What to look for in a
computer
RAM – (Random Access Memory)
This is how the computer accesses programs;
more RAM means more done at the same time.
Generally the more the better; minimum 128KB
Depending on use of computer amount of RAM
should increase,
Games, photo editing, audio uses = more RAM
Paper typing, email checking = slightly less
GB > MB > KB > B
Hard Drive
Hard Drive is where programs and
information is stored. Average user should
have at least 40GB, more depending on
use.
Processor,
The processor is the brain of the computer,
measured in gigahertz, speeds around
3.06GHz common, should suffice.
CD/DVD Drive
CD-RW most common, although DVD-ROM
& DVD+/-RW available
For burning DVD’s DVD+/-RW best option
Other storage options
Floppy drive
External HD
Flash memory (USB, Firewire)
Monitor sizes and type personal
preference although screen resolution
should be at least 800 x 600
Speakers and sound card normally
sufficient although upgrades are
available and widely used.
Should have Ethernet & modem slots,
at least 2 USB ports and one open
expansion bay.
How much will it cost?
Computer prices are always dropping and a
decent entry desktop can be found for around
$700 while a laptop is generally start around
$150-200 more.
Some instances you are paying for name so it
pays to shop around.
Prices generally about $200 more for apple
based desktops than PC comparable

Windows logo registered trademark of Microsoft Corp., Inc.
Apple logo registered trademark of Apple Computers., Inc
Linux logo property of RedHat Software Inc.
Windows & Apple more common; Linux
mostly advanced users
Windows has most users, programs and
support but viewed as the least secure
and stable of the three
Linux able to run most windows
programs & has same basic
requirements but has least amount of
support.
Apple generally viewed as most stable
& used for “creative industries”
Peripherals
Printer usually not included with computer
and can work with different operating
systems.
Printer prices can vary depending on type,
uses, and maker.
Printers should be bought to fit needs of user
i.e. photo printer for printing pictures.
Web cameras, microphones, TV tuners all fall
in this category and are up to the individual
