Group work: Tour through Dublin
In Dublin are a lot of parks and gardens. The Phoenix park is one of the largest
designed landscapes of all European cities. There are many attractions like the
Wellington Testimonial, a huge obelisk, the Phoenix Monument and the Magazine
Sport. For children from 4 to 12 years old, there are playgrounds. There are also a
lot of cafés, tearooms and ice cream kiosks. In the park is a zoo, Dublin Zoo. Dublin
Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world. It contains 40 hectares with about 650
animals and birds from all over the globe.
The Temple Bar is Dublin’s Cultural Quarter and there are 3 outdoors markets:
Temple Bar Food Market, Designer Markt and Book Market. First we have the
Food Market, this food paradise is a must do when visiting the Temple Bar and it
takes place every Saturday. Designer Mart: This outdoor market showcases the very
best of handmade craft and design produced by Irish and Ireland-based artists. At
least we have the Book Market, this is a small but perfect heaven for booklovers and
music fans. In the evening you can go to the pubs because In the quarter are loads of
pubs. For example: the Oliver St John Gogarty.
Dublin has also 2 amazing shopping streets: Grafton Street on the South side and
Henry Street on the North side. Grafton Street is the more exspensive shopping
area with fashionable stores such as Brown Thomas. You can find there also the most
exclusive jewelry as the famous Bewley’s Cafés. Henry Street has department stores
such as the popular Arnotts and an assortment of popular clothing and footwear
stores. It is not the main shopping area but there are several nice shops and even 2
shopping centres.
We find a lot of monuments in Dublin like the Abbey Theatre, Bank of Ireland,
Christ Church Cathedral and many more.
The Abbey theatre is the most famous of Ireland and is also known as the National
Theatre of Ireland. It was created in 1904 by artists and playwrights.
The bank of Ireland is built in 1729. It was first used by the Irish Government.
The Vikings built the Christ Church Cathedral in 1030. In 1169 it was rebuilt from
wood into stone and it became a cathedral where you can still visit a crypt from 1169
in wich you can find magnificent relics.
