Caravel Academy Wrestling Rules

1. Win with class & lose with class. You’re representing your teammates, your school,

your family and yourself. Make everyone proud of Caravel Wrestling. Never demean

your opponent in any way – no taunting or showing up an opponent. Keep personal

celebrations on the mat in line; share your joys and frustrations with teammates and

coaches away from the mat.

2. Look good, feel good, and wrestle your best. National Federation of State High

School Associations (NFHS) rules prohibit the removal of any part of your singlet while

on the mat, in other words leave the straps up. Be ready, fully dressed with warm-up

off and headgear on, even before the previous match is over.

3. Student athletes who are a consistent disciplinary problem in school, practice or

away at events will be removed from the team. You must adhere to team rules, school

rules and all DIAA and NFHS rules and guidelines.

4. Schoolwork comes first. For that reason there is mandatory study hall in Room 505

everyday from 3:15-4 o’clock. You must maintain a 2.0 average. Ineligible athletes

cannot participate in any matches or tournaments. If extra help is needed, get it or

ask for assistance.

5. Attendance is required at all study halls, meetings, practices and matches.

Unexcused absences in excess of 3 will result in being suspended from participation in

one or more matches or tournaments. Continued absences post 1st suspension will

result in being removed from the team. Excused absences may include school-related

activities such as SAT tests, tutoring, lifting, another club activity, etc.…. These must

be cleared with the coaching staff PRIOR to missing practice. During the wrestling

season, family activities and vacations need to be cleared in advance. Not having you

there hurts the Team.

6. Be on time for school as well as all meetings, practices and matches. Tardiness will

result in disciplinary measures. Dress, layout and clean mats swiftly, not doing so will

result in team disciplinary measures.

7. Use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs will not be tolerated.

8. Behavior in practice room, locker rooms and at matches will be professional at all times.

Disrespecting of Coaches, Referees, or Teammates will not be tolerated at any time.

Profanity is not acceptable for any reason. Furthermore, no one throws headgear.

Such behavior will result in suspension from the team.

9. To earn a letter you must wrestle in at least SIX events (dual meets and tournaments

count as 1 event).

10. Not giving 100% in practice hurts the Team and you. Your performance and attitude

affects everyone. Don’t let the Team or yourself down.

11. A mandatory hydration test at the beginning of the season will be required. This

establishes how much weight each and every wrestler would be able to lose in any given

week, safely. Excess weight loss will no longer be allowed in wrestling. All wrestlers

wishing to go down in weight must do so gradually and cannot exceed the limits set forth

by the hydration test. This new procedure has been added for the safety of the wrestlers.

In accordance with the requirements of NFHS wrestlers cannot compete without their

hydration test or compete at a lower weight than the results of the hydration test deem as

safe for that individual.

12. Wrestle-Offs will be held during the first month of practices to establish the varsity

line-ups. (Tentative November 24th) Once a wrestler wins his weight class, that position

is his. Another wrestler can challenge the starting wrestler at various times throughout the

season but must beat the starting wrestler twice to earn that spot. The starting wrestler

only needs to beat the challenger once to maintain that position. The coaches have the

ultimate decision as to who is wrestling in dual meets. No positions are guaranteed as

coaching strategies come into play. If a starting wrestler is deemed academically ineligible

during the season, they automatically lose their starting position. Once they become

eligible they have to challenge the starter for that position and must beat the wrestler

twice to earn the spot back.

Tentative dates are: November 24th, December 22nd, January 13th, & February 2nd

13. Weight loss must be done with proper dieting and exercise.

14. Singlet’s, warm-ups and bags are signed out to individuals. If you sign out a uniform

and then trade with someone – if they lose it, you’ve lost it and owe the team.

15. Remember the coaching staff is there for you. If you need to talk about anything,

please do. You’ll never be penalized for openness. You are always welcome to call Head

Coach Michael Welch at (302) 373-4730 to discuss anything, including personal problems,

school problems, and team related problems including absences and tardiness.

16. Keeping your family informed about team rules and news is, in itself, a team rule. We

need their support. All too often parents’ only relationship with high school teams deals

with problems or fund-raising requests. We need their support as fans IN THE STANDS.

Please make them part of the team as much as possible.

17. If a wrestler would like to ride home from a match or tournament in another vehicle

other than the school bus, permission must be granted by Coach Welch. The coaching

staff needs to account for all the wrestlers to make sure no wrestlers are left behind.

18. This year we will make it our point to have the full wrestling schedule including hotel

and tournament information on the web site, caravelwrestling.com If you have any

questions concerning the dates, times or location information please do not hesitate to talk

with one of the coaches.

19. The following people will be available to assist the team in training during the season

and are considered, the Coaching Staff:

Michael Welch.............Head Coach (302) 373-4730

Brian Welch………..Assistant Coach (302) 753-2949

Raul Mendoza……..Assistant Coach (302) 420-5749

Francis Graves…….Assistant Coach (302) 468-0900

Nick Gray……………Assistant Coach (302) 584-5308

Andy Wendle………Assistant Coach (484) 557-5193

I the undersigned have read and understand the rules and policy’s set forth for the Caravel

Academy Wrestling Team.
