TEMAKI SUSHI!
Step 1:
You will need
1 sheet of nori (seaweed)
some sushi rice
some sesame seeds
some raw salmon or any preferred sushi grade fish/seafood
1 strip of avocado, cucumber or any preferred filling ingredients
Step 2:
Prepare the fillings
Ahead of time, lay out all your fish/seafood, vegetable fillings and sauces
Step 3:
Prepare the base
Before you start, dry your hands thoroughly. Any moisture will make the nori
soggy. Place the nori in the palm of one hand, and cover half with a thin layer of
rice. Dip your fingers in water first to make the sticky rice easier to handle.
Step 4:
Add the fillings
First, add a sprinkling of sesame seeds.
Then lay the seafood pieces on top in their cone shape.
Lastly, add the vegetables.
Step 5:
Rolling the Temaki
Carefully, bend your hand causing the Nori to fold in on itself. Tuck the end in
and roll the Nori up to make a cone shape. To keep the cone together take one
kernel of rice and squash it into the corner. This will stick the end down, holding
the Nori in position.
Eat the Temaki as soon as it is prepared, when the Nori is still crisp – the crisper it
is, the better.
INTRO TO SUSHI!
Rolled sushi or "maki-sushi" is prepared by using roasted seaweed and rice to
roll a wide variety of ingredients. Rice is layered on the nori and ingredients are
added. The seaweed and rice are rolled to enclose the seafood and other
ingredients. Sushi rolls are generally prepared in three forms.
The large roll or maki-sushi uses a whole piece of nori.
The inside-out roll or Kawari-maki-sushi uses a half sheet of nori and is
prepared with the rice on the outside of the roll.
The small roll or Hoso-maki-sushi is prepared with a half sheet of nori
and generally one ingredient.
The following abbreviations are used for the sushi roll suggestions:
