Homophones and Spelling Errors Lesson Plan The activities below are an extension to the Skillswise “What are Homophones?” factsheet, http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/words/spelling/recognising/homophones Curriculum Refs: Wt/E3.4 Wt/L1.6 Wt/L2.7 Ww/E3.1 Ww/L1.1 Rw/E3.3 Rw/L1.1 Rw/L2.2 I introduce the students to the computers Spellchecker and Thesaurus first and the activities demonstrate that the computer does not really read the word, it only checks for correct spelling. Activity 1 is loaded onto the laptops and the students delete the incorrect word. Activity 2 is loaded onto the laptops and the students insert the correct word. Activity 3 is loaded onto the laptops and the students first use the spellchecker and discover that it does not recognise any spelling errors. They then identify the incorrect words using a dictionary or the thesaurus as appropriate. If the students have the computer skills I ask them to bold the incorrect words. A good extension to this exercise is to use the Ode to the Spell Checker poem.
All the activities can either be loaded on the PC or printed and used as a worksheet.
