Message from the Event Chairman
It is my great honor to serve as the Gala Chairman for the "Outstanding 50 Asian
Americans in Business" award dinner for the 4th consecutive year. The event has
become the largest and most prestigious business award program in the Asian
American community. In addition, corporations have found the "Outstanding 50"
program to be an important business networking event.With over 700 people in
attendance tonight, I surely hope you have brought your business cards!
As you read through the bios, you will be proud of the accomplishments made by
our awardees.We are especially honored tonight to present Nusrat Durrani of
MTV World with this year's Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle Award is given to
James Wohn exceptional people who have reached the apex of their respective business are-
Chairman nas. Mr. Durrani is more than deserving of this high distinction. Mr. Durrani and
our other awardees are not only model representatives of the Asian American
Dinner Committee community, but they are also great Americans.
We received an overwhelming number of high-quality nominations this year, and
were truly inspired by all the nominees' stories. In addition, we are pleased with
the diversity of the awardees. Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean,Thai are
all proudly represented in our Outstanding 50.
Tonight's event is the culmination of the efforts of many individuals. I thank John
Wang, President of AABDC, Fusia Communications, and our Planning Committee
members and volunteers for their "hands-on" approach to successfully organizing
this wonderful program. Our corporate sponsors, including Aetna, Allianz Life,

Message from AABDC
It is with great excitement and awe that I extend my congratulations to
the recipients of the 2007 "Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business"
award and the "Pinnacle Award." My heartfelt thanks to the many individu-
als and our corporate sponsors that have made this event possible
through their generous support.
Since its inception in 2001, AABDC has dedicated its efforts to promoting
and strengthening Asian American's voice in the mainstream market, high-
lighting their achievements and contributions to the general economy.
John Wang Tonight's diverse and multi-talented honorees are perfect examples of
President Asian American success stories in a wide range of businesses.
AABDC We believe that Asian American executives, with their multi-cultural back-
ground and entrepreneurial drive, are the key to helping multi-national
corporations stay competitive in the world economy. We champion the
inclusion of Asian American entrepreneurs in public policy discussion and
encourage their participation in all levels of government procurement pro-
The embodiment of Asian American aspirations has no better representa-
tion than tonight's keynote speaker, Elaine Cho, the United States
Secretary of Labor, a national leader and a role model for us all. I am
grateful for her presence to support and recognize the outstanding
accomplishments of tonight's award recipients.
Elaine L. Chao is the nation's 24th Secretary of Labor and the first Asian
American woman appointed to a President's Cabinet in U.S. history. Arriving at
the age of eight from Asia speaking no English, Secretary Chao's experience tran-
sitioning to a new country inspired her to dedicate most of her professional life
to ensuring that people have the chance to build better lives and the opportunity
to achieve financial
Under Secretary Chao's leadership, the Department of Labor has launched a
number of initiatives to help traditionally underserved communities, such as the
Elaine Chao Asian American community, access opportunity in mainstream America. In 2006,
US Secretary of Labor the Department recovered nearly $172 million for over 246,000 workers who
did not receive the wages they were due. Many of these workers were vulnera-
ble immigrants employed in
low wage industries. Secretary Chao also initiated the annual Asian Pacific
American Federal Career Advancement Summit and the annual Opportunity
Conference specifically designed to help underserved communities access greater
opportunities in mainstream America. And for the first time ever, in 2002, the
Bureau of Labor Statistics reported monthly employment data on Asian
Americans in a separate, independent category. The Department has also trans-
lated numerous labor law materials into multiple languages,
including Chinese,Vietnamese and Korean.
Secretary Chao's career has spanned the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
As President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of America, she restored
public trust and confidence in one of the nation's largest institutions of private
charitable giving after it was tarnished by mismanagement and financial abuse.
As Director of the Peace Corps, she established the first Peace Corps programs
in the Baltic nations and the
newly independent states of the former Soviet Union.
She was also the Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation and
Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. She has also worked in the pri-
vate sector as Vice President of Syndications at BankAmerica Capital Markets
Group and a banker with Citicorp. Prior to her appointment as Secretary of
Labor, she was a Distinguished Fellow with the Heritage Foundation.
Secretary Chao received her M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and her
undergraduate degree in economics from Mount Holyoke College. She is the
recipient of 29 honorary doctoral degrees.
Mistress of Ceremonies
Cindy Hsu is an Emmy Award winning anchor and reporter who has been
at CBS 2 News in New York City since 1993. She also hosts and produces
"Family First," a regular series in the 5pm news featuring advice for par-
ents on a wide range of topics.
Ms. Hsu's work at CBS 2 has been recognized with numerous awards.
Most recently, her personal adoption story, "Bringing Rosie Home," was
nominated for an Emmy Award and won the New York AP Broadcasters
Award for Best Feature. She received Emmy Awards for Outstanding
Cindy Hsu Single Hard News Story for "Smuggled from China," which exposed the
News Anchor horrific plights of Chinese refugees from the Golden Venture ship, and for
her live coverage of the snowstorm of 1994. American Women in Radio
WCBS-TV and Television honored her with the Golden Apple Award, and she also
received the Friends of Adoption Award from the Adoptive Parents
Prior to joining WCBS-TV, Ms. Hsu worked as a reporter and anchor at
WFRV-TV in Green Bay,Wisconsin, and for WTOV-TV in Steubenville,
Ohio. She began her broadcasting career as an associate producer for
WTVR-TV in Richmond,Virginia.
Ms. Hsu spends much of her off-duty time performing community work
and is strongly involved with the Asian-American community. She was
born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Coast Guard family that moved every two
to four years. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in communi-
cation studies and lives in New York City with her daughter.
Nusrat Durrani is the Senior Vice President and General Manager of MTV World, a divi-
sion of MTV created to launch new MTV-branded channels that serve emerging audiences
in the US.
At MTV, Mr. Durrani was a key player on the team that launched mtv.com and hasworked
in various senior positions ever since, . As the Director of Business Development and
Operations, and later,Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, he was at the forefront of the
Digital Media Revolution the first time around. He negotiated and managed some of the
biggest deals cut by MTV at the time, bringing in over $50 million in revenue and creating a
template for new media/old media deal-making. He also laid the foundation for e-com-
merce on MTV,VHI, CMT, and Comedy Central, now a multimillion dollar operation.
Senior Vice President & The one thing that bothered Mr. Durrani at MTV was the absence of programming specifi-
General Manager cally aimed at smaller, emerging audiences in the US, like the 13 million Asian Americans,
who are the most affluent, educated and technology savvy group in the country. So in
2003, he worked with the business development team and started researching feasibility.
MTV World He was not surprised to find that young people born to immigrant parents felt ignored by
the media and were hungry for channels that reflected their bicultural identity. Mr.
Durrani and his team worked the phones and crunched numbers at night to prepare a
business plan for MTV to launch 4 new channels in the US aimed at bicultural young peo-
ple.The project was green lit in 2004 and Mr. Durrani was announced as General Manager
and SVP for a new division of the company called MTV World.
MTV Desi, MTV Chi and MTV K, aimed respectively at young South Asian, Chinese and
Korean audiences, were launched by Mr. Durrani and his team in the past two years.This
historic project is a first of its kind in the US, and has been widely acclaimed with lead sto-
ries in the New York Times,Time Magazine, Business Week, and other leading outlets. He is
currently engaged in expanding the presence of these brands on broadband and working
on a bigger, global pop culture initiative.
Mr. Durrani remains a man with many involvements. He has been Chairman of the MTV
Networks Diversity Council, and a mentor to a new generation of dreamers at the com-
pany. Prior to his 10-year stint at MTV, he worked for UPTRON, a leading electronics
company in New Delhi after earning his MBA from The University of Lucknow, India. In
1990, he moved to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, where he led the Marketing func-
tion for Honda Motor Cars, helping it become the second largest auto brand.
Mr. Durrani is also a video director, photographer, writer, and an evangelist of Asian pop
culture. He is married to Afshan, a fashion designer, and they have one daughter.
Jamie Ahn’s first spa venture, a beautifully-fashioned urban day spa retreat
right in the middle of New York City's Union Square, has become a desti-
nation for the ultimate spa experience. Ms. Ahn’s careful development of a
caring team of Acqua therapists and a unique menu of inspired spa treat-
ments has made her a visionary in the Manhattan spa scene. Today,
Townhouse incorporates internationally-influenced spa treatments, holistic
ingredients, and scientific breakthroughs.
Ms. Ahn's financial acumen, creative ideas and spa background (learning the
business from her mother, Esther Ahn, who owned several spas) have
helped turn her dream of operating one of the best spas in New York into
a reality. Ms. Ahn's hopes, dreams and aspirations include expanding her
spa vision with international spas, and developing her own line of branded
Jamie Ahn skin care and cosmetics. She also hopes to launch fitness videos and nutri-

Darshan Singh Bagga started Darshan Singh Bagga, LLC, a real estate
investment and development company, in 1981 after working as an electri-
cal engineer for several consulting engineering firms.
Mr. Bagga has taken on several unique development projects, such as Bagga
Tower, in which he built a nine-story apartment complex above an existing
one-story shopping center, Bagga Plaza, while it was still in operation. Mr.
Bagga has been honored with several awards throughout the years for
services in the Indian community of the US as an outstanding business-
man, community leader, and real estate developer and investor.
Mr. Bagga immigrated to the United States in January 1970 after earning
Darshan Bagga his Bachelor's Degree.Without the support and vision of his beautiful
President wife, Lovlin Kaur, he could not be where he is today.They have two sons
and a lovely daughter.
Darshan Singh Bagga, LLC
Sanjay Bose, General Manager for Protective Systems Testing at Con Edison, is
responsible for all relay protection, supervisory control, and data acquisition sys-
tems in over 94 substations.
Mr. Bose joined Con Edison in 1986. Over the past 20 years, he has been success-
ful in initiating numerous R&D projects to develop and implement one of kind
systems to improve processes, reduce costs, and increase electrical system relia-
bility. He also plays an active role in employee development by being a member
of the GOLD program committee and internally providing personal guidance to
numerous GOLD graduates to excel and become subject matter experts. All of
them are highly regarded by the company's executives and are invaluable assets to
Sanjay Bose Mr. Bose received a Bachelor's Degree in Power Electrical Engineering from the
General Manager, Protective Birla Institute of Technology in India in 1985.
Theresa Chang is the President of Citizens for Quality Care Assisted Living
Homes, a 24-hour assisted living homes company. She has managed to grow her
business from one small care home in 1993 to three large assisted living homes in
1999. As the President of CQC, she is responsible for overseeing all aspects of
management, strategic planning, and profitability. As one of the largest care
providers in the local area, Ms. Chang provides superb professional resources,
excellent leadership, and numerous contributions in the healthcare industry.
Armed with Nursing and Healthcare Administration degrees, she provides unique
services to senior citizens and their family members.
As an Asian American, Ms. Chang is always willing to promote her heritage. Over
the past years, she has also received various business awards and has been invited
as a guest speaker on several occasions. She will be finishing her Doctoral study

James Chao is the Chairman of Foremost Group, which has interests in shipping,
trading, and finance. Born in Shanghai, China, Mr. Chao has dedicated his entire
life to shipping, trading and financing. From the beginning of his career in shipping,
he has advanced through the ranks to become one of the youngest ocean-going
marine masters up to this time. In 1958, he was sponsored by the government for
advanced studies in the US. Mr. Chao then founded Foremost Maritime
Corporation in 1964 and developed it to the current Foremost Group.
Mr. Chao is a frequent lecturer on international shipping. He has received numer-
ous awards for his professional accomplishments and community service.
Additionally, he has served as a board member of various multinational corpora-
tions. He is also a committed volunteer and supporter of higher education.
James Chao Residing in Harrison, New York since 1974, Mr. Chao is married to Ruth Chao.

Kenneth Chung oversees a professional staff force of 25 individuals and is in
charge of direct profit and loss responsibility for a department that generates
$215,000,000 in annual revenue. Mr. Chung began his insurance career in the
early 1980's in Hong Kong. He is an excellent performer whose contribution to
Chubb can be measured in numerous ways. From a financial standpoint, he and his
team have produced approximately $175,000.00 in underwriting profit during his
Mr. Chung has been actively involved in the personal development of all of his
senior staff, several of whom have been promoted into positions of increased
responsibility. He had also established the Asian American Business Network
employee resource group at Chubb which provides networking opportunities for
Asian American employees who share the same cultural background. Other than
Kenneth Chung his defined role at Chubb, he constantly seeks out opportunities to expand his
Northeast Zone influence and increase his contribution, both to Chubb as well as to Asian
Manager For Americans.
Kenneth earned his MBA from Boston University. He is also an Associate of the
Chartered Insurance Institute and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter.
Dae Chung started his business in 1996 in the garage of his rented home. He
grew his business to where it is today a 7,000 sq. ft. location in Port Washington,
Upon immigrating to the US in 1976, Mr. Chung immediately started working in a
garment district factory. After a year, he started attending college to pursue a
degree in graphic design.To help support his family, he dropped out of college to
work full time. In 1983, he started his first business, a grocery store in Garden
City, New York, at the age of 27. He sold the business four years later and moved
to Chicago to help his brother-in-law's new copier sales and repair business.
Since his family could not cope with the weather, however, they moved back to
New York. Mr.Chung then started working as a copier technician on Long Island.
Dae Chung After seven years, he was able to launch his own copier sales and repair business,
President D Copier & Laser Tek, in the garage of his rented home. In 1996, he hired his
first employee and moved the business to the busy East Shore Road in
DTEKS Business Systems, Manhasset, New York. Seven years later, he hired a full-time CFO. The company
Inc. has a total of 9 employees.
Mr. Chung is grateful for the continued success of DTEKS. He lives in Great
Neck, New York with his wife,Young Soon, and his three daughters.
Guang-Nan Fanjiang has been in his current position with Weidlinger since
1989. Mr. Fanjiang's outstanding leadership and prominence in complex
bridge engineering have contributed significantly to the firm's success. Since
joining Weidlinger, Mr. Fanjiang has risen to become the Managing Director of
the firm's prominent bridge engineering practice, as well as suspension and
long-span bridges. In 2002, Mr. Fanjiang received an Outstanding Achievement
Award in Bridge Engineering from the International Chinese Transportation
Mr. Fanjiang serves on Weidlinger's Board of Directors. In this capacity, and as
a partial owner of the firm, he has had a significant influence in expanding the
firm's complex bridge engineering practice in California, Florida, and New
Guang-Nan Fanjiang Jersey. Since the mid-1990's he has tripled the firm's business in bridge design
Principal and construction. Currently, he manages a staff of 70 bridge engineering pro-
fessionals, working on more than 50 active projects in North America,
Weidlinger Associates, amounting to billions of dollars in construction costs.
Mr. Fanjiang received his BSCE from the Taipei Institute of Technology in 1965
and his MSCE from Kansas State University in 1971.
Lily Fong joined Allianz Life as the Director of Multicultural Markets with
the Asian segment focus. Prior to joining Allianz, Ms. Fong was the
Multicultural Business Development Officer with New England Financial
(NEF). Her position required her to develop and recruit ethnic agents to
capture new markets for NEF. She surpassed corporate diversity recruit-
ing objectives of managers and financial representatives by more than 20%
during her tenure with the company.
Examples of her past accomplishments include, the first Sino-American
Joint Venture (contract value $500M), and three additional large offshore
contracts, for Fluor Daniel in China. She has also been involved in partner-
ing contracts for over 5,200 hotels in 85 countries for AT&T, and promot-
ing home ownership for minority segments that have became major parts
of the business of GMAC Residential.
Allianz Life Lily came to the US in 1987 to obtain her advanced degree. She graduated
Summa Cum Laude from Monmouth University in 1991, and continued
her studies there to obtain her MBA in 1993.
Robyn Frisch is the President of ROCHEM International, Inc., an importer of
chemical, nutritional, and pharmaceutical raw materials of Chinese origin.
ROCHEM's initial success and sustained growth are the result of Ms. Frisch's
many years of experience in one of China's largest state-owned import and
export chemical companies. ROCHEM has grown to become a leading distributor
of pharmaceuticals ingredients, amino acids, vitamins, sweeteners, chemicals, bev-
erages, and sports ingredients. ROCHEM is well respected and focused on serv-
icing customers, while maintaining strong personal and business relationships with
leading manufacturers in China. It is this unique relationship that is the corner-
stone of ROCHEM's success.
After graduating in 1984 with a degree in English Literature, Ms. Frisch joined one
of the largest import and export trading companies in China handling chemical

exposed to the international business world. By the age of 24, she became the
ROCHEM International, youngest manager in the entire foreign trade industry of Sinochem Yantai. After
Inc. four years, she started ROCHEM in a small office in her home. Eight years
later, she was able to move the business to its current headquarters and
warehousing building located in Ronkonkoma, New York.
Karen Fukuma has worldwide responsibility for the marketing and business
line management of IBM's production solutions, which includes software, serv-
ices and maintenance and supplies business. Prior to her current assignment,
Ms. Fukuma was the Vice President of Finance at Printing Systems. She was
responsible for profit and loss management and worldwide planning for
Printing Systems. Previously, Ms. Fukuma was the Chief Financial Officer for
Lotus Development Corporation. In this capacity, she had responsibility for
business development, real estate, business controls and controller/treasury.
She held a seat on the Operating Committee, which was the key decision
making board for Lotus Development.
Currently, Ms. Fukuma serves as the Co-Chair of the Asian Taskforce and
Karen Fukuma IBM's Multicultural Women's group. She is also a member of the Global
VP, Worldwide Integrated Women's steering committee representing the Asian constituency. Ms.
Fukuma holds a BS in Accounting from Colorado State University and an
MBA in Finance from Regis University. She is also a Certified Management
Accountant. She is active in mentoring programs for both women and Asian
professionals across IBM.
Sandeep Gupta is a Principal in the assurance and advisory practice of
Deloitte & Touche in New York. He has over 14 years of experience serv-
ing the financial services industry. His experience crosses a wide range of
industries in the financial services sector, including broker dealers, banks,
and private equity and investment companies. He serves both domestic
and global clients and specializes in performing reviews of risk manage-
ment, trading, and regulatory and operations areas. Prior to his move to
New York, he worked in Deloitte's offices in Toronto, Canada and Abu
Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates and at an accounting firm in Mumbai,
Sandeep serves as the President of the Metro New York chapter of the
Sandeep Gupta National Asian American Society of Accountants, a chapter with nearly
Principal 500 members.
Deloitte & Touche LLP Mr. Gupta is a member of the American Institute of Certified Professional
Accounts and is a Management Accountant in the UK and Chartered
Accountant in India.
Bong Ho Ha is the Executive Funeral Director of Central Funeral Home,
the first of its kind in the Korean American community. He helps hard
working immigrant families from Asia whose loved ones have passed away.
Behind all tragedies, Mr. Ha guides them with warmth and courage, and if
needed, he provides financial help as well.
Over past years, Mr. Ha has won many awards including "Business Man of
the Year," "National Leadership Award," and "Korean of the Year in New
York." In addition, he has also received numerous plaques recognizing his
community service and dedication from churches, and community service
centers. Mr. Ha has also been awarded with the North America
Bong Ho Ha
Executive Funeral Operational Award, National Republican Congressional Committee, and
Director Funeral Home Manager of the Year.
Central Funeral Mr. Ha received his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering at the
Home prestigious HanYang University in Korea and continued to get his Master's
degree from Pratt Institute.
Liz Ho is dedicated to serving the Asian community in New York. For over
15 years, Ms. Ho has helped link corporate America to the Asian-
American marketplace. Many industrial awards have honored her achieve-

including serving as a Marketing Manager at HealthFirst, where she fos-
tered strategic alliances that helped the company assume the leading posi-
tion in the industry as well as a strong name recognition among the Asian
By joining VNR, Ms. Ho took on a new challenge of creating community
Liz Ho awareness on the increasing home healthcare needs. In a brief two years,
Director, Asian Services the Asian initiative has become one of VNR's fastest developing programs.
Visiting Nurse Regional Ms. Ho was born and raised in Taipei,Taiwan. She graduated from Boston
Health Care System University with a Master's Degree in Public Relations.
Wesley J. Hom manages the global profit and loss business between the Royal
Dutch Shell Group and the IBM Corporation, and leads a global team that is
responsible for the development and deployment of IBM solutions, research
offerings, products, and services to satisfy unique global customer require-
ments, while maximizing client satisfaction. He is also the Co-Chairman of
Asian Diversity for the IBM Corporation.
Previously, Mr. Hom was the Vice President for the Global Communications
Sector and Vice President of Market Development for the Capital Venture
Group organization, which set out to identify new emerging markets and
develop strategic partnerships. Before that, Mr. Hom was the Executive
Director for alliances between IBM and independent software vendors. He
Wes Hom also spent several years in Asia Pacific as Vice President for Advance
IBM Managing Director, Technology Solutions and Networking Hardware and Software businesses,
Sales & Distribution - and has held various management positions previously in the company.
Mr. Hom has advanced degrees in Computer Science and an MBA from New
IBM Corporation York University’s Stern School of Business.
Christina Hungspruke is the Director of Marketing for the Tri-State practice
of Resources Global Professionals. She has been with Resources since
September 2004. In her role, she oversees and executes all marketing, com-
munications, and branding efforts for the region. She has been successful in
developing corporate events, as well as in handling various marketing activities
to increase market awareness of the firm and drive business development
Prior to joining Resources, Ms. Hungspruke was the Director of
Communications for Sea Gate Travel in New York City. Before that, she was
the Manager of Marketing Services with American Express in Philadelphia. In
her spare time, she is an active member of NY Cares, a board member of
Christina Hungspruke UJIMA, an organization that promotes minority owned businesses in the
Director of Marketing- Philadelphia (and soon to be New York) areas, an exhibiting photographer, and
Tri-State practice avid tennis player.
Ms. Hungspruke has a BS in Business Administration/Marketing from Villanova
University and an MBA in Organizational Management from Drexel
Grace Hwang is the business unit's CFO for the VZW Headquarters
Marketing organization. Ms. Hwang's finance team manages a multi-billion
dollar budget pertaining to advertising and new product development. Her
reporting team generates insights from Enterprise Data Warehouse and
provides decision support on pricing, product launch, product portfolio
prioritization, and campaign effectiveness.
With 20 years of financial and business management experiences, Ms.
Hwang held various leadership positions in the telecommunications indus-
try managing budget, forecast, financial planning, strategic pricing, call cen-
ter/network facility planning, and sales compensation design and adminis-

Ms. Hwang earned her Bachelor's Degree from the National Taiwan
University. She acquired her MBA from UCLA's Anderson Graduate
Verizon Wireless School of Management.
In 1988, Byoung Ju Im founded Ben's Beauty Supply in Houston,Texas. Mr.
Im is a recognized Korean-American entrepreneur, executive, and business
leader in the beauty supply industry with 20 years of experience and a
futuristic business vision. He introduced the first-ever "Beauty Dealers
Trade Show" within the industry, developing and cultivating the market for
beauty supply products.The trade shows provided a venue for education
and information as well as a marketplace for the participants, which
included manufacturers, retailers, and beauticians. He was able to expand
distribution to Jessup, Maryland, which served 1,000 retail stores within
six states, and to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently, Ben's Beauty Supply

Besides contributing to the launch of novel therapies, Dr. Shieh spearheaded ini-
tiatives to search for alternative reagents and technologies in hopes of minimizing
the negative impact of industrial chemicals on the environment. He has served as

Chemistry. Dr. Shieh is an inventor of fifteen patents (issued and pending) related

Ms.Wu graduated Magna Cum Laude from The Fu Foundation School of

Patrick Yu has extensive experience in providing various audit, accounting, and
consulting services to clients in health care, handicapped and mental health,
