1    SECTION 01565 - UNDERGROUND UTILITIES

2    PART 1. GENERAL

3             A.        The Contractor shall refer to DIV-01500 – Safety and Health for additional information.

4    1.1      UTILITY IDENTIFICATION

5             A.        The Contractor shall mark all underground utilities installed by this project with trace wire,
6                       marking tape, signs and identification tags.

 7            B.        If more than one utility is installed in a trench, the Contractor shall install trace wire, marking
 8                      tape, signs and identification tags for each utility. If not provided for by design drawings and
 9                      specifications, the Contractor shall obtain approval from the Project Subcontract Technical
10                      Representative (PSTR) before installing more than one utility in a trench.

11            C.        The Contractor shall replace any trace wire, marking tape, signs or identification tags removed
12                      during the conduct of work.

13            D.        The Contractor shall repair or replace any trace wire, marking tape, signs or identification tags
14                      damaged during the conduct of work.

15   1.2      TRACE WIRE

16            A.        The Contractor shall install trace wires:

17                      1.       Beside and at centerline of utility.

18                      2.       Splices shall be marked with a line post.

19                      3.       The trace wire shall be electronically continuous from termination to termination.

20                      4.       Trace wire terminations are required at the beginning and end of the utility.
21                               Additional terminations shall be installed as required to achieve a maximum distance
22                               of 300 feet between terminations.

23                      5.       Trace wires shall be terminated in a weatherproof electrical junction box.

24                               a.        The box shall be located where the utility enters a building or attached to a
25                                         line marker post as appropriate.

26                               b.        An insulated banana plug shall be installed in a gasketed cover plate stamped
27                                         with the abbreviated name of the utility.

28                               c.        The trace wire shall be connected to the banana plug.

29            B.        The Contractor shall notify the PSTR upon completion of trace wire installation or repair.

30            C.        The trace wire shall not be covered before the installation has been approved by the PSTR.

1    1.3      IDENTIFICATION TAPE

2             A.        The Contractor shall install utility marking tape 12 inches below the surface in non-paved
3                       areas and just below the sub-base in paved areas.

4                       1.       The tape shall be installed with the printed side up.

5                       2.       Precautions shall be taken to ensure the tape is not pulled, distorted or otherwise
6                                misplaced when backfilling the trench.

7                       3.       The Contractor shall repair any marking tape associated with utilities that have been
8                                damaged during excavation.

 9            B.        The Contractor shall notify the PSTR upon completion of the marking tape installation or
10                      repair.

11            C.        The marking tape shall not be covered before the installation has been approved by the PSTR.

12   1.4      MARKER SIGNS

13            A.        Utility line marker signs and posts shall be located at:

14                      1.       Any bend of the utility line.

15                      2.       Each splice.

16                      3.       Each change in direction.

17                      4.       Each end of the utility (where applicable).

18                      5.       Intervals of 300 feet or less on straight runs (except when in roadways, parking lots,
19                               plowed fields, etc.).

20            B.        Utility marker signs and posts shall be placed 2 feet to the side of the utility with the sign
21                      reading from the utility side. The marker must be on the same side of the line for the full
22                      length of the utility run.

23            C.        Utility marker posts shall be embedded in concrete.

24   PART 2. PRODUCTS

25   2.1      UTILITY IDENTIFICATION

26            A.        Trace Wire - Trace wire shall be direct burial USE multi-strand single conductor #12 XHHW
27                      copper wire.

28            B.        Waterproof splices shall be made with splice kits approved by the conductor manufacturer or
29                      B&W Pantex.

1    2.2      UTILITY MARKING TAPE

2             A.          Utility marking tape shall be made of an inert plastic film (i.e. polyethylene plastic) that is
3                         impervious to alkalis, acids or chemicals likely to be encountered in soils.

4             B.          Utility marking tape shall be made a minimum of 6 inches wide and have a minimum
5                         thickness of 4 mil.

6             C.          Marking tape shall be color coded in accordance with the American Public Works Association
7                         Uniform Color Code as follows:

                   COLOR                       UTILITY
                   Green                       Sewer and drain lines.

                   Red                         Electrical power lines, cables, conduits and lighting cables.

                   Orange                      Communications alarm or signal lines, cables and conduit.

                   Blue                        Water, irrigation, or slurry lines.

                   Yellow                      Gas, oil, steam, petroleum or gaseous materials.

 8            D.          Marking tape identification printing shall be on one side in permanent black letters 1 inch high
 9                        and shall be repeated for the full length of the tape. The printing shall consist of words printed
10                        in two rows as follows:

12                                         BURIED (insert utility name) LINE BELOW

13   2.3      UTILITY LINE MARKER

14            A.          Utility line marker posts shall be produced from high strength "hat" channel.

15                        1.      The weight of each post before punching shall be 2.00 lbs/ft.

16                        2.      The posts shall be punched with .438 inch diameter holes on 1 inch centers its full
17                                length with the first and last holes a minimum of 1 inch from each end.

18                        3.      After fabrication, the post shall be galvanized to ASTM A128 or have a baked-on
19                                enamel finish.

20            B.          Utility line marker sign blanks shall measure 10 inches by 14 inches and be manufactured
21                        from 16 gage (minimum) aluminum or 20 gage (minimum) galvanized steel. The corners
22                        shall be rounded.

23            C.          Signs shall either be painted directly onto the metal blank or a preprinted plastic sign may be
24                        laminated to the metal blank.

25                        1.      The sign blank shall be prepared per manufacturer's recommendations prior to
26                                painting or lamination.

27                        2.      Signs shall be lettered and colored as shown on the attached detail.

1            D.        Utility marker signs shall be attached to the marker post with at least 2 bolts with lockwashers
2                      and nuts. The bolts, lockwashers and nuts must be galvanized per ASTM A128.

3            E.        Utility identification tags shall be made of brass and stamped with the following information:

4                      1.       Utility Type (i.e., WTR, SWR, CC, T, etc.).

5                      2.       Depth (inches).

6                      3.       Burial Description (i.e., direct burial, conduit, ductbank, steel pipe, etc.).

7                      4.       Date Installed.
