CATCHPHRASE 2000 Wythnos 17

Week 17, Monday. Today, you’ll learn:

Rhifau. Beth ydy rhif ffôn?

paned o de / disglaid o de, eisiau, Mae'n hawdd, Beth am chwarae gêm gyda'r cwestiwn

Most people who went to school in Wales know numbers from 0 to 10 even if they don't speak Welsh. If

you weren't born in Wales or have forgotten how to say them, don't worry you'll soon pick them up. It's

handy to know them when giving people your telephone number, house number or extension number at

work. We’re going to practice Beth ydy rhif ffôn, followed by a person’s name or a shop name. Beth ydy

1, 2, 3? Beth ydy 8, 9, 10? Beth ydy rhif ffôn Daniel? Just like you Linda is learning the language and

she's asking Guto for help. But Guto offers her a cup of tea, Beth am baned o de Linda? - (What

about a cup of tea?) There'a slight change to baned after Beth am. Guto asks Linda Beth am baned o

de? and Linda replies, Dim diolch. Beth am help gyda'r rhifau - (What about help with the numbers).

And - mae'n hawdd - (It's easy). Look out for Dim fel Guto. There are 2 meanings to dim …

Listen to the dialogue:

Guto - Beth am baned o de Linda?

Linda - Dim diolch Guto. Beth am help gyda'r rhifau os gwelwch yn dda?

Guto - Iawn Linda. Beth am chwarae gêm gyda'r cwestiwn beth ydy? Beth ydy three yn Gymraeg.

Iawn?

Linda - Iawn Guto. Beth ydy nought yn Gymraeg?

Guto - Dim. Dim fel Guto.

Linda - Beth ydy one two and three?

Guto - Un, dau tri

Linda - Beth ydy five, six and seven?

Guto - Pump, chwech, saith.

Linda - Beth ydy eight, nine and ten?

Guto - Wyth, naw. deg.

Linda - O diolch Guto. Mae'n hawdd. Un, dau, tri, pedwar, pump, chwech, saith, wyth, naw, deg.

Guto - Beth am dim Linda. Dim fel Guto!

Did you hear DIM fel Guto - (NOT like Guto). But Guto attempts to make a joke of it by suggesting he is

DIM. It's a good way of remembering new words if you connect them with a word in another language.

Mae'n hawdd - (It's easy). Mae'n hawdd but I'm sure that it needs a lot of practice to remember the

numbers yn Gymraeg - (in Welsh). Say the numbers to yourself from nought to ten. It's good practice.

Week 17, Tuesday. Today you’ll learn:

Pam, Dw i eisiau, Arhoswch funud, Rwyt ti'n garedig iawn, o'r diwedd

Sut mae'r rhifau yn Gymraeg? Iawn? - (How are you numbers in Welsh? OK?) I'm sure one to ten are

OK - un i ddeg yn iawn. Notice the slight change to deg when I use 'i' before d - i ddeg the d changes to

dd. It happens all the time with d. I before dau - i ddau, and i before dawnsio becomes i ddawnsio. Try

to remember, because these changes are an integral part of the Welsh language. It's a simple device to

make the language move smoothly without a break. We are now going to look at telephone numbers

using un i ddeg. Bethan is asking for Daniel's number. Does Guto want to give it I wonder?

Listen to the dialogue:

Bethan - Guto. Dw i eisiau rhif ffôn Daniel. Beth ydy rhif ffôn Daniel?

Guto - Pam wyt ti eisiau rhif ffôn Daniel?

Bethan - Dw i eisiau siarad a Daniel.

Guto - O ie? Rwyt ti eisiau siarad a Daniel. Mm... rhif Daniel. Beth ydy rhif ffôn Daniel?

Bethan - Guto. Dw i eisiau rhif ffôn Daniel... PLIS…

Guto - OK. Arhoswch funud... Mmmm... Caerdydd 20 570007.

Bethan - Diolch Guto! Rwyt ti'n garedig iawn. O'r diwedd.

Guto - Rwyt ti'n hapus nawr Bethan?

Did you understand Dw i eisiau - (I want), notice there’s no n before eisiau - Dw i eisiau rhif ffôn Daniel - (I

want Daniel's telephone number) - literally I want the phone number of Daniel. Beth ydy rhif ffôn Daniel?

- (What is Daniel’s phone number?) And Guto replies - Pam wyt ti eisiau rhif ffôn Daniel? - (Why do

you want Daniel’s phone number?) Pam? - (Why?) Siarad a - (to talk to). Dw i eisiau siarad a - Siarad

is always followed by A when speaking to or with someone. Dw i eisiau siarad a Daniel - (I want to

speak to Daniel). Did you get Arhoswch funud - (Wait a minute - hold on a minute). Arhoswch is the

command form of aros - (to wait or stay). There's slight change from aros where an internal 'H' is added

- Arhoswch. Look out for it. And the sarcasm from Bethan after she eventually got the number from

Guto. Bethan said - Rwyt ti'n garedig iawn - (You are very kind). O'r diwedd - (At last). Then Guto

replies rwyt ti’n hapus nawr Bethan? - (are you happy now Bethan?)

Week 17, Wednesday. Today, you’ll learn:

canlyniadau'r gemau, pêl-droed, rygbi, Beth am y sgôr, rhwng

Now you’re going to learn numbers from 10 to 50. Do you have all the family phone numbers and all your

friends' numbers? Numbers in Welsh go up in tens. Ten - deg, twenty - dau ddeg, thirty - tri deg, and yes

forty is pedwar deg and then pum deg is fifty. People say pum deg and not pump deg. All the numbers

in between the tens are from un i ddeg. So twenty one will be dau ddeg un. Thirty six will be tri deg

chwech. Forty eight will be pedwar deg wyth. Guto is listening to the scores of rugby and soccer

matches. We use dwy instead of dau and tair for three goals, not three but tair. Usually words

borrowed from other languages are feminine - but not all. In this case goals are feminine. So dwy gôl,

tair gôl, pedair gôl, pum gôl. All the rest are saith gôl, wyth gôl etc. Watch out for the scores. There

are some shocks!

Listen to the dialogue:

Llais - Nawr Canlyniadau’r gemau pêl-droed a rygbi

Castellnedd - un deg pedwar Abertawe - pedwar deg dau

Caerdydd - dim Casnewydd - dau ddeg un

Pontypridd - dau ddeg wyth Penybont - tri deg pump

Llanelli - un deg tri Maesteg - pum deg dau

Catrin - Hei Guto! Rhys! Dw i eisiau gweld...

Guto - Beth am y sgôr rhwng...

Rhys - Shwsh Mam a Dad dw i eisiau clywed...

Llais - Caerdydd - tair Abertawe - dim

Wrecsam - pump Brentford - dwy

Guto - Reit. Blind Date Catrin?

Catrin - Wfft! Dynion!

Did you follow the scores? Castellnedd - (Neath) un deg pedwar - (fourteen). Abertawe - (Swansea)

pedwar deg dau - (forty two). Caerdydd - (Cardiff) dim -(nothing) and Casnewydd - (Newport) dau ddeg

un - (twenty one). Pontypridd dau ddeg wyth - (twenty eight). Pen y bont - (Bridgend) tri deg pump.

Llanelli un deg tri - (thirteen), while Maesteg scored an incredible pum deg dau - (fifty two) against Llanelli

and what about Caerdydd - tair, Abertawe - dim, Wrecsam - pump, Brentford - dwy. Some shocks for

supporters there! Then Catrin interrupts the announcement with 'Hei Guto! Rhys! Dw i eisiau gweld ...

But she wasn't allowed to finish her complaint. Dw i eisiau gweld - (I want to see). Rhys replies Dw i

eisiau clywed - (I want to hear). Did you get Beth am y sgôr rhwng...? - (What about the score

between...?) Then the soccer - pêl-droed scores come up. After these Guto is prepared to allow Catrin

to see Blind Date. I don't think many women would put up with that. Do you? Catrin is annoyed 'Wfft

Dynion!' - (Men!!) she says Wfft is often used as an expression of - O I don't know! That says a lot!

Week 17, Thursday. Today you’ll learn:

Beth ydy rhif ty...? Ble mae... yn byw? Daliwch y lein

rhifau pum deg i gant, Pên-blwydd, dathlu, yn barod, yn canu

How about numbers from 10 to 100 - o ddeg i gant. Some more changes. Just like 'i' before deg

changes it to ddeg 'O' does the same thing, deg - o ddeg. Then 'I' before cant changes it to gant - i gant

and some others cerdded - i gerdded - (to walk); cyfarfod - (to meet) - i gyfarfod. Let's move on to rhifau

pum deg i gant - (fifty to one hundred). Just like ten to fifty the intermediate numbers are as from dim i

ddeg - (nought to ten). We know pum deg - (fifty) already, sixty is chwe deg, although you might hear

people saying chwech deg. Therefore sixty six is chwe deg chwech. Saith deg is seventy and eighty is

wyth deg. Yes you're right - ninety is naw deg. It's Daniel's birthday and Glenys, Guto's mother would

like to send him a card. What's the number of his house - Beth ydy rhif y ty?

Listen to the dialogue:

Bethan - O diar! Chwe deg llythyr yn y ffeil yn barod - pum deg saith 'ma … (Ffôn yn canu) Swyddfa

Guto. Bethan yma …

Glenys - Glenys yma. Bethan. Dw i eisiau help.

Bethan - Sut dw i'n gallu helpu Glenys?

Glenys - Wel. Mae Daniel ffrind Rhys yn dathlu pen-blwydd. Ond beth ydy rhif y ty?

Bethan - Daliwch y lein Glenys. Guto … Glenys ar y ffôn.

Guto - Ie Bethan... Dim problem... Hylo. Beth sy'n bod Mam?

Glenys - Dim, Guto bach. Dw i eisiau rhif. Beth ydy rhif ty Daniel?

Guto - Wrth gwrs. Mae e'n dathlu pen-blwydd. 18 oed. Rhif y ty - wyth deg tri Ffordd y Parc.

Glenys - Diolch Guto. Wyth deg tri Ffordd y Parc. Hwyl!

Wel Bethan was in a bit of a state state wasn't she? Chwe deg llythyr yn y ffeil yn barod a pum deg saith

yma - (60 letters in the file already and fifty seven here still to file). Bethan answers the phone - Swyddfa

Guto - (Guto's office) and she says - Bethan yma - (Bethan here). It’s Glenys who needs help Dw i

eisiau help. Then Daniel ffrind Rhys - (Rhys' friend Daniel) - yn dathlu pen-blwydd - dathlu to celebrate

or celebrating a birthday. Beth ydy rhif ty Daniel? - (What's the number of Daniel’s house?) Guto asks

his mother Beth sy'n bod Mam? - (What's the matter Mum?)

Did you understand Daliwch y lein - (Hold the line). Dal means to hold and the command form is

Daliwch. Bethan then transfers the call to Guto and tells him Guto mae Glenys ar y ffôn - (Guto Glenys is

on the phone). Daliwch y lein. Daliwch y babi! Daliwch y parsel! Guto mentions Daniel's age, notice

the word oed after the number un deg wyth oed. Literally eighteen age or age eighteen. Beth ydy oed

Daniel? - Un deg wyth oed. Or just un deg wyth and the house number wyth deg tri Ffordd y Parc - (83

Ffordd y Parc). Keep practising.

Week 17, Friday. Today, you’ll learn:

Adolygu rhifau

Dydd Gwener, peint, Mae e'n gallu cael peint nawr, gobeithio, dim ond, diod, peint, gwin gwyn

We've covered numbers fairly well. Beth am adolygu? - (What about revising?) Do you remember un i

ddeg - (1-10) then deg i bum deg - (10-50), then pum deg i gant - (50-100). Our family are yn y tafarn -

(in the pub) celebrating Daniel’s birthday. Look out for, Mae e'n gallu cael peint nawr - (He can have, or

is able to have a pint now). Dim ond - (only) - one pint I hope - dim ond un peint, gobeithio.

Listen to the dialogue:

Catrin - Beth ydy oed Daniel heddiw Rhys?

Rhys - Mae e'n un deg wyth oed heddiw. Mae e'n gallu cael peint nawr!

Catrin - Dim ond un peint gobeithio!

Daniel - Beth am wyth peint Rhys?

Rhys - Beth am naw peint Mam?

Catrin - Shwsh Rhys

Guto - Dau win gwyn, pedwar lager a wisgi plis.

Bethan - Mae'r Bingo'n dechrau. Ydych chi'n barod?

Galw’r rhifau - … un deg chwech, dau ddeg un, saith, tri deg chwech, pum deg pedwar, chwe deg un,

pump, pedwar deg tri...

Bethan - Dim gobaith! Dim ots!

Guto - Pen-blwydd Hapus Daniel. Un deg wyth oed heddiw.

Catrin asks Beth yw oed Daniel heddiw Rhys? - (How old is Daniel today Rhys?) Did you get Daniel’s

age he’s un deg wyth oed heddiw - (18 today). Catrin’s a little worried and tells Daniel dim ond un peint

gobeithio - (only one one pint I hope).

Rhys and Daniel are feeling mischievous. Beth am wyth peint? - (How about 8 pints?) Daniel says

Rhys goes one step further Beth am naw peint? - (How about 9 pints?) Bethan is rather keen to play

bingo? Mae’r Bingo yn dechrau ydych chi’n barod? - (The Bingo’s starting are you ready?) She’s soon

disappointed after she hears the numbers. Dim gobaith - (No hope). Dim ots - (It doesn’t matter).

Guto ordered dau win gwyn - (2 white wines), pedwar lager - (4 lagers) and a whisky. Again there's a

slight change after dau - luckily only the number dau - (two) changes names. Dau win (The 'g' is

dropped and the rest of the word remains). Did you get the Bingo numbers? Un deg chwech - (sixteen),

dau ddeg un - (twenty one), saith was easy - seven, and tri deg chwech. Don't forget that when six

comes at the end of a number as a six you say chwech. When it comes before a ten it's chwe as in

chwe deg. The next number was pum deg pedwar - (fifty four). The same here with pump before deg -

pum without the final p. Chwe deg un - (sixty one) and pedwar deg tri. Guto seems unconcerned by the

bingo and just wishes Daniel a happy birthday - Pen-blwydd hapus Daniel.

Why don't you go down to the local and try them on your friends in Welsh. You deserve to celebrate!
