Don’t Rain On My Parade
Don’t tell me not to live, just sit and putter Life’s candy and the sun’s a ball of butter Don’t bring around a cloud to rain on my parade Don’t tell me not to fly, I simply got to If someone takes a spill, it’s me and not you Who told you you’re allowed to rain on my parade I’ll march my band out, I’ll beat my drum And if I’m fanned out, your turn at bat, sir At least I didn’t fake it, hat, sir I guess I didn’t make it But whether I’m the rose of sheer perfection A freckle on the nose of life’s complexion The Cinderella or the shine apple of its eye I gotta fly once, I gotta try once, Only can die once, right, sir? Ooh, life is juicy, juicy and you see, I gotta have my bite, sir. Get ready for me love, ‘cause I’m a “comer” I simply gotta march, my heart’s a drummer Don’t bring around the cloud to rain on my parade, I’m gonna live and live NOW! Get what I want, I know how! One roll for the whole shebang! One throw that bell will go clang, Eye on the target and wham, One shot, one gun shot and bam! Hey, Mr. Arnstein, here I am ... I’ll march my band out, I will beat my drum, And if I’m fanned out, your turn at bat, sir, At least I didn’t fake it, hat, sir, I guess I didn’t make it Get ready for me love, ‘cause I’m a “comer” I simply gotta march, my heart’s a drummer Nobody, no, nobody, is gonna rain on my parade!
Dear Fellow East Cobbers, If newspapers could have an audio element you would be hearing Don’t Rain on My Parade as sung by Barbra Streisand from the 1968 movie, Funny Girl, as you read this month’s publisher’s note. You can go to youtube.com and see Barbra singing this song. Fourteen years ago, after 2 years of publishing the EAST COBBER, I set out to create another way to spotlight all the good people in East Cobb. I wanted to create a community event similar to the ones I grew up with. Sure, this event has goals stated in a businesslike manner: *To spotlight those people who contribute to the quality of life in East Cobb County *To provide opportunities for various groups of the community to interact *To bolster the image of East Cobb to external audiences as well as help East Cobb residents feel good about living in East Cobb *To promote the arts by providing a showcase for local fine arts performers and groups at the Festival *To promote economic development by providing local businesses an event that demonstrates their community support and allows company personnel to interact with prospects and customers. But truthfully, I dreamed of a hometown tradition that would create special memories for children and, selfishly, I wanted to raise my future children in a community that had a special event that made them proud of living in East Cobb! Each year, as I direct each entry out of the staging area onto Johnson Ferry, I get a bit weepy watching the smiling faces of the children (and adults, too!) beaming with pride for their club, school or scout troop. What a thrill it is to hear the boom of our incredible high school marching bands! Cue music. Maybe I get teary because I had a dream –unheard of in 1995—to close down the main street in East Cobb and start a special event for East Cobbers. Who would come? What did I know about producing a parade? Who would help me turn this dream into reality? This parade has taught me so many life lessons: placing my dreams above my fears, keeping the faith, inspired by people who come into my path to help make this parade a success, and more, so many more, lessons that have encouraged and enriched me. The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all, the world needs dreamers who do. My dream has been this publication and the parade. What’s your dream? I hope you discover the happiness of striving for and reaching your dreams. Feel free to share your dreams with me by e-mailing: cynthia@eastcobber.com. I’d love to hear from you! All the best,
Cynthia M. Rozzo FOuNDER/PuBLISHER

PARADE & FESTiVAl
September 12: A Day for East Cobbers To Celebrate
The 14th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 12. The day’s festivities will be kicked off by the EAST COBBER Parade at 10 a.m. The annual parade aims to build a sense of community and reinforce East Cobb County’s status as one of the best places to live in the metro Atlanta area. Floats, high school marching bands and a cornucopia of East Cobb groups will march down the onemile parade route. Kicking off at 10 a.m., the parade participants will march from Mount Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot, travel south on Johnson Ferry Road, and then turn into the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center. Immediately following the EAST COBBER Parade, at approximately 11a.m., the EAST COBBER Festival will be held in the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center (736 Johnson Ferry Road) parking lot. The Festival offers East Cobb County residents an opportunity to come together and enjoy an afternoon of local entertainment, carnival games and good food. Booths will be set up to showcase everything from jewelry to local schools to books. East Cobb kids will have plenty to do at the EAST COBBER Festival from getting their face painted to taking a chance at a carnival game to hopping in a moonwalk. Festival goers will also be treated to food from East Cobb restaurants and civic clubs. Many thanks to this year’s sponsors: Equitable Management Corporation/ Fountains of Olde Towne, WellStar, Harry Norman Realtors and the EAST COBBER. Thanks to their generosity this special event has become a popular pastime for East Cobb residents. Come be a part of this very special, old-fashioned celebration--the 14th annual EAST COBBER Parade and Festival. Good food, vendors and entertainment make it a great event for the whole family. If you are interested in marching in the parade, renting a booth or performing on the Festival stage, call the EAST COBBER at 770-640-7070 or visit www. eastcobber.com.

H1n1 Flu update
In response to concerns expressed by EAST COBBER readers, information on the H1N1 Flu is presented below. This information is reprinted from the Cobb County Schools website: www.cobbk12.org. It is likely that you have read and heard a lot lately about the H1N1 flu and the role schools will play this fall as the virus impacts our community. While H1N1 remains a health concern, public health officials in Georgia and across the nation have downgraded the initial alarm about the virus. In Georgia healthcare providers are no longer testing every case specifically for this strain of influenza. With the school year under way and students again in close proximity, already we are seeing students with flu-like symptoms in our school. This is common at most schools in our district and throughout the metro area. H1N1 is very similar to other strains of flu, and it can be treated. Because healthcare providers are not always testing for H1N1, we will not know every case of H1N1 flu that occurs. But it should be assumed that H1N1 is currently in our community, including schools. We will treat H1N1 cases as we would any other cases of flu, which means we do not plan to send out individual letters with every confirmed case. I want to remind you that if your child begins to show flu-like symptoms, it is important that you keep your child home and not allow him or her to return to school until at least 24 hours have passed without fever. Below is more information about H1N1 and how you can help prevent the spread of flu. What is H1n1 flu? H1N1 flu (Swine Flu) is a respiratory illness that is caused by a Type A influenza virus. H1N1 is a new strain of flu that is a mix of swine, human and bird viruses. You cannot get H1N1 flu from eating pork or pork products. What are the signs and symptoms of H1n1 flu? The signs and symptoms of H1N1 flu are similar to regular flu. Symptoms appear quickly, likely including dry cough, fever (sometimes over 102 degrees), stuffy nose, chills, extreme tiredness and body aches. Some people have reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea with H1N1 flu. What should i do if my child has signs or symptoms of the flu? If your child gets a fever or flu-like symptoms, it is important that he/she stays home, rests and drinks plenty of fluids. Please do not give children fever-reducing medication and send them to school. The medication wears off and fevers and aches return. Never give aspirin to children or teens who have fever and/or flu-like symptoms because this can cause a rare, serious illness called Reye syndrome. Thorough hand washing with soap and water is the best prevention, in addition to the flu vaccine. What are Cobb County Schools doing to prevent the spread of influenza? The District is encouraging staff and students to practice good hygiene, including proper hand washing techniques. We encourage students to use hand sanitizer with 60 percent alcohol content in situations where hand washing facilities are not immediately available. The CDC also provides information on how to get immunization against influenza and H1N1 flu. How can you help prevent the spread of the disease? • Staying home from school or work if ill. Students and staff will remain at home until fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. • Avoiding close contact with those who are ill. • Hand Hygiene – washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizers often. • Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing. • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. • Practicing good health habits, i.e., getting plenty of sleep, physical activity, fluids, nutritious eating and managing stress. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has compiled the most up-to-date and accurate information about H1N1 Flu on a Web site: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. There is a link to the CDC information on the home page of your child’s school Web site. The Cobb County School District works closely with Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPD), a division of the state public health department. CDPH has also posted information about H1N1 flu on its web site at: http://cobbanddouglaspublichealth. org/News/swineflu.php. We are following CDPH’s guidance as the progression of this flu changes frequently. Additionally, our custodial staff and teachers are cleaning classrooms and classroom furniture with an antiviral and antibacterial solution. We will continue this practice in our school building. The Cobb County School District will continue to make families aware of the impact of influenza on our school environments. Awareness and prevention are the best means of helping our community stay healthy.

We’re a family of black belts…thanks to Master Young Shim.
“I looked for years for just the right Martial Arts school for my children. Each of my children needed this training for different reasons – building confidence, focus or self-control. I knew after training with Master Shim for a few weeks that his school was the right one for my family, and I saw changes in each of my children very quickly. My oldest child gained self-confidence and selfcontrol, my middle child went from a shy introvert to an outgoing kid who now teaches Shim’s program to other students every week. My youngest lacked focus and is now thriving in school. My three children and I are all now black belts. I believed in Shim so much that I’m also the Assistant Director at Shim’s Tae Kwon Do Academy. If you want to do something great for your family, sign up your kids today at Shim’s. I’m glad I did.” — Dinah Absi, Assistant Director

Sprayberry Grad a Top ultimate Frisbee Talent
By Lucas Bigham
ultimate Frisbee, better known as “ultimate” for short, has grown increasingly popular in the united States in the past decade, especially with high school and college students. ultimate was created over 30 years ago and is played on a flat surface field much like football or soccer. The object of the game is to score by catching a frisbee in your opponent’s end zone. Once a player catchs lindsay Foglia es a frisbee, they can no longer run but still pivot. Their role is to pass the frisbee to one of their teammates in hopes of eventually making it to the end zone. It’s the goal of the defending team to prevent the offense from catching the frisbee or by intercepting it. “The rules are very simple and are similar to rules for games that are familiar to most people, like football and soccer,” said Curtis Volin, organizer for the Marietta ultimate Frisbee Meetup. His group consists of over 150 members and usually meets at least once a week at Terrell Mill Park in Marietta. Most universities have formed clubs for students dedicated to playing the sport competitively. These clubs travel to various tournaments nationwide much like any other varsity college program. university of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, and many other schools within Georgia all have ultimate clubs. Lindsay Foglia began playing ultimate for fun while attending Sprayberry High School. However, her true passion for the sport did not begin until her roommate in college got her interested in competing. “I always played sports, but was not great at them,” Foglia said. “I am ten times better since I started [ultimate].” She believes that part of her success in the sport can be attributed to listening to the guidance she was given by more experienced players. Players of all different skill levels are always looking to help each other, she explains. Foglia plays on the women’s ultimate team at the university of Georgia. uGA is ranked in the top 50 of the ultimate Players Association (uPA) college women’s division that hosts hundreds of clubs in the u.S. The uPA was founded in 1979 and serves as the governing body for ultimate in the u.S. with over 27,000 members. When she is not competing for her college, Foglia plays for a co-ed league in the Atlanta Flying Disc Club. This club sponsors many leagues a year that take place at different fields throughout metro Atlanta. These leagues include players of all different skill levels competing year-round.

East Cobb resident, Mike Snowden, is giving new meaning to the “smokin’ guitar” by making instruments out of discarded cigar boxes, and his creations are selling very well on the internet. Rather than make a guitar out of wood, Mike uses empty cigar boxes to form the body of the guitar and then attaches a neck and strings. The craft of creating cigar box guitars revives a century-old tradition born out of poverty, though modern-day maker Mike Snowden can command top dollars for his product. His guitars sell for $225 on up. “Vintage guitars are really in now,” Snowden said. “People have been making them since Civil War times.” The instrument became popular during the Great Depression with early blues and jug bands because they were inexpensive to build and maintain. Rock legend Jimmy Hendrix learned how to play on a cigar box guitar, Snowden said. Snowden, 39, has been playing music for over 20 years. He was the former bass guitar player for the rock group Band de Soleil that opened for the Indigo Girls, Joe Cocker, Dave Matthews Band, and many others. His hobby began in 2007 after watching a video on the internet of a guy playing a guitar made out of a cigar box. Having never built a guitar before, he challenged himself to build one. After successfully building a cigar box guitar, he started selling them on the internet. Along with selling his guitars online, he also sells his cigar box guitars at local festivals. He has booths reserved at The Roswell Arts Festival on September 19 & 20 and Chomp and Stomp in Cabbagetown, Ga. during November. He recently released a CD titled “Summer in the Fields” that features him playing his own cigar box guitars he hand made. The music is a mixture of deep delta slide blues and up-tempo rocking riffs. He also plans on eventually recording a follow-up album. If you would like to learn more about the cigar box guitars that Mike makes, visit his website at www.snowdenguitars.com or listen to his unique music at www.myspace.com/snowdenguitars.

Hacker’s Corner
By George Harris
After a few years of fighting with the trees, the lakes and every other trouble possible in a golf course, I decided to admit that I needed help. My doctor of choice is Glen, a pro that I met accidentally when I was looking for a new set of clubs. In the past when the game was failing me, a new club was the solution. Sooner or later you realize that it is not the clubs but the lousy swing you have developed over the years. So with a couple of lessons under my belt, a couple of adjustments here and there, a couple of trips to the driving range, I can actually see some changes in my game. Everybody always tells you that golf is a game of inches, and in my first few lessons I have definitely been able to see that. A slight twist to the right or the left in my grip, a couple of inches closer to the ball, a few inches higher at address and I have my first birdie at Indian Hills. Not a foot wedge, mulligan or gimmie, but an honest-to-god birdie. If you are standing in the sidelines, wondering whether you should be spending the four-five hours it takes to finish a round, to post a 110 on the scorecard, be patient. Everybody’s swing is fixable. If I can hit the ball straight, then there is hope for everyone out there. Standing back and watching yourself on video, or understanding again the basics of the swing can be very informative. Grab a video camera, buy a DVD, read a book, take a lesson and who knows, you might actually learn something helpful.

The Eat-in Represents a “Day of Action” to Get ‘Real Food’ in Schools
On Monday, September 7, 2009 (Labor Day), people in communities all over the country will participate in EatIns in their respective communities. An Eat-In is a potluck that takes place in public, and gathers people to support a cause; in this case: getting “real food” into schools. In Cobb County, GA, on that day, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, Cobb County residents will participate in the Cobb County Slow Food “Time for Lunch” Eat-in, at the Gallery at Paper Mill Village (at the corner of Johnson Ferry Road and Paper Mill Road). This National Eat-In is intended to send a clear message to Congress: It’s time to provide America’s children with real food at school. The “Time for Lunch” Campaign is a project of Slow Food uSA (http://slowfoodusa.org/) , an educational non-profit company, with the goal of creating a world in which everyone can enjoy food that is good, clean and fair. MuST Ministries, a faith-based organization that serves people in need in Cobb and Cherokee counties, is in need of food to replenish its food pantries. Our shelves are nearly empty and the people keep coming and lining up for hours before we open our doors,” said Annette Lee, resource development coordinator for MuST Ministries. MuST needs for the community to donate non-perishable food items immediately and take to the Donation Center at 1210-B Kennestone Circle in Marietta or directly to the Canton or Smyrna locations. For more information on how to volunteer or make a monetary donation to the program, call MuST Ministries at 770-427-9862 or visit the MuST Ministries website at www. mustministries.org . Public Safety update
By Lt. Chenoweth Cobb County Police Department, Precinct 4 I know there has been a lot of discussion lately about Entering Auto incidents. We have reported to you that we have suffered a number of incidents in our county parks and community pool parking lots. We have learned that most of these incidents have NOT been perpetrated by locals. We are currently involved in a joint investigas lt. Chenoweth tive effort with other local police agencies as well as state and federal law enforcement agencies through which we have learned that these incidents are being perpetrated by an enterprise of organized criminals from south Florida. Here is what is occurring. On June 7, 2009 three individuals were arrested near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida following an investigative traffic stop by local authorities. The investigating officer discovered several bags within the vehicle containing multiple women’s identification cards (driver’s licenses) from various states. A subsequent interview by investigators yielded an admission from one of the involved parties in which he described the overall criminal operation. Essentially, the three individuals involved are simply a cog in a much larger criminal machine based out of south Florida dedicated to the art of financial transaction fraud. According to the arrestee, a team is developed for the purpose of accomplishing a “road trip”. In this particular incident, ten individuals left Florida occupying three rental vehicles. This group then traveled through Florida and Georgia perpetrating a series of entering autos. The group targeted areas where unsuspecting citizens gathered in large groups (tennis centers, recreation parks, and swim events). The goal of the entering autos was to acquire checkbooks, driver’s licenses, social security cards, and credit cards which belonged to females. Once obtaining these items, the group would utilize “cashers”, female co-perpetrators, to carry out the fraudulent transactions at various local banks. The above described criminal enterprise is being investigated at every level (local, state, and federal) and additional arrests are expected. It is our hope that by making you, our citizens, aware of this criminal network that you will be vigilant in the manner in which you chose to secure your personal property within your vehicles. We suggest that you, and your family, plan ahead when attending an event at a local park (baseball games, swim meets, tennis matches, etc.). For females especially, please do not leave your wallets within your vehicle. If you must take your purse with you, we suggest placing the purse in your trunk before leaving your residence. If you happen to own an SuV, you might want to consider carrying only your driver’s license and whatever cash or credit cards you may need on your person. Whatever you do, please do not leave your purse within plain view (passenger seat or floorboard). We realize that this may cause an added inconvenience to you but taking this extra step may prevent you and your family from experiencing the certain inconvenience that comes from having your car broken into (Insurance claims, Glass Doctors) and your personal information comprised (identify theft, financial transaction fraud). Be safe out there. Remember to visit the Cobb County Police Department’s website at p4.police.cobbcountyga.gov for the PENS Dispatch, daily crime reports, crime stats, crime prevention questions and answers.

Drill Down for Safety on 9/11
This September will mark the eighth anniversary of 9/11. Since then, as we’ve tried to heal as a nation, we’ve also looked for ways to channel our emotions and memories into endeavors that will help protect our families and friends from other such tragedies. One way to channel our emotions has been to focus more attention on emergency preparedness. First responders – medical technicians, police and fire – have instituted new plans and processes for addressing emergency situations. Government agencies have stepped up security and safety measures. And dozens of organizations and businesses have developed programs for keeping their employees safe. But one East Cobb organization has taken the idea of responding to emergencies a step further. The Safe America Foundation, headquartered in Marietta, has organized a nationwide effort this fall to encourage all Americans to practice safety and communications drills on 9/11. 9/11 Drill Down for Safety focuses on getting families to sit down and conduct emergency communication drills and rehearse what they would do and how they would react in the event of a national disaster. The campaign, beginning on 9/11, will continue through October. Former u.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman J. Mineta is honorary chair for 9/11 Drill Down for Safety. With Secretary Mineta’s support, and the leadership of Safe America President Len Pagano, 9/11 Drill Down for Safety has recruited dozens of corporations nationwide that will conduct on-site emergency communications drills on 9/11, and provide their employees with information to plan at home with their families how they would respond in an emergency. “Much has been written about how to stockpile food and water during a crisis, but we want Americans to think about how they’d communicate if phone lines were down or networks go offline. How they’d get in touch with loved ones is a critical issue,” said Pagano. As part of the drill, Pagano and Safe America are encouraging families to think about non-traditional communication methods, such as texting messaging, Twitter and Facebook. To this end, Safe America is offering “texting” lessons through its Website, www.safeamericaprepared.org, and encouraging families to pre-load emergency uRLs and messages into their mobile devices. Safe America offers the following tips for conducting an emergency “texting” drill: 1. Input the text messages for HELP and SAFE, which families can find at www.safeamerica.org. 2. Practice returning messages from each family member and memorize emergency family meeting places. 3. Text a follow-up message. Set a “time” when all should arrive. Explain what should be done if someone has trouble in traveling to the home or alternate rendezvous site. 4. Complete the drill by having all family members text that they are “SAFE” to return to their routine and review the process later at home, exploring the lessons learned. Pagano expects to have hundreds of thousands of people participate in this year’s program. Groups such as the International Association of Emergency Managers, the National Emergency Managers Association, the National Association of Government Communicators, the National Association of EMTs, the u.S. Medical Reserve Corps and the u. S. Chamber have also partnered in the effort. For more information about conducting an emergency communication drill, and to sign-up online to pledge to drill, please visit the www.safeamericaprepared.org website.

Conserving Water needs To Continue
By Glenn Page, General Manager of the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority
The recent rains that have drenched much of metro Atlanta are a welcomed relief to the months of arid conditions that have left our region in a state of drought for the past several years. However, the need to conserve water remains of the upmost importance in our obligation as citizens to ensure a sustainable water supply for generations to come. While many citizens adopted a conservation-friendly lifestyle long ago, s Glenn Page many people are new to saving water and started conservation habits only in response to extreme conditions and imposed water use restrictions. For these new conservationists, it may be easy to return to old habits when the rains return and our lakes appear to be full. But, we must voluntarily adopt a pro-conservation approach to our consumption for the health of our families, our economic future and our environment. Factors like daily precipitation and lake levels can be misleading regarding the state of our water resources. We must consider the bigger picture of annual rain falls, the number of people and industries expected to utilize our local water resources over time, how long the water supply will last without being replenished and how much water is needed to maintain ecosystems in the area. It is important to understand the value of water quality and what is required to ensure we have water that is safe for drinking and adequate for fire protection. Water has to be re-treated to stringent standards each time it goes down the drain or runs off of our yards into storm sewers. Ensuring that the water that comes from our faucets is clean and safe requires the resources of trained and experienced professionals and state of the art facilities that are continually challenged to find more efficient and effective ways to process our community’s water supply. Water treatment plants must be built large enough to meet the highest daily (peak) use; by “shaving the peak” through conservation, enormous amounts of money can be saved from a community’s infrastructure investment needs. Water conservation is prudent from both an economic and an environmental perspective. Through carefully considering our water use, we reduce our water bills and improve the quantity and quality of our water supply. Water is a finite resource that is vital to our health and our community’s ability to flourish. By applying conservation principles each day, we will be able to prolong and protect our supply of water for the future. Residents of all ages can practice simple water conservation tips in their daily lives that can help to save water, time and money. waterSmart, a water conservation education program founded by the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority in 2000, has tips and resources to help people save water both inside and outside the home, including: • Take shorter showers instead of baths to use less water. Reducing your shower time by just one minute can save two to six gallons of water. • Always turn off the water while brushing your teeth and washing your hands. • Test for a leaking toilet by adding food coloring to the tank. If color appears in the bowl after 30 minutes, your toilet is leaking. A leaking toilet can waste 200 gallons per day. • Choose plants that are native to your area, are drought resistant and thrive in your local environment. *Note native plants will not always be the most drought resistant. • Proper mulch is the key to preventing water loss from your soil, reducing the need for supplemental irrigation and completing the overall attractiveness of your landscape. • Place rain barrels under downspouts to collect water that can be used to hydrate your landscape without turning on a faucet. • When watering your landscape, use methods of irrigation that minimize loss to evaporation, such as drip irrigation or soaker hoses. Also, water only at night or in the early morning hours from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. to maximize effectiveness and prevent water loss from evaporation in the heat of the day. Water is one of our most vital natural resources and a lifesource to all living things, and its conservation is an issue that affects individuals and communities here in Georgia and throughout our region. While lake levels will rise and fall over time, the need for conserving water at home remains imperative to the sustainable future of our water supply for generations to come. The Cobb County – Marietta Water Authority is the second largest provider of drinking water in Georgia. For more information, visit www.ccmwa.org.

Pensacola Beach’s Portofino island is a Great Gulf Coast Getaway
Like many East Cobb residents, I enjoy visiting the Florida Panhandle’s popular hotspots like Rosemary Beach, Seaside and Destin. Recently, in pursuit of trying someplace different, I chose to visit another Panhandle destination: Pensacola Beach. Located on Santa Rosa Island, one of the longest barrier islands in the world, Pensacola Beach has an old Florida feel with natural beaches, local hang outs, first-rate fishing and historic Fort Pickens. Just last year, Pensacola Beach was named among the nation’s top 10 beaches by TripAdvisor. My vacation plans were simple: for my family to spend a week relaxing on a new beach with occasional forays out to visit the local attractions. My temporary home base was a condo at a resort called “Portofini Island.” Located on a pristine stretch of nature-preserved land bordering both the Gulf of Mexico and the tranquil waters of Pensacola Bay, Portofino exuded luxury (okay, so I am not an RV/campground type of gal.) We stayed in one of the five high-rise towers. Each building features their own lobby, pool and hot tub. Elegant columns, domed entryway, arched ceilings and Roman whirlpool baths give the resort a distinct Mediterranean feel. Portofino Island resort has the amenities of resort living and all the comforts of home. Our very spacious 2-bedroom condo had granite countertops, washer & dryer, and full-length windows that allowed us to enjoy an incredible view of the Gulf Islands National Seashore-an undeveloped stretch of beach because it is a national park. There are lighted tennis courts, all manner of water sports for exploring both shorelines, bicycle rentals, and scenic nature trails which wind their way out to breathtaking beaches. My kids and I had many activities to choose from at Portofino: a yoga class, a dolphin cruise, bike rentals, massage, cardio tennis and a water park—to name a few. The resort even offered a free water taxi ride to the Portofino Boardwalk—a fun way to start a day of shopping. On a stormy day, my kids headed for the very large indoor pool. Be sure to visit the Pensacola Beach Pier - one of the longest in the Gulf of Mexico at 1,471 feet. Portofino Boardwalk features open-air bars and restaurants, shops, piers and shallow water for kids along Santa Rosa Sound. Summer visitors are entertained with free concerts four nights a week
For premier museums and historical sites, take an afternoon drive and visit the historic city of Pensacola. 2009 has been an exciting year since the city is celebrating its 450th anniversary. Settled by Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna in 1559, Pensacola was one of the first major settlements in North America. My family unleashed our respective inner Top Gun at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. The world’s largest naval aviation museum sports 150 restored military aircraft. Free options include guided museum tours, outdoor trolley tours and the chance to get your hands on the controls (via the cockpit trainers) of an F-14 Tomcat, A-6 Intruder and more. Plus, the Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron rehearses most Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Our Portofino condo-in-the-sky afforded us a great view of these exciting rehearsals. Palm trees. Warm sea breezes. Miles and miles of sandy beaches. If you’ve been craving a trip to the beach you’ll find it on Pensacola Beach’s Portofino Island resort. You can while away the hours lying on the beach or indulge your more adventuresome side at remarkably affordable prices. All you have to decide is what to do first.

Red Cross Calls for Blood Donors
The American Red Cross urges individuals to donate blood as soon as possible. The current blood supply has dropped critically low throughout the Southeast. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors. In the summer, blood shortages often occur because individual donations decrease, along with the number of organizations that are able to sponsor blood drives. Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weight at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors with type O (positive and negative), B negative and A negative blood should consider an automated red cell donation, a process in which only red cells are donated. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) or visit redcrossblood.org. Additionally, the Red Cross has a Cobb Donor Center located at 2145 Roswell Road, Suite 250, Marietta 30062. Call 770-578-1977 to set up an appointment to donate.
The Coach’s Corner
Did You Lose Your Business, Your Job, Your Bonuses, or Part of Your Savings & Retirement?
No doubt you have been affected by the economic meltdown. The question is: What can YOu do about it? The answer to each situation is going to be as personal to you as your finger print. You alone are capable of finding the best way to handle it so you can live a creative, happier and fuller life. s Pete Allen The biggest and most valuable asset you have can’t be depreciated by any outside circumstance, only by you. That asset is your ATTITuDE - comprised of your thoughts and your thinking. The better your attitude is, the better your creative solutions, happiness and quality of life you will have. Your overall mission is to protect your attitude. Be aware of what goes on in your mind - what thoughts go in and what thoughts coming out. When life drops a bomb on you, you’re going to react: you’ll get mad, angry, complain, get upset, depressed, etc. This is ok, it’s natural. However you don’t want to create hurtful repercussion to yourself and others. Now is the time when you want to do damage control. Let the emotions run, but the shorter time the better. Get back to your center… a place of peace in the mist of the chaos. First of all, get rid of the idea that you are a victim of all of this. Start by controlling your thinking so that your powerful, positive, creative juices start to flow – “The Sweet Spot”. YOuR AWARENESS is your major control tool. Be aware of what goes into your mind and the kind of self talk and thoughts you are having. The more aware you are of these, the quicker you will get to the sweet spot Being ready and open to the changes that will be happening, this is the hardest part. Know that most changes take us out of our comfort zone. To sum it up: it’s about controlling your environment. What you read, watch on TV, people you talk with and your self talk. This all effects how creative you are in finding your best solution. Get rid of your ‘stinkin thinkin’ and think thoughts that support you. There will be a lot of success stories on how people’s lives have changed, for the better, through all of this. I hope you intend to be one of them! For more information contact Pete at peteaca@bellsouth. net or 770-977-2232 with any question or comment. First two responders will receive a free ½ hr coaching session. Purpose, Passion, Prosperity Pete

Pink Eye or Swimmerʼs Eye?
Did you know that “pink eye” is not always contagious? Itʼs true. “Pink Eye” is really just a term used to describe any redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva. Thatʼs the transparent covering at the front of your eyeball. Pink eye or “conjunctivitis,” has one of three causes: an infection, an allergy, or a chemical reaction. Infections are usually caused by bacteria, but can be caused by a virus. The bacterial kind is very contagious. You should be careful to wash your hands frequently and not share your antibiotic eye drops, washcloths or towels with anyone. Viral infections normally are taken care of by your bodyʼs own defenses. If your eyes are red from allergies or chemicals, itʼs best to try to remove the source of the irritation. That may mean anything from using artificial tear and prescription eye drops to wearing goggles when swimming in chlorinated water. Do the right thing and see your eye care provider if you suspect a problem.

The Carpenter Open Golf Tournament sponsored by Holy Family Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus Council #9792 has been a longstanding resource for Marietta-based charities benefitting from net proceeds annually disbursed to worthy community causes. This year’s Carpenter Golf outing was played on Monday, June 1, at Indian Hills Country Club in East Cobb. 105 golfers participated. Despite this year’s lagging economy, this year’s tournament was still able to net over $10,500 for Cobb County. Jim Gust and Phil Pennartz - the only two chairmen of this event - are shown above with the winner’s trophy. The 18th Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction for the East Cobb Civitan Club and benefiting the Friends of the East Cobb Park will be held on Wednesday, October 21st at the Indian Hills Country Club. Each year over 100 items are offered in the silent auction, as well as the live auction items and raffles. Last year’s event was so successful that this year’s date is being moved forward into October to better provide for additional accommodations at the Indian Hills Country Club. This auction is the largest fundraiser for these two organizations, typically grossing over $20,000 per event. To date, the East Cobb Civitans have donated over $85,000 to the East Cobb Park through these efforts. Additional donations have supported the Salvation Army, the Center for Family Resources, MuST Ministries, The Center for Children & Young Adults, Camp Big Heart (a 2-week camp for the developmentally disabled), The Buck Craft Scholarship at KSu and the Civitan International Research Center at uAB. Tickets are available for $20. You must be at least 21 years old to attend. If you are interested in being a donor or a sponsor for this event, or for tickets, please contact Roselle Wilkinson at RoselleW@bellsouth.net or 678-548-9635.
