Animal Rescue League
• Feral Cats
What are Feral Cats?
• A domestic animal that has reverted back to a
wild state is considered feral
• Lost or abandoned cats can survive only 2-4
years on their own
• Feral cats face death by starvation, disease,
inclement weather, traffic, and predatory
animals
Why care about Feral Cats?
• A single breeding pair of feral cats, over the
course of 7 years, can produce 420,000
offspring
• US animal shelters routinely euthanize 15
million unwanted pets a year
What to do
• Simply feeding feral cats does not solve the
problem!
• Extra food often brings in more cats to the
area
• Food left outdoors attracts other animals
• Contact the Animal Rescue League’s Feral Cat
Program
• Neuter your pets!
What we do
• Capture, neuter, and vaccinate feral cats and
return them to their territories
– Stabilizes the population at manageable levels
– Eliminates annoying mating-related behavior
– Colonies defend their territories against newcomers
– Allows cats to live out natural lives
• Teams of volunteers maintain food and shelter for
the feral cat colonies
– Dishes are picked up after every daily feeding
