greatness

When you pick up the Spalding TF-1000 ZK Pro, you touch greatness. It's the same TF-1000 the nation’s top

collegiate players play, only better. The addition of superior foam backing under full ball pebbling makes handling

even more precise. Feel the difference. Play with greatness.

welcome to the nccaa men’s national championship

Dr. Ray

W elcome to Gibson County, Indiana, and Oakland City University for the 2011 National

Christian College Athletic Association’s Men’s Division I Basketball Championship.

Oakland City University is delighted to be the host for the 2011 National Tournament Finals.

Barber We congratulate each participating student/athlete and coach for the accomplishments

and successes during the 2010-11 basketball season. Your endeavors have enabled your team

President to advance to the NCCAA Men’s Division I Basketball National Championship that involves

the NCCAA’s “Final Eight”.

This week will provide every participant, from athletes and coaches to spectators in the

stands, the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to and community in Jesus Christ.

May the Christian spirit of love, justice, and fair play direct all of our activities, not only in

this tournament, but in each day of our lives.

I would like to offer a special word of thanks to all of those who have given so much

of their time and effort to make this tournament possible. It is no small feat to bring together

eight competing teams for a week of back-to-back, great basketball! We appreciate all that you

have done.

Again, we welcome you to the campus of Oakland City University and trust you will

have a great week of fellowship and basketball.

Yours In Christ,

Oakland City

University Dr. Ray Barber, President

Dan O n behalf of the NCCAA and the Board of Directors, I welcome you to the NCCAA

Division I Men’s National Basketball Championship. It is exciting for all of us to have

eight institutions from across the United States competing in Gibson County, Indiana, on the

Wood campus of Oakland City University this week.

This event is just one of our 22 national championships and three invitationals sanc-

tioned by the NCCAA. Over 13,000 student-athletes and 96 institutions make up the NC-

Executive Director CAA, and the Men’s Basketball Championship is an important part of our Association.

Congratulations to each student-athlete and coach who participates in these games.

Your involvement in this championship setting certainly represents many weeks of dedicated

time and work. It is also a statement that you stand for the Lord while you compete.

The NCCAA thanks the NCCAA Men’s Division I Tournament Organizing Committee,

Mike Sandifar, Director of Athletics at Oakland City University, and his entire staff for their

excellent leadership in organizing and administrating this fine event. I am also very grateful

for the time and dedicated work of the NCCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and

its chairperson, Ryan Cottingham, from Spring Arbor University.

Sincere appreciation goes to Dr. Ray Barber, President of Oakland City University, and

his administrative colleagues for their willingness to host a championship of this magnitude.

The NCCAA is unique and stands alone as the only national intercollegiate athletics

association that uses athletics to serve the Great Commission. As we attempt to assist our

student-athletes in shaping their Game Plan for Life, we hope you thoroughly enjoy your ex-

perience at this NCCAA Championship event.

2011 NCCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 3

national christian college athletic association

The NCCAA was incorporated in 1968 to provide a Christian-based

organization that functions uniquely as a national and international

agency for the promotion of outreach and ministry, and for the mainte-

nance, enhancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletic competi-

tion with a Christian perspective.

Approximately 100 Christian colleges and universities comprise the NCCAA, involving well

over 13,000 student-athletes and 500 coaches. A combined total of 22 national championships in

men’s and women’s sports is sponsored by the NCCAA.

The very existence of the NCCAA speaks to the need of a different game plan for college ath-

letics in the midst of an era when the very foundations of our society are being eroded morally.

The NCCAA wants to step into the gap and become a vehicle for implementing a positive and

purposeful athletic experience in cooperation with member institutions and their student-athletes.

The NCCAA game plan is to assist colleges in producing winners in the game of life. Its intent

is to assist the colleges and coaches in producing a game plan that will influence the student-

athlete immediately as well as for his/her entire life: a plan that will challenge the student-athlete

through regional and national competition; a plan that expects academic credibility; a plan of

maximum development through assisting college coaches with leadership, programs, and materi-

als; a plan that encourages a mature functioning body of Christians, able to serve family, school,

church, and society.

The NCCAA is unique in its purpose, its constituency, and hopefully its outcome. It is not who

wins the game on the athletic field that really counts, but rather who wins that all-important game

being fought in the lives of our nation’s young people. The NCCAA makes a difference in devel-

oping well balanced, visionary leaders of tomorrow.

The NCCAA game plan includes: dedicated and caring leadership, national competition, inter-

national outreach and ministry through athletic teams, discipleship programs and materials for

student-athletes and coaches, and conferences on current key issues.

We believe:

Athletics are a means to an end, not the end in themselves.

The process is as important as the performance.

The person (student-athlete) is more important than the program.

The National Office of the NCCAA is located in Greenville, South Carolina.

2011 NCCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 11

the pete maravich memorial award

T he shaggy hair, the floppy socks - trademarks of an era too soon gone

by, of an individual undoubtedly ahead of his time.

His name was Pete Maravich. “Pistol Pete”, they called him, for no-

body ever put up more shots and nobody ever made more in a three-year

college basketball career. He is the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-

tion’s all-time scoring leader, though he played in the late 1960s--years

before freshmen were declared eligible for varsity competition and two

decades before college basketball’s three-point rule. Maravich scored

like no other.

When Louisiana State University’s Chris Jackson scored 55 points

in one game in the 1988-89 season, he set a record for most points scored

by a NCAA freshman, but he didn’t come close to setting a school record.

For, you see, Pistol Pete also attended LSU.

Maravich scored in the 60s on four different occasions in college

ball. His 69-point contest against Alabama in 1970, his senior year, is

a SEC record, but then his name is associated with more records at his

school and in the conference than any other 10 men. Of 50 records listed

in the SEC press guide, Maravich is first in 18. Six of those categories

weren’t kept back when he played.

He was college basketball’s Frank Lloyd Wright, a Michaelangelo

in shorts, a virtuoso whose skills transcended his level. He averaged 43

points a game over a three-year period. Nobody had ever done that well

in one year.

Though he played and played well as a professional, he never quite

measured up to what was expected of him. An immortal in college, he

never reached that status in the pros, although he did average 25 points a

game for nine years until a knee injury prematurely ended his career.

In 1987, a heart condition prematurely ended his life. He died while

playing basketball in a church gymnasium on the same day he was to

appear on a radio program with nationally known Christian psychiatrist

Dr. James Dobson. Maravich had become a Christian following his NBA

days and was a devout Bible reader. In fact, he began consuming the

Bible as he had consumed scoring records.

And now, through the NCCAA, the legend of Pete Maravich is be-

ing perpetuated. The association announced in March, 1989 that a NC-

CAA memorial award would be named in honor of Maravich, with the

first selection being made in 1990.

It is called the Pete Maravich Memorial Award, and it goes to the

NCCAA player who most exemplifies the spirit of the organization. The

Maravich Award replaces the Murchison Award, which was discontinued

after the 1986 season.

line. From the charity stripe, he put home a torrid 86.4 percent of his tries.

A business major, with an emphasis in finance, Adamson has compiled a

3.757 grade point average and has been on the Dallas Baptist University Presi-

Schlolar/Athlete Award recipient in 2009-10, and was the DBU Athletic

Scholar Award winner.

Athletically, Adamson was an All-Heartland Conference Second Team

selection in 2010-11, and in 2009-10, he was All-Heartland Conference

Honorable Mention and an NCCAA Second Team All-American.

According to Dallas Baptist University Coach Blake Flickner, “Braxton

has been a leader sixne the day he stepped onto our campus.

“He is involved in his church and often takes other students with hinm to

church, and he is a role model for all of those with whom he comes in touch.” 6’0” - Guard
