• Hispanics or Latinos suffer disproportionately
  from:
  – Diabetes, asthma, infant mortality and certain cancers,
    and others
• Historical distrust of scientific community
• Poor access to primary medical care
• Cultural: language barriers, lack of knowledge,
  locus of control
• Investigator: perceived costs, access to patients

Clinical Diversity Leadership
• Focus was on increasing the enrollment of
  Latinos/Hispanics in clinical trials
• Lilly formed a Latino Advisory Board (2009),
  which met for the first time prior to NHMA
  last year in New York City.
  – Develop enrollment “toolkit” for investigators
  – Select sites where patients are already treated
  – Embed enrollment/outreach into clinical plans
