THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
OF SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
Annual Report
2002/03
Report from the President
It truly has been a great year, and we have a lot to celebrate. Informed by an excellent strategic planning process in September and October, our Board of Directors has worked steadily toward accomplishing our goals of fostering alumni connection, participation and support for Simon Fraser University. We have honoured the recipients of alumni scholarships and bursaries at our annual Salute to Students event. Our 20th anniversary celebration of the Outstanding Alumni Awards was a fabulous success, with nearly 300 alumni and friends in attendance. We have continued to work with the university in pursuit of our vision of an Alumni Centre on campus, and continue to develop new programs and services for our alumni. We have had the good fortune to financially support events and initiatives on campus and beyond. Unsung alumni heroes have represented all of us on university governance boards, committees and working groups. Details of these activities are provided in the following pages. We have committed substantial resources to expanding our web presence in order to communicate our accomplishments and activities to you. I urge you to visit www.sfu.ca/alumni frequently to keep in touch with the Alumni Association and your alma mater. Particularly with the university’s 40th anniversary coming up in 2005, we want you to not only know what’s being planned, but also to have input into the planning process. I would like to thank Dr. Milton Wong, Chancellor, and Dr. Michael Stevenson, President and Vice-Chancellor of SFU, for their interest in and support of alumni activities. I would also like to express my appreciation to the Board of Directors for their energy, commitment and sound decision-making, and to the staff in University Advancement for assisting the Alumni Association to reach its goals. And finally, thank you to all of our alumni who contribute in so many ways to support students, the Alumni Association and our very distinctive alma mater, Simon Fraser University.
From the Executive Director
It has been my pleasure during the past year to work with the Alumni Association Board of Directors, a dedicated group of alumni volunteers with a sincere devotion to Simon Fraser University. I am pleased to report that your 15-member elected Board approaches its work strategically, ethically and generously. The Board and the university staff share the conviction that Simon Fraser University is dynamic, innovative and worthy of an ongoing place in the hearts and minds of our alumni. It is then our responsibility as staff to complement the Board’s efforts to ensure our graduates stay connected to SFU. There have been several changes in the University Advancement staff over the past year. David Mitchell, our VP External Relations, departed for the University of Ottawa in June 2002. Warren Gill, a well-known SFU personality, assumed the role of VP, University Advancement for the year. Following an external review in Fall 2002, the university is currently conducting a search for a new VP Advancement. We are also pleased to welcome two new staff members in Alumni Relations. Anne Campbell joined us in June 2002 in the role of Alumni Affairs Officer for the Faculty of Business Administration. Taiya Bartley was hired in October to handle the online community, alumni lifetime e-mail and alumni record updates. With Anne’s arrival, this past year has seen some new developments for business alumni. There are now even more opportunities to stay connected, including social gatherings, incentive programs, contests and SFU Business signature events. The Management of Technology (MOT) MBA chapter and the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) alumni group join the roster of established alumni chapters. The following pages of this Annual Report briefly outline your alumni association’s many activities and accomplishments over the past year. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, volunteers and staff alike, for their time, energy and passion in achieving these goals. It has been a lot of fun. Alumni Communication
www.sfu.ca/alumni/news
Alumni Website Assisted by the university’s web strategist, the Alumni Association and alumni staff worked together in 2002/03 to create a more attractive, easy-to-use, relevant and up-todate website for our alumni. Judging by feedback and traffic statistics, alumni are finding it worth their while to visit the site and increasing numbers are taking the time to do so. Average daily visits to the site increased by over 100% from 38 in September ’02 to 78 in March ’03. Alumni Update eNewsletter Launched in February 2002 and published monthly 10 times per year, the circulation of our alumni eNewsletter has grown by 40% from 10,000 at its inception to over 14,000 by March ’03. It has proven to be an economical and invaluable way to communicate with alumni. Benefits to date include better awareness of alumni activities and higher attendance at alumni events. Archived issues are posted on the alumni website. Business eNewsletter Last year over 4,000 alumni and friends of the Faculty of Business Administration received the Business eNewsletter, a quarterly email highlighting events, news, programs, partnerships, and profiles of business alumni, students, staff, and faculty. aq magazine Published in May and November, the circulation of aq magazine grew in 2002/03 to over 60,000 including 57,000 alumni readers worldwide. In December the publishers undertook a readership survey which revealed a high level of satisfaction with the magazine and some great feedback on how to improve it. Lifetime Email Introduced in April 2001 to help grads keep in touch for life, the Alumni Lifetime Email program provides alumni with a free “@alumni.sfu.ca” email address which can be used as a permanent forwarding address through changes in internet service providers, employers or places of residence. The number of lifetime email address holders grew by more than 55% last year to include over 4,100 grads by March 31, 2003. On-line Community The On-line Community (OLC) was introduced in the Fall of 2000 through funding by the Alumni Association. In 2002/ 03 alumni OLC members registered and participated in a variety of services including a business card exchange, on-line directory, on-line mentoring, and travel/relocation advice. Last year there were 2,500 alumni in the OLC membership. Grad to Grad Contact Alumni records staff in University Advancement helped 140 alumni keep in touch with each other through our grad to grad contact service in 2002/03. This represents almost triple the number of requests handled in the previous year. Address Updates We thank all alumni who contacted SFU last year in person, by phone, fax, email, and website to update their personal information including changes in name, phone number, home, employment or email address. In 2002/03 over 17,000 alumni records were updated by staff, representing almost 25% of the alumni database. In five years the number of annual record updates has grown by 50%, far outpacing the 32% growth in alumni membership. SFU alumni are definitely on the move! Contests We also keep in touch through contests like business card draws at alumni events and our Spring 2003 DVD web contest sponsored by RBC Royal Bank. Alumni who participate in draws and contests provide up-to-date contact information and valuable feedback on our alumni programs.

Alumni Giving
Alumni Association Giving
For the fourth consecutive year, the Alumni Association donated $2,000 to support the Student Leadership Award. It was presented in February 2003 to Reza Pourvali, an honours student in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry working toward a prospective career as a physician.
Alumni Appeal student callers Yovanka Contreras, Bryan Wang, and Vinita Dayaldasani attended the Outstanding Alumni Awards event thanks to alumni ticket sponsors Gregg Macdonald, Karen Slessor, and R.M. Hungerford.
Reza Pourvali (centre), winner of the 2002 Student Leadership Award, celebrates with Dr.Willie Davidson, Dean of Science (left) and President Michael Stevenson (right).
The generosity of alumni donors made it a record-breaking year of fundraising. Total alumni giving in 2002/03 reached $3,993,647. The number of alumni donors increased 13% to a new high of 9,600. Over 26,000 alumni were contacted personally through the alumni appeal student calling program, the most ever. In Fall 2002 SFU improved from 5th to 4th in the Maclean’s magazine alumni support rankings thanks to growing participation in alumni giving. And 100% of the alumni board of directors participated in the annual appeal with a donation.
In March 2003 the association fulfilled a $20,000 pledge toward the Terry Fox Statue which was unveiled in September 2001 during the university’s first Terry Fox Day. A grant from the government’s direct access program enabled the association to provide $4,750 to fund a desktop publishing station for co-op education students, as well as $4,000 to fund student lockers in the library.

Good news for alumni giving means very good news for students! A total of 275 awards were provided to students last year through the Alumni Scholarship and Bursary Endowment Fund totalling over $136,250 in financial assistance. This included 134 bursaries totalling $67,000 and 141 scholarships totalling $69,250. Students also benefited from $75,000 from the Alumni Library Endowment Fund which funds books and journals that can’t be afforded as part of the Library’s regular budget. Many other students were helped by alumni who donated to funds within specific faculties, departments and programs including athletics. Thank you to all alumni donors for helping today’s students succeed, and for keeping the tradition of alumni giving alive and well at SFU.
The Alumni Association and the university are grateful for the generous support of our sponsors who provided funding, gifts-in-kind, services, and products to make last year’s alumni events a resounding success.
