CAR COMPETITION

THE SOCIETY OF PHYSICS STUDENTS CHAPTER AT UTD

November 5 at 2:00 p.m.

Galaxy Room – Student Union

Open to all UTD Undergraduates,

Graduate Students, Faculty, and Staff.

The idea of this competition is to build a car that will compete in a race and is entirely edible. The cars

will be launched down an inclined ramp, and the total distance traveled will be one of the criteria used to

score each entry into the contest (see rules for scoring below).

RULES

1. No more than 4 people per team.

2. ALL parts of the car, including wheels and axels, must be edible.

3. The cars can be started from any part of the ramp. No pushing though!

4. If the car falls apart along at any point along the ramp or track, the part the judges consider to be

the 'body' of the car will be used for scoring.

5. If the car fails to make it to the bottom of the ramp, each team will have two additional chances to

launch their car. Once a car makes it off the ramp, no additional starts will be allowed.

6. Once a car is launched, and the judges have determined the distance traveled, the team will have

3 minutes to eat their car.

7. After the race, NO part of the car can be altered by being cooked, heated, blended, or otherwise

processed prior to being eaten. Salt, pepper, and some condiments will be provided, as well as

plenty of water.

8. The car will be weighed prior to launching, and again after the 3 minute eating period.

9. Each team's scores will be determined as follows:

Score=[(distance traveled) x (percent of car's weight eaten)]/[number of team members]

10. One award will be given for the BEST PHYSICS.

11. One award will be given for ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION.

12. One award will be given for BEST WRECK.

Approximate Ramp Specifications

The ramp's surface will be made out of the smoothest linoleum we can find. The ramp will be approximately 2.5

meters long, 30 cm wide, and 30 degrees from the horizontal. Bumpers will be placed on the ramp to keep cars from

falling off the sides.

Competition Entry Forms can be found at the UTD SPS web site: http://www.utdallas.edu/orgs/sps/

Please print the Sigma Pi Sigma Edible Car Competition Entry Form, fill it out, and bring it with you the day of the

competition.

Remember, the main idea here is to be creative and have fun!
