Dear Kindergarten Parent:
The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 (Transitional Kindergarten) has enacted a historic reform to help ensure that
California children are better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. One aspect of this legislation amends
the state Education Code relating to kindergarten to create a “transitional kindergarten”, the first year of a two-year
kindergarten experience for students born between September and December. This gives four-year-olds with fall
birthdays an additional year of preparation before entering kindergarten.
Transitional Kindergarten provides a researched based and developmentally appropriate kindergarten program that
addresses the children’s language, literacy, and pre-math skills with an emphasis on social and emotional development
in a quality educational setting and with a credentialed teacher.
On May 5, 2011, The Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously to open one transitional
kindergarten class to be held at the Beverly Vista school site. This voluntary program will be offered to eligible students
with birthdays between September 2 and December 2, 2006 and who are registered at their home school for
kindergarten (Fall 2011-2012).
For planning purposes, we request that you complete the information form included in this mailing and return it (mail or
school office) as quickly as possible. Students will be given priority for enrollment in the transitional kindergarten class
based on the month of their birthday based on age and receipt of a commitment letter by the designated deadline
(Wednesday, June 15). Spaces are limited and a waiting list will be generated should the number of interested eligible
students surpass the class size.
Please read the FAQ from the State of California Department of Education regarding transitional kindergarten to assist
you in making this decision at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/em/kinderfaq.asp. Additional information specifically related
to the Beverly Hills Unified School District transitional kindergarten program will be available in the upcoming weeks.
You know your child the best and will ultimately decide if transitional kindergarten makes sense for him/her. We look
forward to your decision and the opportunity to welcome your child as they begin their educational experience with the
Beverly Hills Unified School District. For additional information and questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
