     Technical Notes
     Definition:
Life expectancy at birth, both sexes is the average number of years that a newborn baby is expected to live if the age-specific mortality rates effective at the year of birth apply throughout his or her lifetime. The projections reported here assume medium fertility (the "medium-fertility assumption" of the United Nations Population Division).

Years Covered and Frequency of Update:
This dataset contains estimates for all years for all countries from 1950 to 2005. For 2006 to 2050, all data are forecasts based on assumptions enumerated below. The United Nations Population Division (UNPD) updates this information every two years; the most recent data are from the 2006 Revision.

     Methodology:
     Estimates 1950-2005
All demographic indicators incorporate the most recent information regarding population dynamics and are calculated based on the three major components of population growth: (1) fertility, (2) mortality, and (3) international migration. The UNPD compiles and evaluates census and survey results from all countries, adjusting the data when necessary. Adjustments incorporate data from civil registrations (in developed countries), population surveys (in developing countries), earlier censuses, and, when necessary, population models based on information from socioeconomically similar countries. Because the figures have been adjusted, they are not strictly comparable to the official statistics compiled by the U.N. Statistical Office and published in the Demographic Yearbook.

After the figures for population size and age/sex composition have been adjusted, these data are scaled to the year 2005.

     Projections 2006-2050
All projections are based on estimates of the 2005 base-year population. Assumptions about future fertility, mortality, and migration rates are made on a country-by-country basis and, when possible, are based on historical trends.

     Fertility
Births are projected by applying age-specific fertility rates to the projected female population. In the 2006 Revision, the UNPD uses models based on past trends in fertility to project future declines. Under the medium-fertility variant, the total fertility of high-fertility and medium-fertility countries is not allowed to drop below 1.85 children per woman before 2050. However, it is not necessary for all countries to reach the floor value by 2050. Total fertility in low-fertility countries is generally assumed to remain below 2.1 children per woman during most of the projection period and to converge to 1.85 children per woman by 2045-2050. For low-fertility countries whose total fertility in 2000-2005 is estimated to be below 1.85 children per woman, projected total fertility often declines further before increasing slowly at a rate of 0.05 children per woman per quinquennium. Thus, countries whose fertility is currently very low need not reach a level of 1.85 children per woman by 2050. For a more comple

     Mortality
Deaths are projected on the basis of selected models of recent trends in life expectancy produced by the UNPD. A medium pace of mortality decline is generally used to project future mortality levels. For the 62 countries identified as significantly affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, mortality rates are predicted using a model developed by the UNAIDS Reference Group on Estimates, Modeling and Projections. The 2006 Revision also incoporates estimates of longer survival for persons with HIV/AIDS receiving active antiretroviral therapy (ART).

     Migration
Future migration rates are estimated on the basis of past international migration estimates and an assessment of the policy stance of countries with regard to future international migration flows. The UNPD incorporates information on official immigration and emigration, labor migration, undocumented migration, and refugee stocks (available from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees).

     Data Reliability:
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division estimates demographic parameters on a country-by-country basis, so data reliability varies among countries.

Whenever possible, models are based on censuses. This is true in the case of most developed countries and in some developing countries. However, for developing countries estimates concerning population trends are often derived from surveys, especially when countries lack a civil registration system or have one that does not achieve full coverage of all vital events. Also, for developing countries the availability of detailed information on fertility and mortality is limited and the data on international migration flows are generally inadequate.

Although estimates are based on incomplete data and projections cannot factor in unforeseen events (e.g., famine, wars), U.N. demographic models are widely accepted and use well-understood qualities, which make these data fairly reliable.
