We are very excited to be celebrating our ninth year of competition and invite your group to
take part in this event. The competition has been such a success, cash awards will be
continued. We hope you join us for the second time at our new venue, Oviedo High School
in Oviedo, Florida. The school has a new fifty six million dollar renovated facility with easy
access to the Florida Turnpike, 417, I4, UCF, hotels and restaurants. The facility will allow
practice space in a second gymnasium and theatre use for solo competition. Due to input
from our directors, the 2010 competition will be a ONE day event running in two venues.
We hope this will reduce the cost for our teams and allow us to award additional cash prizes.
We are currently engaged in applying for state sanctioning by the FHSAA to permit FDTDA
the rights to district, regional and state competitions for Florida dance teams.

Since its inception, the mission of F.D.T.D.A. has been to achieve the highest standards of
performance from dance teams by promoting cultural, intellectual, material, social and
sportsmanlike interests of the dance profession.

                                                  Entrance Requirements

F.D.T.D.A. operates independently of all associations, organizations, clinics and camps. The contest is open to all
Elementary, Jr. High, Middle School, High School and All Star teams that are members of the FDTDA organization.

Entrance is made by submitting the following:

1. The appropriate entry forms found at            www.fdtda.com
2. Each individual must sign a waiver/release form, which can also be found at www.fdtda.com
3. A non-refundable deposit of $250.00 per squad will be due on December 18th, 2009. This deposit will be deducted from
          your total invoice due February 1st., 2010
4. Entries are not official until both fees and forms have been received by the contest office. Entry fees are non-refundable
     after February 12th, 2010. Teams will be penalized $50 per routine for late registration.
 5. Any changes, additions, substitutions or deletions to your entries MUST be made no later than February 12th, 2010 or a
 $100 penalty will be assessed.

Timing begins and ends with the music on the tape/CD and does not include prop set up, entering, positioning
or exiting.

                                             Music Requirements
All music should be recorded on a quality CD that has excellent musical quality. A separate CD must be
furnished for each routine entered and the CD, as well as the case, should clearly be marked with TEAM
NAME, CLASS, SONG TITLE and CATEGORY. Labels will be furnished for your convenience (if time
permits). Please provide a separate back up tape for each routine entered. (ALL MUSIC MUST BE DEEMED
AGE APPROPRIATE).

                                               Performance Schedule
Performances are scheduled on a random basis, not in the order received at the contest office. Performances
will be adjusted accordingly to facilitate costume changes but will not be altered for tardiness.

                                          Category Descriptions
JAZZ: A dance style that includes a combination of rhythmic, creative body movements which interpret and
emphasize a musical selection. Props may be used, but should not be the main focus.

KICK: Any style of performance that includes a variety of kicks choreographed with a minimum of 50 kicks.
It may include dance combinations, but must have a majority of the routine focused on kick combinations
including but not limited to battements, snap, jump, hitch and fan kicks.

POM: Any performance that utilizes pom pons in at least 80% of the routine. It should emphasize sharp,
energetic movements and contain pattern, formations and level changes.

PROP: Any style of performance that incorporates and utilizes a visual aid as the object of focus for at least
80% of the routine. Props must be utilized or touched.


HIPHOP: A style of dance that includes street dance, music or fast change of pace music or movements. This
should not be confused with jazz. SHOULD BE AGE APPROPRIATE!
LYRICAL: A hybrid of ballet, jazz and modern dance. It is more emotive than jazz, less codified than ballet
and pulls movement vocabulary from modern dance. This form is a free flowing style that is set to slower pop
songs and ballads.

NOVELTY: Any style of performance choreographed to place special attention on a CHARACTER OR THEME
TITLE AS REFLECTED IN THE MUSIC. Props may be used but should not be the main focus. EMPHASIS
SHOULD BE ON THEME OR CHARACTER TITLE. PLEASE CALL CONTEST OFFICE FOR APPROVAL
FOR ENTRANCE IN THIS CATEGORY.

MILITARY: Any style of performance that emphasizes sharp, concise movements and utilizes formation
changes, patterns, footwork and dynamic presentation.

SHOW: Dance utilizing a combination of dance elements and styles. Presentation should interpret a theme
and emphasis should be on the overall entertainment value. Props and sets may be used to generate overall
effect.

OPEN: Dance utilizing any of the above styles. Props may be used to generate overall effect. This category may
be used if you are unable to distinguish between the categories above or if you would like to enter a TEAM
style combination of dances.

ENSEMBLES: Ensemble performances are optional and DO NOT count toward your overall score for the state
champion award. You may perform any type of routine in ensemble competition. Your small and large
ensembles will be scheduled back to back; therefore no individual may be in more than one ensemble.

OFFICER/DUO/TRIO: are optional and DO NOT count to wards your overall score. No individual may be in
more than one duo or trio.

PARENT CATEGORY: Any parent of a registered team member. Parents will be adjudicated against each other
and will have no bearing on a team’s overall score.
DIRECTORS MAY NOT COMPETE WITH PARENTS

SOLOS: Soloists will be divided into FOUR classifications based on the participant’s grade level. Soloists may
choose one category of routine to perform. A soloist may only enter ONE routine. Each soloist must be
registered and competiting in at least ONE team event with their SCHOOL!
         Grades 3 and under         Elementary              Categories: Ballet, Tap, Hip-Hop, Lyrical, Jazz
         Grades 4-6                 Junior
         Grades 7-9                 Intermediate

Will be awarded to the highest scoring team in each performance category regardless of classification. (jazz,
prop, novelty, etc..)

CLASSIFICATION STATE CHAMPION TROPHY:
Will be awarded to the highest combined scoring team in each classification of competition. (Small, large, all
star elem, jr. sr., novice)****

1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded in each classification if more than three teams are entered.

STATE CHAMPION:
Will be awarded to the team with the three highest point totals overall, regardless of category or class.

ELEMENTARY/JUNIOR/INTERMEDIATE SOLOISTS:
The top three soloists will receive 1st -3rd place medal/trophy.

SENIOR SOLOISTS:
The top five soloists will receive 1-5th place trophies and the top three will receive cash awards.

ENSEMBLES/DUO/TRIOS:
1st-3rd place trophies will be awarded to the top three scores in both small and large ensemble competition.
                                           Rules and Regulations

PROPS, BACKDROPS & HAZARDOUS MATERIAL:

 A prop is anything not worn on the body as part of the costume. Props MAY NOT require electricity, smoke,
fog, fire, fireworks, air compression, aerosol or non-aerosol sprays or any other type of flammable or hazardous
materials. In addition, confetti, glitter, balloons, streamers or other similar substances may not be used or
thrown during the performance. The uses of knives, swords, or other objects that may be considered dangerous
are strictly prohibited.

If you are using prop(s) or backdrops, please note that the entrance to the gym is 6 feet wide by 8 feet high,
with no room for storing props. Please plan to arrive early to assemble your props.
All props and backdrops will be inspected prior to the performance and any item that appears unsafe or fails to
meet the safety regulation as stated will not be allowed. Props with rubber or plastic wheels or any moving
parts that come in contact with the floor must be taped and/or padded. Any team that damages the
performance floor will be billed for repairs.

The use of acrobatic tricks, lifts, pyramids and stunts is allowed. However, it is up to each group’s director to
determine if a stunt is too dangerous based on the team’s capabilities. If you have any questions concerning the
stunts or acrobatics you should call the contest office.

FDTDA and Oviedo High School WILL NOT be responsible for any injuries as a result of a performance. No
cheerleading stunts will be allowed.

ALL SENIOR TEAMS INCLUDING J.V. H.S. AND ALL STARS MUST SCORE

90-100 SUPERIOR OR 270 TOTAL to receive a 1st place
80-89 EXCELLENT OR 240 TOTAL to receive a 2nd place
70-79 GOOD      OR 210 TOTAL to receive a 3 rd place

(REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF ENTRIES, THIS CRITERION WILL BE FOLLOWED.

                                                   Penalties

There will be a penalty judge viewing each TEAM, SHOW and ENSEMBLE performance. A penalty sheet
authorized by the Penalty judge will be turned in with your score sheets. PENALTIES WILL BE ASSESSED
FOR ALL VIOLATIONS.

TIMING PENALTY:
Any violation of the following performance timing limitations will result in a 3 POINT PENALTY being
deducted from the TOTAL FINAL SCORE of that routine. Performance timing is from the first to last beat of
the music. Directors will be notified immediately.
 1. Under 1:30 min. or over 3:30 min. for team
 2. Under 1:30 min. or over 3:30 min. for ensembles
 3. Under 1:00 min. or over 2:15 min. for solos
 4. Under 5:00 min. or over 10:00 min for show

CLASSIFICATION PENALTY
The penalty judge will count the number of performers on the floor for all routines. Any team performing out
of classification or without the required number of performers will be penalized 5 points from the total final
score of that routine.
MUSIC PENALTIES
Inappropriate lyrics for students will be assessed a five (5) point penalty. Call contest office with concerns.

All changes, additions, substitutions or deletions to your entries MUST be made in writing and faxed no later
than Feb. 12, 2010. If your team classification changes after this date, you will be charged a $100 penalty and a
5 pt deduction per judge.

PROP/TAPE/PADDING PENALTIES
A contest staff member will be inspecting all props and backdrops prior to performance. If an illegal prop or
hazardous material is utilized during a performance it will result in DISQUALIFICATION from that routine.
Any questionable prop will be inspected again by the Contest Director and Penalty Judge who will render a
final decision.

All participants must wear soft sole shoes (unless barefoot) so that the floor will not be marked, scuffed, or
damaged. Any group that marks, scuffs or damages the floor will be responsible for damages.

BOUNDARY PENALTIES
No penalty will be assessed for stepping on or moving out of boundary lines on the performance floor.
