SYLLABUS: ITALIAN 101 – ELEMENTARY ITALIAN 1
(Fall semester 2006)
Section 2 MWF, 12:00 P.M. – 12:50 P.M. Bishop 108
Section 3 MWF, 2:00 P.M. – 2:50 P.M. Hume 108
Italian 101 is a basic course for students with little or no previous
knowledge of Italian. In this course you will learn to communicate in Italian
in common, everyday situations; you will be able to ask and answer questions
about the present, the past, and the future, as well as to describe and narrate
in different tenses. Through a conversational-cultural approach this course
will also introduce interesting facets of Italy, Italian culture, and
contemporary Italian life. In order to achieve our goals, we will engage in a
variety of different activities: dialogues, conversations, interviews, oral
skits, games, compositions, videos, grammar-based exercises, and drills.
Classes are taught in Italian and are devoted to the practice of Italian,
focusing on comprehension and dramatization of different situations and
contexts. Therefore, you are expected to come prepared to class: each day you
will have to study the assigned sections and complete the exercises before
class.
Required Texts:
Lazzarino, Peccianti, Aski, Dini, Prego! An Invitation to Italian, 6th edition
(McGraw Hill)
A OneKey access card in order to complete online activities (Quia).
Course policies:
1.) Attendance:
Students will be allowed 2 absences without incurring a penalty. Beginning with
the third absence, students will lose 1 percentage point off of their final
grade for each absence up to a maximum of 6 absences. After a sixth absence, a
student earns an automatic F. Students will not have to present me with a
doctor’s excuse: illness and personal problems will count against these totals.
So, a good strategy is to “save” your allowed 6 absences for emergencies. Only
participation in university-sponsored activities, such as varsity sports, will
not count against these totals. Students should not assume that long periods of
absence due to illness will be forgiven: in most cases, students who have
missed an excessive number of classes due to severe illness will be advised to
withdraw from the course. An absence is not an excuse for coming unprepared to
the next class. It is your responsibility to make up the material you missed
(according to the calendar), to complete all required assignments, and to come
prepared to class as everybody else the next class meeting. In the case of
absences due to a documented illness or a family emergency, I am willing to
excuse the student from being prepared the first class after his/her return and
accept the homework with an extended deadline.
2.) Class Participation:
Total: 100 pts.
Your participation in class will be evaluated after we complete each Chapter of
the Textbook (Capitolo Preliminare and 4 first Chapters)), based on:
- coming to class on time every day;
- use of Italian in class (answering or asking questions);
- contributing to class activities;
- active participation in group work;
- volunteering in discussion;
- preparedness;
- attention.
Any disruptive or disrespectful behavior will result in a “0”
participation grade.
3.) Preparation for class:
You will prepare the part of the lesson to be taught the following day the
evening before class. Preparation includes:
- reading the pages in the Textbook (TB) related to the material that will
be introduced in class (see the Calendar);
- learning the new vocabulary;
- completing the assigned exercises from your on-line Workbook (WB) and
Lab Manual (LM) (see Quia).
Please, follow diligently the Calendar and Quia (on line), where all the
assignments are specified. I encourage you to meet regularly with your
classmates to study and practice your Italian aloud! You are expected to
spend at least 2 hours preparing for each class!
4.) Homework:
Total: 150 pts.
Your total grade for homework will consist of two parts:
A. Written exercises from your Workbook on-line (Quia)
– Total: 100 pts. (Cap. Prelim. + 4 Chapters)
You will be assigned several written exercises from the Workbook on-line
to be completed at home BEFORE CLASS (see Quia). Completing on time all
the homework assignments is essential to your success in this course. The
deadline for completing the exercises due a given day will be always
midnight of the day before. I will not be accepting any late homework.
B. Listening exercises from the Lab Manual on-line (Quia)
– Total: 50 pts. (Cap. Prelim. + 4 Chapters)
You are also required to complete all the Lab exercises from the Lab
Manual on-line. Again, it is important to do them when they are assigned
(see Quia). The deadline for completing the exercises related to the
material covered in class will be midnight before the following class.
The instructions on how to register for the on-line Workbook and Lab
Manual to accompany your Textbook “Prego”! will be available at the
beginning of the semester.
5.) Essays:
Total: 100 pts. (2 compositions x 50 pts. each).
Each composition will be evaluated in terms of vocabulary, grammar/usage,
content, and organization/style.
It should be at least 150 words (please, write the number of words in
parentheses next to your name).
You will be required to rewrite your essays after my corrections, which will
give you an opportunity to improve your grade. Please, check the Calendar for
the due dates for compositions and rewrites.
Only compositions printed from the computer or typed will be accepted. Please
double-space.
6.) Oral Skit:
Total: 50 pts.
Working in groups of 2-3, students will prepare a dramatic skit (3-4 minutes of
speaking for each student) on a topic chosen from a list that will be available
at the beginning of the semester. The Skit has to be MEMORIZED! No reading is
allowed.
The preparation of the skit will involve 4 steps:
1. After having discussed the topic with the Instructor, you will prepare the
script of the skit and hand it to me for the necessary corrections. Only a
printed or typed script will be accepted ( and please, double-space!)
2. You will rewrite the skit with the corrections.
3. You will schedule an appointment with the Instructor for practicing the
pronunciation.
4. Then, you will proceed to memorizing the dialogue.
You will be graded for two stages:
Preparation (25 pts): I will be grading the first version of your script – the
complexity of the situation, and the accurate use of target vocabulary and
grammatical structures.
Performance (25 pts): I will be grading individually your preparedness
(memorizing the dialogue), fluency, correctness, pronounciation, and also your
creativity (promps, costumes, etc.)
The list of topics will be furnished at the beginning of the semester.
Please follow the Calendar where the due dates for version 1 and version 2 of
your skit, and for your performance are specified.
7.) Quizes:
The “Capitolo Preliminare” of the textbook will be followed by a quiz (Quiz
“0”) which will allow you to evaluate your progress and your effort, as well as
prepare you for the following Chapter Exams.
Other quizes during the semester are possible, depending on the difficulty of
the material and on your results.
7.) Exams:
Total: 400 pts. (4 exams x 100 pts. each).
Chapter exams include sections on listening, vocabulary, grammar, a reading,
and a composition.
Students who miss an exam (only for a documented illness, a family crisis or a
university-sponsored activity) may take a make up-exam at the end of the
semester. Only one make-up exam is allowed!!!
8.) Oral Exam: 50 pts.
The oral exam will be conducted during an individual appointment with the
instructor in groups of 2-3 students. It will consist of answering and asking
questions, describing pictures, reading a text, and answering questions. The
grade will consider your competency in comprehension, the use of appropriate
vocabulary and grammar structures in your answers, your fluency, and your
pronunciation.
9.) Final Exam: 150 pts.
The Final Exam will be cumulative and cover all of the semester’s work.
It is scheduled for: Monday, December 4, 12:00
10.) Extra Credit: 10 pts.
Croft Cine World Film Series: Over the semester one Italian movie will be shown
for free on campus:
Turner Center Auditorium.
Students may earn extra credit by viewing the film and then writing in English
a summary and a critique. Your assignment needs to be typed.It has to be turned
in no later than one week after the film is shown.
11.) The points that you will be earning for all the activities during the
semester will be posted on BLACKBOARD. To pass the course you need to earn a
minimum of 595 pts. out of the total of 1000 pts. for the semester (or a
minimum of 60%). This also applies to every graded activity. I strongly
recommend that during the course of the semester you check regularly your
individual grades and your total score (which will appear in percentages) to
make sure you did not fall below the 60% minimum.
12.) Composition of final grades:
Participation: 100 pts.
Homework: 150 pts.
Essays: 100 pts. (2 x 50 pts.)
Oral Skit: 50 pts.
Exams: 400 pts. (4 x 100 pts.)
Oral exam: 50 pts.
Final exam: 150 pts.
TOTAL: 1000 pts.
13.) Final Grading scale:
From a total of 1000 pts., the following scale will be applied to determine the
student’s final grade:
A = 1000-895 B = 894-795 C = 794-695 D = 694-595
F = below 595.
14.) Students with learning problems are requested to contact me
before the beginning of classes for specific accommodations.
15.) Students are not allowed to receive or attempt to receive
assistance (including computer translators) in the preparation of
any assignments, exams, or compositions to be submitted for a
grade. The general University policy on cheating and plagiarism
is very specific, and includes severe penalties.
13.) You are encouraged to come and see me in my office to
discuss any problem and to ask for additional explanations in
English if you are having difficulty with understanding the new
material or with homework. DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK ME QUESTIONS! I
WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU!
