Title: The main Idea
Time: 40 minutes
Standard: write a summary to demonstrate understanding of literary works to include main idea
and significant details.
Objective: TSW be able to identify the main idea and significant details of a story or chapter in a
book.
Materials: Live writing by Ralph Fletcher
Young Adult Novel
Pencil and paper
Environment: TSW start at his or her seat as a whole class.
TSW then go to their assigned group on the floor.
TSW then go back to their seat for a whole class discussion.
Procedure: TTW introduce the concept of main idea and supporting details to the class.
TTW ask the students what they know about main idea and supporting details.
TTW generate a chart with the students relating to ch 12 of Ralph Fletcher in
determining how to find the main idea and supporting details.
TTW break the children into small groups and give each of them a chapter from the
young adult novel.
TSW read the chapter with their group and summarize the supporting details leading
to the main idea following the tips given from Fletcher.
TCW come back together from discussion on the main idea and supporting details of
their chapter.
Assessment: TSW be assessed on their summary of the main idea and the supporting details of
their chapter.
Modifications: TSW be paired with strong and not as strong readers to ensure the completion of
their chapter.
TSW be able to make themselves comfortable in a relaxed floor setting for the
reading portion.
Behavior Management: TTW circulate the room to ensure appropriate behavior.
TTW use 1 on 1 conferences at the end of the day for inappropriate
behavior.
