Reading & Math Proficiency
“AYP” Adequate Yearly Progress
The following “starting points” for reading and mathematics were implemented in the
2001-2002 school year for grades 3, 5, 8 and High School. The starting points for grades 4, 6
and 7 were implemented in the 2005-2006 school year. Each of the starting points represents the
percent proficient for that particular grade level and subject (meet or exceed based on AIMS).
For example, in grade 7 during the 2000-2001 school year, 48 percent of students would have to
be proficient in Mathematics in order to make AYP (adequate yearly progress).

Reading and Math Benchmarks
The subsequent tables and graphs represent the intermediate goals and annual measurable
objectives needed to continue to make AYP. Notice that there are plateaus in proficiency from
the 2001-2002 school year until the 2009-2010 school year. After that year, the annual
measurable goals increase each year until 100% proficiency is reached in 2013-2014.
There are 6 intermediate goals for grade levels 3, 5, 8 and High School, but only 5
intermediate goals for 4, 6, and 7 since the later grades were not implemented until the 2005-
2006 school year. The percent proficiency is based on what percent of students met or exceeded
(M/E) the subject area based on AIMS test data for that school year.
