Shiva
• Started in the Chola Dynasty- late 10th-11th century
• Destroyer of the Universe
• Known as “Auspicious One”
• Father of Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed god, Husband of Parviti
• Is one of three main gods in Hindu religion
– Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva represent the three primary aspects of the divine in
Hinduism and are collectively known as the Trimurti. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu
is the maintainer or preserver, and Shiva is the destroyer or transformer.
• Shiva's role as the primary deity of Shaivism is reflected in his epithets Mahādeva
("great god"; mahā = great + deva = god),Maheśhvara ("great lord"; mahā = great +
īśhvara = lord), and Parameśhvara ("Supreme Lord").
Symbolism
• Trident: Shiva’s Weapon
• Third Eye: Shiva is depicted with a third eye with which he burned
Desire.
• Crescent Moon: Shiva bears on his head– most of the Hindu gods
are represented as gods with this symbol.
• Serpent: Shiva is always seen with a serpent. It is the animal that
represents him. Many gods have animals that would coincide with
their god.
• Mount Kailāsa: Mount Kailash in the Himalayas is his traditional
abode. In Hindu mythology, it represents the center of the universe.

Shiva represents the destroying and restoring qualities of the
all-pervading impersonal reality which is symbolized by Ohm
and referred to as Brahman.
It is the source of all movement within the cosmos,
represented by the arch of flames. The purpose of the dance
is to release men from illusion of the idea of the "self" and of
the physical world

queen of Shiva's, covered his eyes and the world was
consumed in darkness, so he opened this eye to restore
order and light to the world.
The Ganges River (Ganga River): It is
said that the Ganges river comes out of
Shiva’s Hair.
The Bull, or Nandi, acts like Shiva’s
horse. He rides it.
