F.D.R’s plan to get U.S. out of the

Depression

I. FDR as President



 FDR was a great president for this

time period.

 Took control, good leader

 Created programs

 Weekly Fireside Chats

 What he was doing & how

It would help the country

 “Nothing to fear but fear itself”

Early action by FDR



 Bank holiday- shut down banks so people

could settle down and banks could regroup

 Rural Electrification Act- Electricity to farms

 Three R’s of the New Deal

 Relief- Jobs, money (CCC, WPA, FERA)

 Recovery- Get cycle going (AAA, TVA)

 Reform- Changes (SEC, FDIC)

Tennessee Valley

Authority

 Brought electricity to the Tennessee

Valley for first time

 Dammed rivers to create lakes and

hydro-power

 Led to jobs

 Damming rivers

 Tourism (fishing)

 Factories (now that there is electricity)

Agricultural Adjustment

Administration

-Paid farmers to NOT farm part of their

land & kill some of their livestock

-Decreased supply which raised prices

-Allowed farmers to stay in business

-Concept still around today

National Recovery Act

(Admin)

 Put rules on businesses to encourage

growth

 Rules led to more jobs

 40 work week

 Overtime pay. What would this do?

 Created minimum wage

 Banned child labor

 Fixed prices

 Businesses had to display this poster

or face people NOT buying from them

Public Works Administration

 Put men to work building structures

that would help the country

 Bridges, Park buildings, sewers, etc

 Salaries paid by Federal Govt.

Civilian Conservation Corps

 Put men to work in national parks

improving the environment

 Salaries paid by Federal Govt.

Federal Emergency Relief

Administration

 Federal Govt. gave money to states to

help “relieve” the people.

 Gave money to:

 Soup kitchens

 Help the unemployed

 Help pass out blankets and clothes

 Employment schemes

III. New Deal Opposition



 American Liberty League- did not like

the debt U.S. was gaining

 Supreme Court cases shooting down

some of his programs

 Those who opposed:

 Huey Long-Senator

 Father Charles Coughlin

 Dr. Francis Townsend

IV. Second One Hundred Days



 Social Security

 Made people feel more secure socially

1. Elderly Income & Insurance-Medicare

2. Public Assistance-Medicaid (Insurance)

-Food Stamps, W.I.C., housing, etc.

3. Unemployment Insurance

***All this paid for by taxing everybody a

small amount.

V. FDR helps Labor



 Creates minimum wage

 This was later shot down by Supreme

Court

 He creates it again later and it sticks.

 Allowed workers to join unions

 Francis Perkins- First woman cabinet

member- Sec. of Labor

VI. Election of 1936



 Dem- FDR

 Rep- Alf Landon

 FDR still very well liked so it was a

landslide for FDR who won all but two

states

VII. Escaping the

Depression

 People used the following to help get

their minds off their troubles

 Movies

 Radio

 Sports
