London 2012 Dorney Lake July 2008 Dorney Lake Dorney Lake. Dorney Lake is a 2,200m eight-lane rowing course, with a separate lane alongside it that competitors use to warm up and return to the start of the course. It has been chosen as one of the venues to host the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is already a world-class facility: Dorney Lake hosted the 2006 FISA World Rowing Championships, with high praise from competitors and spectators. However, minor enhancements are needed to bring it up to the required standards for hosting events during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Planning applications for these enhancements will be submitted later this summer. Over 18 days during the Games, Dorney Lake will host Olympic Canoe/Kayak (Flatwater), Rowing and Paralympic Rowing events. It will have capacity for 20,000 seated spectators and a further 10,000 along the bank. Further planning applications relating to the temporary facilities required to host the Games will be submitted in 2010. Enhancements. Finish Line Bridge. The entrance to the return lane next to the finish line needs to be widened. This means the existing finish line bridge needs to be replaced with one of a greater span. The new two-lane bridge will be built along the same orientation and be of similar architectural design as the existing bridge. It will be retained after the Games. Bridge over the 1,400m cut-through. A new cut-through (a short stretch of water linking the main course with the return lane) is being constructed at the 1,400m point. This is required for competitors to reach the start of the Canoe/Kayak and Paralympic Rowing courses. A new bridge over this cut-through will be built to the same specification and design as the existing 600m cut-through bridge and start line bridge. The Droveway. The Droveway – a gravel access track running along the south side of the lake – is being upgraded so it can be used by construction and accredited Games-time vehicles. This will separate construction vehicles from other traffic using the venue during the construction period. A consistent design. The four Dorney Lake bridges, comprising two existing bridges (at the start line and 600m) and the two new bridges at 1,400m and the finish line, will be a family of structures. We want the design of the structures to be consistent, given that many people will see or use all four bridges as a sequence along the length of the lake. The features with which users will come into contact, such as kerbs, handrails and surfaces, will be designed in the same way and the bridges will share a common colour palette. Getting to the action. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is developing a detailed strategy for transport during the Games with stakeholders including: district, borough and county councils; the Highways Agency; South East England Regional Assembly; and Thames Valley Police. Further consultation on this topic will be carried out over the coming years. Sustainability. London 2012 is committed to creating venues and infrastructure in a sustainable way. At Dorney Lake our aim is to reuse concrete from the demolished bridge to reduce the amount of materials being transported on and off the site. Free construction hotline. As we carry out improvements to Dorney Lake we will try to limit disruption to local people as much as possible. A free 24-hour telephone hotline has been set up for those living and working near 2012 Games venues. This hotline goes straight to a member of the Community Relations team and local people are encouraged to use it if they have any questions or if they want to know more about construction at Dorney Lake.
