UK residents’ sterling deposits increased by £24.3bn (nsa) in Q1 2004, with deposits from individuals rising by

£7.5bn. Deposits from other financial corporations increased by £10.1bn, driven by other auxiliary activities

(+£7.7bn), securities dealers (+£2.2bn), and bank holding companies (+£1.8bn), with a partially offsetting

movement coming from other financial intermediaries (-£1.7bn). Deposits from non-financial corporations

increased by £6.7bn. This was driven by companies involved in legal, accountancy and other business services

(+£4.5bn), in public administration and defence (+£3.4bn) and in recreational, personal, and community service

activities (+£0.8bn). The moves were partially offset by a reduction in deposits from retail trade and repair

excluding motor vehicles and cycles (-£2.2bn).

Sterling lending to UK residents increased by £25.0bn (nsa) in Q1 2004. Lending to individuals increased by

£10.3bn, of which £8.0bn was secured on dwellings including bridging finance. Lending to other financial

corporations rose by £10.2bn, driven by a rise of £9.0bn in lending to other auxiliary activities, and of £2.7bn to

securities dealers. Lending to firms involved in fund management activities also increased (+£2.5bn), with these

rises partially offset by a reduction in lending to other financial intermediaries (-£3.2bn) and to financial leasing

corporations (-£2.2bn). Lending to non-financial corporations rose by £4.4bn, with large movements from the

development, buying and selling of real estate (+£4.7bn) and construction (+£1.6bn). These were partially offset

by a £5.5bn repayment from transport, storage and communication. Lending to manufacturing increased by

£0.6bn, the first quarterly increase since Q3 2001.

1

The breakdowns for individuals, other financial corporations, and non-financial corporations only list the main changes and therefore do not sum to the

total.

2

Lending to individuals was reduced in the quarter to end-March 2004 by the net transfer (comprising securitisations, acquisitions and disposals) out of the

banking sector of £8.4bn of secured lending and £1.2bn of unsecured lending.

Foreign currency deposits increased by £20.8bn in Q1 2004. Deposits from other financial corporations

represented the vast majority of this, contributing a rise of £20.6bn. Within this category, deposits from securities

dealers (+£9.7bn), other auxiliary activities (+£4.7bn) and other financial intermediaries (+£4.6bn) were the

main drivers. Deposits from non-financial corporations fell by £0.3bn, with a £1.1bn increase from mining and

quarrying more than offset by falls from manufacturing (-£0.8bn), computer and related activities (-£0.4bn) and

transport, storage and communication (-£0.3bn).

Foreign currency lending also increased substantially in Q1 2004, rising by £40.5bn. Lending to other financial

corporations was again the main component, rising by £42.5bn. Within the category, lending to securities

dealers (+£24.5bn), and to other auxiliary activities (+£11.4bn) were dominant, with a £3.1bn increase also going

to firms involved with fund management activities. Lending to non-financial corporations offset the rise

slightly, falling by £2.0bn. Firms involved with transport, storage and communication repaid £0.8bn, with

public administration and defence (-£0.3bn) and the development, buying and selling of real estate (-£0.2bn) also

reducing their borrowing.

Notes to Editors

1 The industrial analysis of deposits and lending is attached, in the form of tables C, D and E. These data enhance certain

aspects of the monetary, financial and balance sheet data published monthly, last released on 4 May. The latter include

building society and Bank of England lending and deposits data, with analysis by broad economic sector, a monthly series of

all-lenders' lending secured on dwellings and consumer credit, and capital issues split by sector. A monthly industrial

analysis of lending data, for the ‘Major British Banking Groups’ only, was last published by the British Bankers’

Association on 22 April. This release presents time series which bridge the breaks between the previous lending analysis

and the new one.

2 The full industrial analysis of lending is not seasonally adjusted because of the breaks in series that occurred in 1992 (a

shift from reporting at the end of the second month of each quarter) and in 1997 (the change to SIC 92). However,

seasonally adjusted series for the condensed version of the industrial analysis of lending, which bridged the break in series

in 1997, are attached to this release as Table E, and also published in Table C1.3 of Bank of England: Monetary and

Financial Statistics. The industrial analysis of deposits is a newer series and therefore is not currently seasonally adjusted

due to the shorter run of data available.

3 The analysis of lending covers loans, advances (including lending under reverse repos), finance leasing, acceptances and

facilities (in both sterling and other currencies) and holdings of sterling and euro commercial paper issued by UK residents,

provided by reporting banks (from Q2 1998, excluding the Bank of England) to their UK resident non-bank and non-

building society customers. The industrial analysis of deposits (including under repo) is also attached. The industrial

analysis of deposits and lending also appears in Tables 4.5A to 4.5C of the ONS’s Financial Statistics.

4 These technical notes amplify the notes and definitions to Tables C1.1, C1.2 and C1.3, which appear in the publication

Bank of England: Monetary and Financial Statistics.

5 In these statistics, lending flows are adjusted to remove potential distortions caused by revaluations (e.g. write-offs)

where known. However some write-offs cannot be attributed to industrial categories. Total lending flows are the sum of the

component parts and do not therefore include adjustments which cannot be attributed to specific categories. The individual

categories that have been adjusted for write-offs in 2004 Q1 are lending secured on dwellings (+£26mn) and consumer

credit (+£849mn).

6 The following revisions refer to data previously published which has been revised by more than £0.3bn or 5% of the

level in each category.

7 Deposits placed by fund managers on behalf of other UK residents are not reported on the same basis as lending to fund

managers on behalf of other UK residents. Where the ultimate beneficiary of the lending is identifiable, banks are asked to

classify their loans accordingly. However, deposits are classified as being placed by fund managers, with information about

the ultimate depositor being provided as a footnote to Table C.

8 Euro-denominated deposits, lending and facilities data are included indistinguishably in the totals outstanding and

changes in other currencies in Tables C and D, but are available on request. Similarly, deposits and lending data in sterling,

euro and other currencies analysed by nationality of ultimate ownership of the individual banks can also be made available

on request.
