No entry to water until safety arrangements in place
Wetsuits compulsory
Brightly coloured swim hats
Min. swim in pairs / groups based on speed and ability
Swim a defined course – using landmarks where buoys etc are not available
Swim parallel to the bank / shore
Provide safety cover / spotter on bank esp. if no boat / canoe support
Operate registration system for all swimmers including emergency contact details,
any medical issues
Hold a pre-swim briefing session – clear guidance on session, group structure,
course to be swum, guidance on what to do in case of getting into difficulty (roll
on back, raise arm in air)
No entry into water space used by e.g. boats / jet skis / water skis / windsurfers /
surfers etc – communication with other users
Emergency Action Plan
First Aid kit availability
Appoint a safety officer who is responsible for liaising with venue operator /
owner to ascertain water quality issues. On day of swim safety officer has final
decision on whether session can proceed
Identify a leader for each session
Swimmer
Min. age 14 (as at 31st December in the current year)
Must provide contact details
Must be aware of all safety and conduct procedures
Swim within own ability and where swimming in pairs NOT leave their partner’s
side
