours at LSU and two gold medals with USA basketball – one as a player.

Big Syl Breaking Records

Sylvia Fowles now owns the following Sky records: Season scoring average; points, double-doubles, field goals

made, blocks, total rebounds and defensive rebounds in a single season; and career blocks. She now has 46-

consecutive games in double figure points and she recorded seven straight games of 20+ points earlier this

season, which are also both Sky records.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Being active in the community is a high priority for the Chicago Sky. The Sky is set to participate in numerous

community projects throughout the year and focuses on building relationships with community groups and

organizations. By getting involved in communities throughout the Chicagoland area, the Sky hopes to inspire fans

to get involved.

Anti-Cruelty Society

On June 6th the Sky players participated in a photo shoot with the Anti-Cruelty Society. Starting in July a calendar

featuring the players and pets from the Anti-Cruelty Society will be available for a $10 donation. $5 will go to the

Anti-Cruelty Society and the other $5 will be donated to Sky Cares.

Anti-Bullying

At the July 30th game as a means to raise awareness to bullying the Sky is teaming up with Illinois Safe Schools

Alliance, Trevor Project, Affinity Youth Project, Center on Halsted and Howard Brown Health Center‟s Broadway

Youth project to host a workshop. Fans will also be asked to sign an anti-bullying pledge at the game.

Breast Health Awareness Night

For fifteen years, the WNBA Breast Health Awareness program has focused on generating awareness and

educating women about breast cancer in addition to raising funds for the initiative. The WNBA and its teams have

raised over $2.5 million to aid in the fight against breast cancer. The Chicago Sky has partnered this season with

the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

As part of the day‟s festivities, the Sky players will wear pink uniforms, and the Sky encourages all fans to wear

pink in an effort to “pink out” the arena. At the game, breast cancer survivors will be honored guests, and a silent

auction will take place where fans will have a chance to bid on the pink game jerseys, numerous sports

experiences and autographed memorabilia from teams and athletes from the Chicagoland area as well as the

WNBA. All of these proceeds will be donated to Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure.

Sky Cares

The Sky Cares‟ mission is to help build girls‟ self-esteem and provide girls and young women with positive mentors.

Sky Cares was founded in April, 2008 and successfully launched its signature programs, Chicago Sky Fitness

Festival and Learn to Soar, to actively support the team's mission through a series of workshops and game

experiences. The Sky Cares Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit foundation linked to the WNBA‟s Chicago Sky, wants

to challenge the status quo that has been created for girls.

HEAD COACH

POKEY CHATMAN AND

GENERAL MANAGER

Pokey Chatman was named head coach of the Chicago Sky on Oct. 29, 2010. The 2011 season marks

her first with the WNBA. She is the Sky‟s fourth head coach.

Chatman comes to the Sky from three years of coaching professional women‟s basketball in Russia and

15 years on the coaching staff at LSU, her alma mater.

She served two seasons as an assistant coach of Russian Spartak Moscow Region before being

promoted to head coach in 2010. That year, Chatman led the team to a perfect 16-0 record in the

Euroleague, the most competitive European basketball league, and also claimed the esteemed 2010

Euroleague Championship.

Chatman also coached the Slovakian national women‟s basketball team from 2008-2010. In 2009 she

took the traditionally unsuccessful Slovakian squad to the EuroBasket in Riga, where they narrowly

missed a spot in the FIBA World Championship.

Chatman was named head coach of the LSU Lady Tigers in the 2003-2004 season, when Sue Gunter was

forced to take medical leave mid-season. Chatman went a remarkable 47-3 in her first 50 games as

head coach, the second best starting record in women‟s basketball history. As head coach, she took the

Tigers to three consecutive finishes in the Final Four. For her work in her first full season as a head

coach, she was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Coach of the Year, Women‟s

MANAGER

Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Naismith National Coach of the Year and the

Victor Award Female Coach of the Year. Chatman earned a coaching record of 90-14 with the Lady Tigers

in three seasons as head coach and 15 seasons overall.

She has earned two gold medals with USA basketball, first as a player for the Junior National Team in

1987, and then as an assistant coach of the World University team in 2005.

As an LSU point guard from 1987-1991, Chatman led the Lady Tigers to their first ever SEC Tournament

title in 1991, and earned recognition as the tournament‟s Most Valuable Player. In her playing career at

LSU, she was named All-SEC three times, named Kodak All-American in 1991, and set 20 school records.

Chatman earned her Bachelor‟s Degree from LSU in December of 1991. She is originally from Ama,

Louisiana.
