Call for Conference - Request for Information to Manufacturers of Technology
Associated with Producing Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPAT) for Use in
U. S. State, Local, and Federal Elections
NIST is researching information that would be helpful in producing interim requirements
for voting systems containing a voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT). These voting
systems typically would produce a printed copy of a voter's ballot as made on a touch
screen voting system, and then permit the voter to verify this ballot before opting to
electronically casting the ballot at the touch screen device. The printed copy would be
retained and used as an audit record.
In drafting requirements associated with VVPAT, NIST would find it helpful to receive
information from manufacturers of voting-related equipment that currently implement or
are considering implementing a VVPAT system. These manufacturers may include
voting system manufacturers as well as printing device manufacturers or third-party
integrators of voting system equipment. In addition, NIST would be interested in
receiving information from U.S. states and other jurisdictions who have experience in
running elections using VVPAT systems or who otherwise have information they wish to
share with NIST.
The types of information NIST is seeking include the following:
how voting systems manufacturers are currently implementing or planning to
implement VVPAT systems
information concerning printing devices suitable for use with VVPAT systems
usability and accessibility issues related to VVPAT systems
experiences with VVPAT systems, including discussion of features or systems
that work well or that have been problematic
any special requirements useful for VVPAT systems
