I am pleased to announce that the Tamiami Composite Squadron has received authorization for our cadets to participate in a rifle
safety and marksmanship program. The purpose of the program will be to help cadets learn both basic firearm safety and
marksmanship skills and will follow the guidelines of the National Rifle Association (NRA) American Rifleman Qualification
program for juniors.
The program will be a recurring one, conducted on Saturday mornings with classroom training being completed at the squadron and
firearms training being completed at the Trail Glades range (Miami-Dade County Park).
All personnel involved with the youth marksmanship program have gone through extensive safety and instructor training and are at a
minimum certified as NRA instructors. Additionally, some members of the training staff hold NRA coach certification. Civil Air
Patrol adults will also be on site at all times to provide additional oversight of the activity and every participant will complete a range
safety briefing prior to the start of each marksmanship training session.
The cost of the program is $9.00 for the NRA training materials, $4.00 for the medal to be worn on the uniform. The range is $8.00
per visit plus a first time fee of $5.00 for the membership card. The cadet will also need to pay approx $5.00 for ammunition and
targets per session. The .22 rifles will be provided by the members and will be given a safety inspection at each outing. The cadets will
also need to have hearing and eye protection (which can be provided for a minimal fee).
If you would like your cadet to participate please fill out all of the accompanying forms and have your cadet return them to the
squadron. I would also like to invite and encourage you to attend the activity as an observer and the squadron has an “adult” release
form that can be signed which will allow you to do so. I also understand that you may prefer that your cadet not participate in this
program. Please let me assure you that that this program is not a part of the normal CAP cadet program curriculum and therefore your
cadet’s participation or lack thereof will have absolutely no bearing on their progression in the program.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if should you have any questions or concerns. I can be contacted at any of the following:
