Archbishop Oscar Romero ~ Points for teachers
• The video clip includes some original film footage from 1977 - 80.
• Romero's appointment as Archbishop was seen as a 'safe' appointment, of
someone who would maintain the status quo. It was known that he was not
particularly sympathetic to the ‘base communities’ which being formed at the time.
Base communities were groups of Christians who met together for prayer, and to
plan to work for justice for the poor.
• The events which so significantly changed his views at the age of 59 that he was
prepared take substantial risks and even die, bear close exploration.
• The reporters voice in the video clip is increasingly impressed by Romero's
stance as the story unfolds. This could be usefully explored with pupils, and be a
useful narrative device for classroom activities involving role-play.
