Code of Conduct
and
School Rules

secure, friendly and supportive
school environment’
INTRODUCTION
At Turriff Academy, every effort will be made to enable all pupils to
benefit fully from their education and to achieve their potential. This can
best be achieved when we have a code of conduct and a set of school
rules to support the statement of values described below that are upheld
by all members of the school community.
STATEMENT OF VALUES
As a pupil of Turriff Academy, I will:
show that I value learning by working hard and always doing my best
show respect for school staff and visitors to the school by being polite
and helpful in my dealings with them
show respect for my fellow pupils by valuing everyone as a unique
and worthwhile person
care for the school and local environment by keeping it safe, orderly
and free from mess or damage
adhere to the school‟s expectations of Good Citizenship
follow the agreed classroom rules to enable effective learning to take
place
follow the agreed school rules that will enable these values to be
attained
SCHOOL RULES
The School Rules describe the responsibilities placed on pupils at
Turriff Academy to conduct themselves within and around the school
buildings and grounds, and on their way to and from school, in a way that
enables everyone to enjoy the secure, friendly and supportive
environment to which they are entitled.
a) Good Citizenship
As a pupil of Turriff Academy, I will:
attend school regularly and arrive punctually
uphold the good name of the school in public through my actions and
manner
follow the school‟s Dress Code at all times
treat others as I would like to be treated myself
accept and value that people are different
listen to reasonable and fair instructions given to me by all members
of staff and carry them out without question
avoid confrontation or aggressive behaviour
avoid behaviour or actions which could be dangerous, provocative or
cause offence to others
treat property and our environment with care
avoid smoking in or around the school grounds, or have cigarettes,
matches or lighters in my possession
ensure that my mobile phone/ MP3 player/ Apple iPod is switched off
and out of sight during class lessons, in the Library and at assemblies.
Teaching staff may on occasion, at their discretion, allow the use of
MP3 players / Apple iPods, or the playing of music in class.
b) Movement
These rules, which relate to movement in and out of, and within the
school building, are made to ensure the safety of pupils and to help
create order.
Turriff Academy pupils will not
leave or enter the building by the security doors during the school day
(ie between 8.40am and 3.50 pm)
leave the building during the school day without permission (other
than class 6 and without signing out
access their lockers during class periods or at change of period times
enter a classroom without the teacher‟s permission
In corridors and on stairs, Turriff Academy pupils will
keep to the left and not run, push or indulge in anti-social behaviour
not loiter or congregate in groups
At interval and lunchtime, Turriff Academy pupils
are restricted to the ground floor (level A) and first floor (level B) only,
unless they are attending a club or activity elsewhere; or, they are
using the designated seating are in the Business Studies/Technical
Education corridor on level C
must keep to the pavements, and not walk or loiter on the roads when
outside the school grounds
c) Seating Areas
These may be used by pupils at interval and lunchtime for quiet
relaxation, provided there is no anti-social behaviour and they are
kept litter free.

B1 is reserved for first year pupils only
all other areas may be used by pupils from any year group
d) Use of the School Grounds
Ball games are permitted, but only if the authorised type of ball is
used
The school grounds should be kept free of litter
Snowballing is not permitted within, or around, the school grounds
e) Schoolbags
Schoolbags must be left only in designated areas (that is, period 5/6
classrooms, lockers, the cloak areas)
f) Out of Bounds
The staff car park is out of bounds to pupils
Locker areas are out of bounds to pupils other than to those pupils
accessing their lockers
g) Consumption of Food and Drink
These rules, which relate to the consumption of food and drink,
especially at interval and lunchtime, are made to ensure we meet
health & safety requirements and to keep the building clean and
tidy.
During the morning and lunchtime intervals:
take-away food and soft drinks may only be consumed in the
canteen or playground areas
take-away food and soft drinks must not be taken above the ground
floor
while it is permitted to eat crisps and sweets in the designated seating
areas, on no account should take-away food or drinks be consumed in
these areas
eating or drinking is forbidden in corridors and classrooms (including
the School Library)
It is permitted to drink plain, still water anywhere in the building, and at
any time during the school day, subject to any Health and Safety
restrictions
h) Travelling on school buses
Turriff Academy pupils are expected to:
follow the school‟s Code of Conduct while travelling on school buses
show due consideration for their fellow passengers
do nothing which may distract the driver
follow all reasonable instructions given by the driver
CLASSROOM CODE
The classroom code aims to help pupils to become responsible learners
and to create a classroom environment that is calm, supportive and
productive. This will enable both teachers and learners to operate
effectively.
To achieve this, all pupils are expected to follow this code:
Be on time for each lesson
Be prepared for each lesson
Follow instructions the first time they are given
Try hard to achieve your maximum
Have respect for yourself and others
Act in a safe and responsible manner at all times
This will allow all pupils to give their very best attention to their work and
to achieve the highest possible standards.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE
Turriff Academy pupils are expected to follow the agreed School Dress Code.
The School Dress Code was agreed by parents and pupils.
It aims to promote a smart, casual look, and is therefore predominantly dark colours.
You support the School Dress Code by wearing clothing and footwear described below.

Notes of Clarification:
1. School Sweatshirts and Polo Shirts are available from “Deveron Sports” in Turriff.
(A full range of other clothing and footwear the meets the School Dress Code is available from
“Celebrations”, “Deveron Sports” and “K.J‟s”).
2. Logos should be no bigger than the school logo that appears on official items.
3. Clothing not described above does not form part of the dress code and should not be worn
to school. This would include: blue denim jeans and jackets, sports hooded tops („hoodies‟),
striped tops, low-cut tops, „crop tops‟, leatherwear, shell suits, tracksuits and football replica kits.
Flip flops must not be worn to school for health and safety reasons.
If in doubt, please check with the school.
Samples of suitable clothing are displayed on notice boards in the school‟s main corridor.
4. For Outdoors: an outdoor jacket or coat; preferably in a dark colour.
5. For Special Occasions: a white shirt or blouse, along with an official school tie (which may be
purchased from the School Office).
Additional Rules relating to Dress
1. Hats and caps must not be worn inside the school building.
2. Normally, pupils would be expected to remove scarves and outdoor anoraks, jackets and coats in
the classroom.
