Medina Chess Club
The Medina Chess Club 2010-2011 season starts soon!
The Medina Chess Club, one of the largest in the area, is headed by nationally-known
coach Dr. Leo Stefurak. Coach Leo has lead many students and teams around the
Seattle area to state and national championships, including our Medina Tigers! While
some of our students compete at this level, many join the club simply for fun and to
engage with other students in this stimulating game. Studies show that students that
play the game of chess improve across academic disciplines, develop logical thinking
skills, and become more creative problem-solvers.
The Club will begin meeting right after school on Wednesday, September 15th. We
have seven classes, all lead by stellar coaches from the area, including two classes just
for girls and a separate class just for kindergarteners.
Click HERE for registration information, or look for the Chess Club registration
packet in the school office and mark your calendars for our annual Family Chess Night,
Tuesday, September 14th, from 6:30-8:00 pm in the gym.

Grants Committee
Grants Committee Looking for Volunteers
Medina PTA has a grant program to encourage innovative ideas and projects that
enhance and expand student learning. Teachers and staff are invited to submit grant
requests in two cycles -- one in October and one in Feb/Mar. During each cycle, the
grant committee accepts applications, reviews the grant requests and then meets one
time (typically, only one meeting is needed) to decide which grants to fund.
Meetings could be morning, lunch or evening depending on what works best for the
group. This is a great way to get involved and learn more about how PTA dollars
benefit Medina students.
If you are interested, please email Kristen Edelhertz, Grants Chair.
Garden Club
Do you love gardening? And hopefully have a green thumb? We are looking for a
parent (or 2!) to start up a Garden Club at Medina Elementary. Our school has a
great Pea Patch behind the cafeteria that needs tending to - a perfect job for kids at
recess once a week.
Please email Laura Weingaertner or Debbie Scott if you are interested.
Safeway 10% Back Program
Do you shop at Safeway? If so you can help Medina earn money back simply by
shopping there! Program runs September 18 - October 13.
Check your receipt for details throughout the program. Your total will be updated every
shopping trip. For three weeks starting on September 18th a redemption code will be
printed at the bottom of your receipt.
Visit their site (linke below) before October 13th to select Medina Elementary to get
10% of your total. Then simply enter your redemption code to make your donation.
You can also give the bottom of your receipt (with the redemption code) directly to us
by leaving it in the marked envelope in the office.
CLICK HERE for Safeway's 10% Back Program
Box Tops for Education
Start collecting those Box Tops! Medina will be participating in the Box Tops for
Education program. We all shop for groceries - now we can help our school earn
money by simply looking for the Box Top logos on hundreds of products. All you need
to do is start saving them to help your class win a special prize! Look for more
program details in next week's Byte. Contact Lynn Janata if you have questions.
